Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Colonia Azteca - Casa Azteca

2 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Sleeps 4

Casa Azteca is a gorgeous Mexican influenced two-bedroom house for people who want to be able to walk into town, but be located somewhat out of the hustle and bustle of el Centro. Situated partway up the hill above the main Mercado, yet still within the boundaries of San Miguel's Historical Center, this sunny and bright charming house is constructed on three levels and offers all the amenities of a home away from home.

From the entryway, the ground floor level of the house features the master bedroom and its cozy sitting area with a fireplace, described by one of our guests as the most beautiful and comfortable bedrooms she has ever slept in. The queen size bed has a pillowtop mattress, fine sheets and comforters. A large walk-in closet is next door to the double-sink bathroom with its colorful tilework, polished cement counter tops and large bath- shower.

At the end of the entryway, framed by a beautiful arch is an oasis garden area with a large date palm and plants open to the sky, bringing lots of light into the master bedroom.

Up the staircase, you come to the main living floor of the house, complete with a second fireplace, flatscreen TV, a built-in DVD player and a CD player with iPod docking station. The well-outfitted kitchen with its polished cement counter tops and center island includes everything you will need for the most simplest meal to hosting the most elaborate dinner party. This then opens onto a sunny terrace with chairs and table along with a barbecue station. A dining area and half-bath are also on this level. This great room has wonderful light throughout the day, which is not all that common in most San Miguel homes.

One more level up and you find the second guest bedroom, as well as a sunny roof terrace with vistas across San Miguel's historic Centro toward the western sunset. Five of San Miguel's famous churches are visible from the terrace, but you may prefer simply to relax with a good book on the lounge chairs and enjoy the afternoon sun. This bedroom has another queen size bed, also with pillowtop mattress and fine bed linens, plus an en-suite bathroom.

The house rental includes the maid services of Angelica 3 times a week, wireless Internet connection for your own laptop, cable TV , and local Telmex phone service. A Vonage line is also included in the house, which guests can use for free calls back to the States.

Casa Azteca comfortably can sleep four but there is a self inflating mattress bed available at no extra charge that can accommodate two more people. Guests must be 25 years or older to rent and stay in Casa Azteca. Family's with their children are of course welcome.

About Andy and Dorothy

We have lived in San Miguel de Allende for the past 15 years. We are travelers at heart and have lived in Germany, California, Kyoto, Osaka and India. We understand how important it is to feel at home when you are traveling, ie comfortable beds, great cooking facilities and a hot, hot shower. Dorothy and I started our lives together 34 years ago, we had no money but we did have an old yellow Datsun, a tent and a somewhat sketchy camping stove.

We graduated then to youth hostels and backpacks to hotels that only Kérouac in his Dharma Bum days could love (as did we) to the style of living that we would now like to offer you. This then, is our new adventure, providing a comfortable beautiful home away from home, for other travelers.

Why Andy and Dorothy chose San Miguel de Allende

Casa Azteca is elegant, beautifully decorated with all the comforts of home. The Chef's Kitchen and BBQ area lends itself to entertaining new found friends or just whipping up a cozy meal for yourself. The Rooftop view is a perfect place for your evening beverage of choice and watching San Miguel's sunset.

What makes this house unique

Casa Azteca is only a few blocks up from the main Jardin yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of downtown to truly give you a sense of peace and quiet.

This beautiful home has it all -- views, style, comfort, convenience and owners who are instantly accessible and committed to making your time in San Miguel the best possible vacation. Separating the sleeping floors allows everyone plenty of privacy and the very comfortable beds assure a good night's sleep. The kitchen is well outfitted for cooking and the house includes many extras that allow guests to pack light such as his and hers robes in both bedrooms and hair dryers in both baths. The location in a friendly residential neighborhood is great for views of the city and quick trips to the mercado for beautiful produce and flowers. Angelica keeps the place neat and clean and couldn't be more accommodating. You can reserve this property with total confidence.

Casa Azteca

  • 5 of 5

Each year I travel with my elderly mom to San Miguel. Finding the perfect situation for our special needs is important, Casa Azteca fit the bill perfectly. It was our eighth house in which to spend a month in San Miguel. Upon arrival I noticed the neighborhood full of smiling faced children and their families. What a joy to visit Mexico and not share a gated parking lot with tourists or expats but with the real Mexico! We felt completely safe and at home right away.

One of the first requirements for us is the ability for taxis to pull directly in front of the house. While Mom took a quick 40 peso trip to town I could stroll down 3 blocks to the mercado, Leo's grocery, the pharmacy or the liquor store. Back up the hill with my fresh goodies gave me my morning cardio and I was ready for a day of eating my favorite food. The location is the best ever, if you stay in the center of town you are subject to road closures at night and dark walks home.

Everything in the house works beautifully. The beds are high quality and the furniture in the living room is comfy. Showers and fireplaces and even an electric blanket for the cooler nights. Having a Vonage phone saves so much money keeping in touch with home. All to say, Dorothy and Andy were the perfect hosts and I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

It was a pleasure staying at Dotothy and Andy's beautiful Casa Azteca . Dotothy and Andy met us at home on arrival, gave us a complete tour and had special touches like fresh flowers on the dinning room and both bedrooms, fresh coffe and bread and a bottle of wine.

The house is fabulous, very clean, quite, with everything you need. The beds are very comfortable The location was convenient to town, museums, churches, restaurants , markets, but still peaceful. The neighborhood is very safe. We enjoyed everything and we definitely recommend Casa Azteca.!

Beautiful, Well Appointed, Convenient Location

  • 5 of 5

It was a pleasure staying at Andy and Dorothy's beautiful San Miguel home in Colonial Azteca. While the pictures on VRBO show many of the virtues of the home, it was even more impressive in person. The view from the 3rd floor patio is amazing, especially at Christmas with the twinkling lights and the church in the foreground.

As beautiful and comfortable as the home is what really made it special were Andy and Dorothy's special touches like his and her bathrobes, premium soaps and towels, the bottle of wine waiting on the dining room bar, and the fresh flowers. Andy and Dorothy met us at the home on arrival, gave us a complete tour, and turned over the keys making sure we had everything we needed.

The home is only 10 minute from the Central Plaza and the local sites. The neighborhood is very safe and the neighbors friendly. One of our favorite walks was the nearby food market, Mercado de San Juan de Dios. Inside there are a number of food counters and eateries in addition to all the wonderful, fresh items to choose from. If you have a chance definitely make a point of having lunch there.

The home, the time of year, the sites, food and people made everything about this trip perfect. We'll definitely be coming back!

Perfection in San Miguel

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful 3-story home with everything you could want for your vacation. A little uphill from town - perhaps a 10-minute walk. My husband and I loved the safe and picturesque walk to town everyday and I wouldn't hesitate to have my mom (70) make the daily walk.

You enter a lovely hallway on the ground floor with a small outdoor garden. The downstairs master is large (but cozy) with a wonderful stone & tile bathroom. There is a huge master closet, a fireplace, a desk, and a fireplace. This room will stay quite dark if you are a light sleeper. The mid floor is perfection - beautiful open kitchen, small patio, washer & dryer and bathroom. We made a few meals here and loved it - felt right at home. The third floor is a bright airy room with a large patio to relax. Lots of light, another gorgeous bathroom, and a truly fantastic bed. Lots of windows to get a breeze throughout the day & night. Everything is decorated perfectly.

Our hosts were incredibly welcoming and helpful. We will absolutely stay here again should we ever make it back to this beautiful town!! We stayed a week, but could have stayed the year.

San Miguel de Allende is a city that manages to be both quaint and cosmopolitan at the same time. Once an important stop on the silver route between Zacatecas and Mexico City, its historic center is filled with well-preserved buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. With its narrow cobblestone streets, leafy courtyards, fine architectural details and sumptuous interiors, San Miguel de Allende is arguably the prettiest town in Mexico.

In 2008 UNESCO recognized San Miguel de Allende and the neighboring Sanctuary of Jesus de Atotonilco as World Heritage of Humanity sites, citing the town's religious and civil architecture as a demonstration of the evolution of different trends and styles, from Baroque to late 19th century Neo-Gothic.

Located in Guanajuato state, 265 km (165 miles) northeast of Mexico City and 96 km (60 miles) from the state capital, Guanajuato city, San Miguel is located within Mexico's hilly central highlands. San Miguel de Allende has no international airport so visitors usually fly into either the Leon/Bajio airport or the Mexico City airport and then take a bus. This is not a major drawback and may in fact add to the city's charm: the sound of an airplane coming in for a landing never disrupts the pealing of church bells, plus the effort required to get here makes it all the more enjoyable.

Walking is undoubtedly the best way to explore San Miguel. A car can be more of a hindrance than a help in town, though it can be useful for day trips to the nearby cities of Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo or Queretaro. When your feet get tired, hop on the sightseeing trolley that departs from the tourism office on the north side of the Jardín Principal. After a tour of the main points of interest, it will take you to the Mirador, a lookout point where you'll be able to have a panoramic view of the city.

There is a substantial expat community in San Miguel, so it's easy to find services in English and hotels and restaurants cater to the Americans, Canadians and Europeans who flock here. It is still very much a Mexican town, however, where locals cheerily co-exist with the foreigners who visit or call this city home.

San Miguel is a preferred destination of art lovers. Whether you're an aspiring or accomplished artist, or just prefer to admire the creations of others, you'll be happy here. Studio openings, courses and workshops form a vital part of the thriving arts scene. Galleries, boutiques and shops selling a wide range of art and handicrafts are plentiful so it won't be hard to find souvenirs to take home with you.

San Miguel de Allende has an air of tranquility about it, belying the fact that there is always something happening. This is the perfect city for an extended stay. Take a Spanish course or some art classes and make yourself at home. It is safe to walk around day and night and the climate is pleasant year-round.
