Cozy Converted Barn on Secluded 6.5 acres

People8
Bedrooms 1
Bathrooms1
Space 1,650 sq ft
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Overview

About the property

1 bedroom + large loft, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 comfortably (8 max).

Spend the month, week or weekend in a beautiful rustic converted barn on 6.5 very private sunny country acres with southerly long-range views of Mt. Anthony and the Bennington Monument (Stays of 2 or more weeks are progressively discounted depending on the length of the stay). Wander the park-like trails through 4 acres of old apple orchard and woodland. Why get a bed and breakfast when you can have a house and land all to yourself? This vacation rental is located in southwestern Vermont, less than 12 minutes from downtown Bennington (but still feels very quiet and secluded). Pick apples, bird-watch, and view other wildlife like deer, grouse, wild turkeys, rabbits, and an occasional black bear that wanders through the property. Excellent fly fishing on the nearby Battenkill river. Attend the summer horse shows in nearby Manchester. Enjoy the world-famous Vermont fall foliage. Watch the flowers bloom in the spring. Enjoy a bon-fire in the back-yard. Five major ski areas are located within an hour's drive. House is fully furnished and has slate shower, bear-claw bath tub, gas cooking stove, microwave, refrigerator, dish washer, cable, DVD/VCR, and wireless internet, plus two wood stoves and free wood to keep you warm at night (There's also central air heating and a portable air-conditioner if needed). There's a large downstairs master bedroom with its own gas stove/fireplace for ambiance and extra heat. There is a living room, dining area, and another small room that could sleep 2 with large electric blowup mattress on site. A spiral staircase leads up to a large loft with a full-sized spring mattress futon. There's also a love seat that pulls out into a double size bed. The barnhouse was actually part of a large picturesque Vermont farm just up the dirt road (and view-able from parts of the property) until it was rolled down on logs and converted into a house some years ago.

*** Although the website lists my cancellation policy as "no refund" this is not quite true (It's just that none of the other options I was given matched my actual cancellation policy). Please refer to the "Generic Rental Agreement" pdf that you will be able to view once you start the booking process (and must agree to before making payment) for details on my cancellation policy.

*** Contact me for additional information on steep discounts for stays of 2 or more weeks.

About Lars

Lars (pictured here with his childhood sweetheart and wife Kristen) teaches high school biology, chemistry, and environmental science just outside of Philadelphia. He is a VERY avid skier who also enjoys camping, hiking, mountaineering, kite-surfing, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and spending time with his wife and children. Kristen teaches electronic engineering at the college level and is an avid wind surfer, hiker, and quickly improving skier.

Lars purchased this barn in 2003

Why Lars chose South Shaftsbury

This is the perfect property to relax and unwind in total privacy. Vermont in general is a very relaxed, friendly place. If you are looking for stress reduction, a romantic get-away, and tons of outdoor activities, you found the perfect place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We recently spent one week at the barn during Thanksgiving. It was an idyllic place, perfect for relaxing and spending time with family and friends. The barn was warm and cozy. It took very little effort to keep the wood stove going. I could see myself spending a month at the barn - hibernating with a pile of books and taking leisurely walks around the property. It was very comfortable to share with three teenage girls. They occupied the loft area and we had a bedroom to ourselves. Thanks you Lars!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week in this home and can’t wait to return! Everything inside was comfortable and clean and really cool! They turned a neat old barn into an upscale and peaceful retreat. The kitchen was fully stocked with more than we are used to in rentals. The bed was very comfortable (really big bedroom), and the bathroom was really neat with a clawfoot tub by a huge picture window that we unfortunately didn’t find time to use.

We were too busy having fun in the amazing yard! It’s huge and extremely well kept. There are cool little gardens here and there and plenty of different seating areas, along with a super nice fire pit. The solar powered lights and globes are so magical at night! And the trails on the property were very neat also. The owners have put so much time into making the outdoors areas beautiful and fun as well as the inside of the house.

Speaking of the owners, Lars was a pleasure to work with. He was very accommodating and was great to let us bring our dogs. They had an awesome time in the yard and on the trails. Lars sent me ideas about how to find local hikes, and places to eat and drink, and to buy groceries and such. Be sure to go the the Market Wagon, less than half a mile away for great sandwiches and specialty food items. We also had great meals at Pangea and Marigold Pizza (ate there twice, get the burrata salad!), both 5 minutes away, and in Manchester (30 minutes) at Silver Fork and The Reluctant Panther. We also really enjoyed Madison Brewing Company and Allegro, both in downtown Bennington. Lars told me to go to Brown’s Brewery in Hoosick Falls, NY but we ran out of time! A good excuse to go back:)

The location of this home is perfect. It’s so secluded and private yet 5 minutes to North Bennington restaurants and trails (Paran-Frost trail was good!). It is ten minutes max to Bennington restaurants and all the shops and stores you would need. Manchester is 30 minutes North for great restaurants and shops.

Over all, the home, the huge outdoors area, the location, and the owner were all great. What a wonderful vacation. We will definitely be back!

Rustic tranquility for our honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

This house was everything we wanted for our honeymoon: rustic decor, countryside charm, fully stocked for a comfortable stay, impeccably clean, and ***no one in sight!!!***

So many thoughtful little luxuries in a secluded Vermont property make this house one of the best rentals we've ever had. We've already agreed we must return. Thank you, Lars!

Cozy, well equipped and lovely.

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful home in a gorgeously restored barn. Very well equipped with all our needs, great layout and lovely private area. The yard was great with pathways and sitting areas, the house clean, cozy and thoughtfully designed. We loved taking advantage of the rest and restoration it provided. Also a wonderful hike/walk down the road at the Robert Frost House and so much Amish goodness at the Market at the end of the road. Great place.

We loved our stay at this special place in Vermont!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and our 2 labs had a wonderful long weekend at this perfect place in Vermont. The house is both rustic and beautiful. There are no close neighbors so you have your privacy. The wood stove works great and after outside activities in the snow if felt great to sit in the living room with the wood stove and a glass of wine. Lars responded very quickly when I had a question and then followed up the next day to make sure we had everything we needed. There are several walking trails near by and great breweries and restaurants in a short drive. We will be going back and I recommend this place to anyone who wants to get away from it all.

This is your vacation spot !

  • 5 of 5

What other location have you seen on VRBO or Home Away, that has 59 out of 60, 5 stars in customer reviews ( to date ) ? ( There is one with a four star rating - always one spoiler ! )

The reviews, the pictures, they are all accurate. If you still have any doubts, call or text Lars directly - he is most helpful and accommodating. Our time at the Barn was perfect. What we needed was rest, exercise with walks, reading and good meals. Thank you Lars and Kristen for creating such a comfortable retreat home. We will return ! ( A nice touch with the blue icicles - ) David & Christine
