An Authentic Italian Experience

  • 5 of 5

I have had the pleasure of staying at Casa Carolinda three times; 2007, 2010, 2013. I am completely in love with the little village of Introdaqua, tucked in the Abruzzo mountains. While most of the people of Introdaqua do not speak English, they make you feel right at home and if you allow, they treat you like a local. Casa Carolinda is a modern domicile in an ancient ruin. The inside is very comfortable and can sleep up to 6+, but really 5 most comfortably. My nephew and I have a favorite memory from our time there in 2013. Each morning we would get up, start the coffee and then head up the village road to the “center” of town. We would stop by the bread shop to pick up fresh baked bread , but make sure to put in your order the day before. Then on to the little market or if you are there on a Thursday, you can go to the street market in the town square, and pick up fresh cheeses, tomatoes, fruit, or whatever sounds great for breakfast. As you walk the streets of Introdaqua, the locals give you a nod as a greeting. Evenings are spent with the locals at one of the most popular, family run restaurants located down a country road, La Trota. We usually eat there each night of our visit. On the first night of our last visit, they had an English speaking patron as if we were coming again the next night, we assured them that we would be there. When we arrived the next night we were greeted with a table reserved for our family. Living like a true local! If you are lucky you may catch the village band performing. Last visit they began to assemble in the middle of the town with rain threatening. As the began their second number the rain began to pour down. We were so disappointed we didn’t get to hear them longer. The all male band was made up of young boys of 8 to old men of the village. The larger town next door has a great market twice a week with many good finds and a real taste of local life. I will be back!

A delightful stay in a medieval Italian home

  • 5 of 5

We made our 2nd visit to Casa Carolinda in October 2014. We love this old medieval town of Introdacqua. The home is charming and very cozy. It is very comfortable and so aesthetically pleasing. It is very clean and well-maintained. We enjoyed hikes in the surrounding hills, and strolling the delightful old streets. A favorite pastime was drinking a cappuccino in one of the local cafes, and don't miss Saturday's outdoor market in the town square. We've always found something to buy! To spend one whole week in a foreign country and not see another tourist is really special.

Sulmona is about a 10 minute drive and allows for a larger town experience with more restaurants and shops. It is the birthplace of the Roman poet, Ovid, in 43 B.C. It also still has that old world charm. We would highly recommend Casa Carolinda to our family and friends.

CASA CAROLINDA: the real deal for experiencing rural Italian life!

  • 4 of 5

Casa Carolinda: this is the real deal for those wanting to experience Italian rural life in a non-touristy, thoroughly enjoyable way, yet be close enough to cities of interest. You’ll find Casa Carolinda at the end of a typical narrow street in a typical small Abruzzo hillside town. Inside you’ll find comfortable sleeping accommodations, a cozy living room with couch and television, a kitchen with table, dishwasher, & clothes washer, as well as essential items for cooking and serving.

Be sure to order your bread/rolls from the bakery the day before you want them so that they’ll be waiting for you nice and fresh. And check out the weekly farmers’ market for fresh veggies and meat/fish — and the restaurant in the little hotel outside of town for genuine Italian cuisine. Easily enjoy a visit to very nearby Sulmona, the city in which George Clooney filmed “The American.” This is a city that offers a variety of intriguing shops, delicious eateries, and a twice-weekly farmers’ market that seemingly sells everything!

And beyond Sulmona, but not far, is a treasure trove of little hillside villages to investigate: Pacentro, where Madonna’s grandparents lived; and four other villages in which scenes of "The American" were filmed. And in just one day you can drive to and tour the Royal Palace of Caserta, which rivals Versailles in size and grandeur, and return to Casa Carolina.

If you’re willing to make a longer trip, you can do as we did and stay overnight two nights in Pompeii and tour historic Old Pompeii; drive the scenic, magnificent Amalfi Coast; and climb Mt. Vesuvius before returning to Casa Carolinda.

Ideal location, clean and conveniant

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with this town! Café in the morning and long walks eating figs and walnuts along the way. The locals were so friendly. The rental is right in the heart of the town, literally built inside the walls of ruins! It was steps from the castle, the restaurants, and could not have been more ideally located. Would be good for two couples (willing to share a bathroom) or a family.
