Unique House Boat in Amsterdam Centre, Near the 'Magere Brug'

Bedrooms 2
Property type house boat
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House Boat, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Unique location, ideal for museums, nice restaurants, shopping and night life but also in an oasis of peace. On the roof terrace there is lots of sun and if you like water birds, you can feed them from outside the windows... A few minutes walking to the Waterloo square and flee market, the Jewish historical Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue, the Opera House, the Hermitage museum and the famous Music Hall (Carre) is around the corner.

Over a hundred years old and once a cargoship the “Johanna” was transformed in 2006 into a modern and characterful House Boat. With inside some old features left in place (such as the wheelhouse with a wonderfull view in the direction of the river ‘Amstel’, it gives you an enchanting feel of what it was like to live on the water back then.

Facilities of the Johanna (115 square meter):

There is an open (with all the equipment) kitchen to the living room and the study. One bedroom and a cupboardbed in the study with a very nice atmosphere (2 double beds). The bathroom has a bath and a shower cabin. There is a separated toilet.

Public transportation is nearby, you can hop on a bus or tram or with the underground to the Central train station in less than ten minutes. If you have a car you can reach the highway in about ten minutes also. The best way to get around, however, is by “Rent a bike”.

Keywords: House Boat, Canal, the Hermitage Museum, Carre, Amstel, Foodstores, Retaurants, Underground.

Bucket list item!!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at a lot of cool places in my life but this is at the top of the list! Is there anything more romantic than living on a house boat on a canal in Amsterdam!? The location was perfect, just a few minutes walk to the metro and the tram, and on a side canal so it was peaceful and not noisy with boat traffic. I was traveling wth my mom and as two females we felt totally safe. Communication and check in and check out was easy considering that I speak zero Dutch. The place was dated but quite spacious with all the amenities one could need. My favorite part was sitting up in the enclosed wheel house reading a book and watching the river in the evening! I highly recommend this place!!

Great Boat, Great Location, Better than any hotel.

  • 5 of 5

Had an excellent long weekend staying on this houseboat. Facilities are excellent, large relaxing living space meant you were in no rush to get out on a morning, full kitchen with more than enough equipment / tools to fulfill any requirement. Shower / toilet sound with no problems at all. Loved sitting on the deck in sun having a beer watching other boats go past. Very quiet on an evening, hardly noticed any swaying on the boat even when other boats passing. Excellent communication from owners, a flight delay caused no issues, even managed to talk a useless idiot like me into resetting the power after it had tripped. Close to metro links although we walked from central station, close to mini supermarket, easy access to all attractions but peaceful. If i was being super picky it could do with new blinds in the bedrooms to avoid being up super early and we struggled to get the coffee machine to work properly but that might have been us.

In short a great unique place to stay, in a great location, that wasn't smelly or too hot.

We Left On Our First Day

  • 1 of 5

I travel for a living, so I'm curious about the 5-star ratings.

I made a last-minute, mid-week reservation for 3 nights, a week before arrival with my 7-year-old son--we thought it would be a fun adventure. He was a little unsure about staying on a houseboat when we arrived, but the owner was indeed kind in showing us around, and my son then felt great about it. The furnishings are as shown, the sleeping cupboard was very Harry Potter, we climbed the ladder to the wheelhouse and walked along the boat to sit in the chairs outside (we had to clear off spider webs but the chairs are outside, so this is of course fine). Before we arrived, the owners emailed a map of the metro and a map of the city with the location of the boat highlighted, and asked what time our flight arrived so they could estimate what time to meet us. There was a bottle of prosecco in the refrigerator. All very promising.

But the rating is for the rental, which was so unpleasant for us, we left at 11:30 pm on the first evening.

It was a pleasantly cool Dutch evening, but when the main door/hatch is closed (which you need to do to lock it in the evening), the bedroom becomes unbearably stuffy and hot. All of the windows were open on the boat when we arrived, and we kept all of them open, but still it was still so stuffy we couldn't sleep--plus there are no screens so there were some flying bugs coming into the room. The only blankets available were two pretty heavy comforters. The heat intensified the musty smell of the boat--perhaps the smell is unavoidable, living on the water, but it was still unpleasant. The shower wall was pulling away from the floor with a sort of rusty hole.

In the middle of the night, after being unable to sleep (we had been in Europe for 2 weeks and sleeping fine), we just re-packed our stuff and went to the nearest hotel. I emailed the owners that evening letting them know. To my surprise, I received no reply at all.

As 5-star raters note, the accommodations are large,

Owner's Response: The shower wall is of course immediately repaired and indeed living on the canals in Amsterdam can give some smell when its warm/hot weather, as this summer.

Unique place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This unique place to stay in Amsterdam added to our experience. We loved it! We walked everywhere in the city, which is a great way to see and explore the city. Plan on a 20-30 minute walk for the city's highlights. We traveled with our 2 teens who thought this was special and much better than a hotel. Spacious, equipped, all you need.

Definitaely a Unique experience & House Boat. We stayed 1 week in September had great weather (1 day of light rain ). The boat was amaZing - great size, well furnished, great location. Coffee & a newspaper in the wheel house made for a great morning or restful afternoon. We had more room in the boat than in our apt in Paris. Everything in walking distance - markets, restaurants, sites, trams. The owners were very good at explaning the set up & use of all appliances. Only slightly difficult use was hatch way entry - needed a good push / lift to open - make sure you have good footing before opening ( I am 70+ yrs. old - had no problems). Already have recommended to friends; we would gladly stay again if returning to Amsterdam.

Cozy on the water

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed four rainy nights and days in Amsterdam. While the weather did not co-operate for us very well it just made our time in this lovely boat feel more homey and cozy. We could hear the rain pelting on the roof, lightning flashing through the skylights. It was wonderful! The boat was very comfortable and accommodating. The location allowed us to walk everywhere. A grocery store is less than a block away and there are many nice restaurants within walking distance. The owners were very helpful and patient as they waited for us to arrive on a late train from Paris. I would highly recommend the Johanna to friends or family. It's ideal for two couples or family of four or two to four traveling companions. We absolutely loved our stay here.
