A Russian word for country home, 'dacha' (rhymes with cha-cha) reflects the origins of the owner. It conjures images of relaxing days and evenings with family and friends far from the city's hectic life.

Alex purchased this house in 2000
The house was purchased and totally redesigned and renovated in 2000. It has since been used by our family as a vacation home. The skiing at Jiminy Peak in the winter, the hikes and lake swimming in the summer, the colors of the fall foliage combined with the year-round cultural offerings of Williamstown and Tanglewood made our times here relaxing and stimulating through the years.
The house is located at a tranquil spot and close to a skiing area. It has charm and personality. Make sure to bring enough drinking water. The house is well equipped and comfortably suitable for family of 5. Internet connection is very slow and the place can use a a bit of tidying and cleaning. The owner was very responsive to our questions and communication was good.
Thank You! It was great time at the nice place. We enjoyed our stay!!
We had the pleasure of renting the Dacha for 6 months, while my husband, and son worked in near by Troy, and we absolutely loved it! We arrived in early May, so we got to watch the property come to life with spring, spend the whole summer there, and then watch the leaves turn in the fall. All three seasons were absolutely beautiful. The ever changing view across the street is to die for. Sitting on a dirt road, with only one close neighbor, the neighborhood is very quiet, and peaceful. In the summertime, the farmers markets, and local farms make it easy to eat fresh, and healthy. The locals in the area were all very friendly, and welcoming.
The house is spacious, plenty of room for the 4 of us, and our three furry kids. Alex was always just a phone call, or email away, and was great about getting back to us when we contacted him. He was also very easy to work with, and made us feel welcome, and comfortable on the couple occasions we seen him.
MA & VT are both very close, we took several trips up to the Green Mountain National Forest in VT, which is a treat to see. We also took in some concerts at Bethel, the home of Woodstock, and took the time to explore the Catskill Mountains while we were there. The Lake George are is also close enough to do a day trip, and is a beautiful area. We made friends with the nice folks just south of us at Windswept Farm in New Lebanon, be sure to check out their farmer's market on Sunday mornings if you happen to stay in the summer/fall, they have a nice selection from several vendors, and John & Amy's sweet corn is the BEST I've ever had!
We have been traveling full time with my husband's job for 15 years, have been all over the country, and I can honestly say, that our summer in Stephentown at the Dacha will go down as one of the best summers ever! We loved everything about it, and hope to get a chance to go back some day!
Thank you, Alex, for sharing your home with us, there were many good memories made!
We arrived at the Dacha on Saturday, July 25th excited for a weeks stay in the Berkshires. While the Dacha'so unique Russian decor was intriguing, we were overwhelmed with an intense musty smell and disappointed to find all of the furniture was old and in disrepair. The couch on the main floor smelled of dog so badly, it was near impossible to sit on it, not to mention the cushions were completely mishapened and very uncomfortable. The dining room table had 6 chairs, one of which was broken and the only other seating area upstairs had two very old chairs, one with the bottom broken so the seat cushion would fall through to the floor. The sleeping arrangements weren't much better. The downstairs bedrooms clearly suffered water damage this winter and the musty smell was near gag inducing. One downstairs bedroom had just a mattress on the floor. The bedding was very sparse, and none of the mattresses had mattress covers. The master bedroom mattress had a big stain as well. There wasn't a coffee maker and we had to bring in our own water for cooking and drinking at the suggestion of the owner. The wifi router and modem had to be rebooted daily, and even then the connection speed was painfully slow. There was only one barrel outside for trash, which we filled the second day (there were 7 of us), so we had to leave bags of trash on the enclosed front porch the entire week. I emailed the owner several times inquiring about how to handle the trash situation, but didn't receive a response. The central a/c worked very well and the bathrooms had decent water pressure.
All in all, we enjoyed our time in the Berkshires but will not be returning to the Dacha.
We enjoyed this spacious home as a base for skiing at Jiminy peak and enjoying local berkshire attractions such as The Berkshire Theatre and Herman Melville's house. The home is bigger than it appears from the photos and has lots of charm. Our family of 5 and a dog were very comfortable and enjoyed sitting by the fireplace together as well as having some privacy. The house was clean and well maintained and the owner was accessible and responded quickly to emails. The house was well stocked with most appliances - the only things we could suggest to add/bring along would be a full sized coffee pot and a DVD player.
Four of us had a great time. Alex was easy to reach. He is a collector. The house is in a quiet area. We had a small bear sighting, as well as many other country creatures. We hiked a bit on Mt.Graymore. We went to see The Mound (Edith Wharton), the Taconic Sculpture Park, other wonderful sights and parks in the area. I would definitely recommend the house to my friends and family.
Notwithstanding the serene setting of the house, the area is abundant with culture,
Williamstown, MA (18 miles away) is a major cultural spot of New England. It is home to Williams College, the world renowned Clark Art collection and the Tony-Awarded Williamstown Theater Festival, which runs every July and August.
For music lovers, 19 miles away is Tanglewood - the famed summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and widely known as one of the world's most beloved music festivals (opens on June 28 and runs through August 30).
The Meissner's Auction in the nearby New Lebanon attracts antiques collectors every Saturday night.
