Haiku is Private Retreat on Acre of Land-20% Summer special

Bedrooms 3
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 6

We fell in love with St. John almost 50 years ago after a long stretch of years visiting Caneel Bay. The natural beauty of the island with its mountains, beaches, woodlands, and trails attracted us and motivated us to bring our four children to the island. They, too, fell in love with St. John, the diversity of the environment, the coral reefs and white sand beaches, the people, excellent restaurants, and Caribbean shopping. Their enthusiasm encouraged us to purchase HAIKU, the first architect-designed house (by Daniel Sullivan) on the island. Entry is through a garden gate beyond which is a covered, open air living/dining room pavilion adjoining a tiled patio and swimming pool that captures the enticing vista of the turquoise sea. It feels like a tropical paradise when one walks through the gate to see the vista across Chocolate Hole Bay, capturing the natural beauty and romance of the island. Haiku is architecturally designed in West Indian style influenced by the Danish plantation great-houses. Built on one floor at ground level – there are no cliffs, railings, decks, or stairs - it is safe for children and is wheelchair accessible. Relax by the pool or in the hot tub, enjoy the views of the bays, the ships sailing by, and the hummingbirds and bananaquits that are attracted to the sugar feeder kept filled by our guests. The two bedrooms with bath are air-conditioned and separated by the living/dining room, allowing for privacy for two couples. A third bedroom is adjacent to the Master suite and perfect for another couple or children. The 3 bedrooms and living/dining room are outfitted with ceiling fans. The kitchen is fully equipped with a four-burner stove, oven, microwave, toaster, blender for cocktails, refrigerator, and plenty of cupboard and counter space. China, glasses, silverware, cooking vessels, and utensils are provided as well as place mats, dish towels, gas barbeque grill, and other amenities to make cooking easy and fun. Water is provided through filtered cisterns. A washing machine, dryer, and clothesline are located behind the kitchen.

What makes this villa unique

Haiku has wonderful views. When one looks outward, everywhere you look is another beautiful vista both close by and in the distance, yet privacy is maintained. The unique architectural style of Haiku allows cooling trade winds to flow through the rooms. You become one with nature and the environment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

..."We are having a marvelous time. You have been very responsive, as always, to our requests. The kids and grand kids always look forward to coming. The little guys alternate the pool and the hot tub for half the day......"

Heaven in St. John: Haiku

  • 5 of 5

Just a brief email to thank you for renting your house to us from 2/25-3/3. My family and I had the best time. Our 10 month old granddaughter began crawling there, and our grandson went snorkeling everyday at Hawksnest. The graciousness of everyone on St. John was fantastic from Carefree to the locals. And the house was magnificent. We just loved it. Actually, I would not go to sleep until I had seen the stars at 2AM. Unbelievable. The aquamarine water, just everything. Superb! How lovely to have a cup of coffee poolside in the AM and to just sit and read and unwind.

Our favorite place

  • 5 of 5

We have been to St. John 20 times and for the last 8 years we have stayed at Haiku. The house is well designed and well maintained. The views are nice, it is private and very well located and convenient to town. It suits us perfectly whether there are just the two of us or we have a houseful of children and grandchildren. The open plan creates a lot of living space. We have booked our next visit.

Beautiful and comfortable nature's retreat

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't be more pleased with our stay at Haiku on St. John. We go to St. John to enjoy its natural beauty, warm and turquoise-bright waters, slow pace and friendly environment. Haiku to us was a microcosm of St. John: it's a beautiful house, with comfortable bedrooms and baths, and an open concept living/dining room that is literally open to the outside. You dine and lounge while watching all that nature holds, the beautiful foliage, water view, sunsets, and enjoy a pool and hot tub that seems to be right inside the house! There is a nicely furnished kitchen, and televisions and air conditioning, but it's the closeness to nature that is what this house is all about. You will see geckos, and an occasional iguana too! This house is not a sterile, cookie-cutter hotel room, but a unique nature lover's paradise. We loved how close the house is to town (5 minutes) and to the Westin Hotel just down the hill for some easy dining and amenities. We loved Haiku and look forward to returning there again!

More of a cottage than a villa

  • 3 of 5

Let me preface this by saying that we have only stayed in some of the newer properties in Chocolate Hole our past five trips to St. John. Haiku was mentioned to be one of the "original" villas in the area- and we would agree- it seemed to be that way. The open air great room was very cool- great stone work & the feeling of living outside while sitting on the couch, watching tv, etc. The patio/ pool were in good condition and the grounds were flat and safe for young children. What disappointed us about this home was the dated and tired condition of the interior rooms. I don't think it had a good cleaning in a long time. The paint is dull and chipping, there were dozens of dead bugs in the clear bathroom light fixtures, linens were so thin from being old they had holes, couldn't tell which towels were clean, cobwebs/dust/ bugs on the bedskirts, hot tub was falling apart, etc. Some elements were almost cabin-like. Bottom line, the place was tired. You get what you pay for, the price was right, but if you think you're going to get an updated villa, you'll be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thank you to our recent tenant Joanna who noted a few items that could make HAIKU better for all tenants. These suggestions have been noted and we have undertaken a course of action to incorporate her ideas. We are happy that she also noted many things she liked about HAIKU including bringing the outdoors into the living spaces. It is an unusual experience to live in an open style house typical of the plantation days and proud that we are a 3-5 star home. Owner, Alex
