Curtis Westphal: My Dad was a fighter pilot in Viet Nam. When he went off to war I was about 16. We stayed here with my grandparents. The beach is a wonderful place and made even more special staying at grandma's place. We learned to sail a Hobie Cat, experienced the full force of mother nature when a hurricane passed near by, and grew up in the slow pace of a small beach town where you know your neighbors. (Just don't let your cat wonder onto the beach. Tourist think its lost and take it home.)
I lived here from Junior High, High School, and went off to college in Gainesville where I met my wife, Kathy. When we graduated we went out west to visit relatives in Colorado where we settled and have raised 2 boys. It was satisfying to see them get the same pleasure of going to the beach that I had as a kid. They are alway introducing me to new adventures. In this picture Kathy and I are about to go up in this biplane once owned by Randolph Hurst to get back and forth to mansion in California. It was their treat for my 50th birthday. What a one of a kind way to see the barrier islands flying low along the shore just like the seagulls and pelicans. Hope you find your own kind of fun in the sun. Enjoy our family place in Florida.
Bruce Carter purchased this cottage in 1996
My grandparents moved down here from New Orleans and turned the house and carriage house into 6 vacation rentals. They did this for 40 years. They turned over the keys to Kathy and me so it stays in the family for the next generation to enjoy sharing with great guests that come back year after year.
Location, Location, Location You will be vacationing on the closest beach to Tampa airport while also secluded from the vacation crowds. We are located in 'The Narrows', so named by the local settlers of the 1920's because the barrier island is so skinny here that there is only room for a single row of homes. The emerald green waters of the Gulf are out your front door and and yachts cruising the channel are out your back door. Water surrounds you like no where else with fantastic tropical views and a true island feeling. Our many repeat guests tell us that this is the most coveted spot on the 12 miles of world class beaches between Clearwater and St Petersburg.
My husband and I stayed in the Apartment 3 during the July 4th week. Having never been to this part of FL (always go to PCB) this area was a pleasant surprise. Apartment 3 is clean, comfortable and relaxing. It had what we needed and was perfect for the two of us. Bruce was very accommodating and easy to reach and work with. The beach is uncrowded and quiet which is very nice!! Although we didn't cook, the kitchen did have all of the things I would need if I had cooked. I loved that beach chairs and umbrellas were offered for our use, and very nice ones at that. My husband and I enjoyed a very good pizza at Slyce which is in walking distance, good seafood at The Pub, also in walking distance, however, if you eat outside beware of the seagulls who will give you little gifts. :) We also drove to Clearwater and ate at Palm Pavilion Beachside Grill and ate on the deck facing the beach. Silas Steakhouse and The Hut in St Pete were also good eats. I hated to leave, but reality calls. l will definitely come back to this little slice of heaven on earth and contact Bruce!!
My husband and I were searching for the perfect destination right on the beach. Well, we found it. Our room was 30 steps to the beautiful white sand that we woke up looking at. We had the small efficiency space, but it was plenty of room for 2 people. My only suggestion for that space would be a couple of comfortable chairs or a loveseat (if it's possible) - as when you are there in the evening, if the weather isn't great, you have no where to sit but at a small dining table. The property was cheery, clean and well-maintained with all the essential ammenities (including laundry)! There is a little bar/restaurant right down the street that we could walk to. There are also several other wonderful places to eat very close by. Wonderful! We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a great getaway! The staff is courteous and welcoming. See you next year!
My wife and I stayed during Thanksgiving week and really enjoyed it. It's in a great location on the beach and across the street from the intercoastal. We paddle boarded in both the gulf and intercoastal, biked all over the area, and had a great time.
The room was perfect for us. It had plenty of room, a full kitchen, and it's own private entrance. The owner was great to work with, very responsive, and willing to help in any way. We will be back and will probably bring some friends with us.
This is the second year that my Mom and I have chosen to stay at this property. The house was built in 1925, but you would never know it. The rooms are nicely decorated and modern. The owners are very nice people and very easy to work with. I would return anytime. We had a wonderfully relaxing time.
Great ocean views and clean rooms.
Plenty to do and great location. Great management of making sure we were happy.
I've stayed here several times and each time, I've not been disappointed! Kathy and Cor are great and the place is wonderful. I'd go back again...in fact, I think I will!
