I retired from the Government then opened a Victorian Bed & Breakfast that I ran for 20 years. I then decided I needed something on one floor so I bought a chicken house & converted it into an Italian Villa, that took about 5 years to finish. I like working in the yard & garden so that was the next project that I went after.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2012
I then decided I liked to have people around so I had a cottage built on the other piece of property I have. I wanted to be able to have the people get in touch with me if they needed something, but not too close to bother them. Then the patio went in so they would be able to have a fire & a charcoal grill, people like to get back to charcoal once in a while even though they have gas grills at home. The fire pit lets them toast marshmallows & make s'mores.
The cottage is well appointed with all the new electronics & WIFI with top of the line linens, pots, pans, & everything else you might need including a food processor.
From the upstairs loft bedroom you can look out over the Shenandoah River & the mountains which can also be seen from the screened porch & NO BUGS! Four legged babies like it to along with the owners because they can look out & see everything that is going on & still be safe. There is a large yard for them to play in if they are voiced commanded, otherwise you need a leash to walk on the road or over to the river.
The surroundings of the cottage is peaceful, quiet, secluded, private, & serene, a place where you can relax & get back to nature if you want or just chill out on the porch & watch the deer in the morning & late afternoon.
A place where you can totally relax!
From the initial contact, Shar made this a wonderful experience. She was friendly, informative and easy to get in contact with. I emailed multiple times with questions and each time she responded with humor and additional info. Staying at Bittersweet is like going home and Shar is your favorite aunt. If I wasn't on a romantic getaway, I would have asked her to join us for some wine by the fire! Everything we needed was available which made the weekend easy. The cottage was extremely clean and well kept. The property is beautiful and the views are outstanding. It was very quiet except for the sound of the river which was so relaxing. We will definitely be staying here again.
Lenny and I are so glad to have found this little piece of heaven in the Luray, VA area. We planned only a two night stay since we were visiting for a wedding but now we wish we would have stayed longer. You home is very cozy and clean. You have put so much thought into the detail and decor. We were especially glad our dogs were welcome. Thank you for your personal attention during our stay. We look forward to coming back many times.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the Labor Day holiday. Everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. Shar was the perfect host who was as close or as far away as you needed. We arrived late and were welcomed with baked chocolate chip cookies. Her home had all we needed and more. This is a small property but is perfect for up to four guests. There are great views of the river and mountains from the porch or dining area. We followed Shar's recommendation of a local canoeing company that was a great excursion. No complaints and we left feeling that it was time well spent.
My 6-year old daughter and I only stayed here for 3 short nights, but it was a great time. The house was the perfect size for us. The location is great, just a 10-15 minute drive down to the main town in Luray where there is a variety of shops, grocery store, movie theater, greenway, etc. The house is on a secluded street and it was wonderful to sit with my daughter out on the deck building legos with view the river out the screened windows. The yard was also plenty large and flat enough for us to run around and play out there. House was clean and we'd definitely stay there again.
This beautiful cottage was a perfect getaway for our 22nd anniversary. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Even in winter, the mountains are beautiful. One caveat: no cell service at the cottage, but that did not bother us in the least. Luray is beautiful. We enjoyed the Hawksbill Greenway. Gathering Grounds coffee shop was excellent and Shenandoah Moon gift shop is my new favorite store.
The beds were comfortable, the décor calming and the tub was a blessing. We are thinking of returning next year. Shar was a wonderful hostess.
Had a wonderful relaxing weekend at the Bittersweet Retreat. The place is adorable and very well kept. All the amenities you need along with many supplies are right there. The view of the fall mountain color and the river were spectacular! My husband loved the sound of the river. Shar was so sweet, loved the cookies and the recommendations. Thank you for a wonderful weekend. We will definitely tell others about your place and hope to get back real soon.
