About the property

2 Bedroom Elegant Home with Great View in Historical Center

Casa Azteca is a gorgeous Mexican influenced two-bedroom house for people who want to be able to walk into town, but be located somewhat out of the hustle and bustle of el Centro. Situated partway up the hill above the main Mercado, yet still within the boundaries of San Miguel's Historical Center, this sunny and bright charming house is constructed on three levels and offers all the amenities of a home away from home.

From the entryway, the ground floor level of the house features the master bedroom and its cozy sitting area with a fireplace, described by one of our guests as the most beautiful and comfortable bedrooms she has ever slept in. The king size bed has a pillowtop mattress, fine sheets and comforters. A large walk-in closet is next door to the double-sink bathroom with its colorful tilework, polished cement counter tops and large bath- shower.

At the end of the entryway, framed by a beautiful arch is an oasis garden area with a large date palm and plants open to the sky, bringing lots of light into the master bedroom.

Up the staircase, you come to the main living floor of the house, complete with a second fireplace, flatscreen TV, a built-in DVD player and a CD player with iPod docking station. The well-outfitted kitchen with its polished cement counter tops and center island includes everything you will need for the most simplest meal to hosting the most elaborate dinner party. This then opens onto a sunny terrace with chairs and table along with a barbecue station. A dining area and half-bath are also on this level. This great room has wonderful light throughout the day, which is not all that common in most San Miguel homes.

One more level up and you find the second guest bedroom, as well as a sunny roof terrace with vistas across San Miguel's historic Centro toward the western sunset. Five of San Miguel's famous churches are visible from the terrace, but you may prefer simply to relax with a good book on the lounge chairs and enjoy the afternoon sun. This bedroom has another queen size bed, also with pillowtop mattress and fine bed linens, plus an en-suite bathroom.

The house rental includes the maid services of Angelica 3 times a week, wireless Internet connection for your own laptop, cable TV , and local Telmex phone service.

Guests must be 25 years or older to rent and stay in Casa Azteca. Family's with their children are of course welcome. Please be advised we have a four person maximum rule for Casa Azteca this does not include babies. If this rule is violated there will be a $50.00 per night, per person charge. About Andy and Dorothy

We have lived in San Miguel de Allende for the past 17 years. We are travelers at heart and have lived in Germany, California, Kyoto, Osaka and India. We understand how important it is to feel at home when you are traveling, ie comfortable beds, great cooking facilities and a hot, hot shower. Dorothy and I started our lives together 35 years ago, we had no money but we did have an old yellow Datsun, a tent and a somewhat sketchy camping stove.

We graduated then to youth hostels and backpacks to hotels that only Kérouac in his Dharma Bum days could love (as did we) to the style of living that we would now like to offer you. This then, is our new adventure, providing a comfortable beautiful home away from home, for other travelers.

Why Andy and Dorothy chose Colonia Azteca

Casa Azteca is elegant, beautifully decorated with all the comforts of home. The Chef's Kitchen and BBQ area lends itself to entertaining new found friends or just whipping up a cozy meal for yourself. The Rooftop view is a perfect place for your evening beverage of choice and watching San Miguel's sunset.

What makes this house unique

Casa Azteca is only a few blocks up from the main Jardin yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of downtown to truly give you a sense of peace and quiet.

Still “a hike” away from Centro but sometimes that is good

  • 4 of 5

We did enjoy our retreat. Perfect for 2 couples. Mostly bright in the daytime but kind of dark street at night. We are not late-night people so that wasn’t an issue. Beds very comfortable. Kitchen well-stocked (2nd floor) and we spent a good bit of our down-time there. Would recommend to owners to remove the pots in the way of the city view (and sunset) on both terraces. Good place for yoga on top floor bedroom. Can’t put toilet paper in toilets so would also recommend a “covered” trash can. I know, I know its Mexico and the plumbing is old. Would also have liked the option of brighter lighting on the first floor. Had to go to the kitchen area to put on my makeup. Nice to be able to make your own coffee and have a bite of breakfast at “home”. Owners were COMPLETELY accommodating, these are just upgrading suggestions.

FANTASTIC PROPERTY!!!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great, reasonably priced property, within walking distance of everything you want to see when you are traveling to San Miguel.

The property was exactly as described, and the pictures do it justice. We stayed at beautiful Casa Azteca for a week, and I can see why the Watson's get rave reviews. The home is very functional, great reading material in the downstairs master closet, everything you could want in a kitchen, and the views from the balconies, especially the third floor, are breathtaking.

The one thing I was not prepared for is the walk back UP the hill to Casa Azteca from the center of town. Make sure you take good walking shoes, and even those will take a beating. The cobblestones are large and hard to walk on, especially up hill, and sidewalks are extremely narrow. Cab rides are very inexpensive from the center of town, 50 pesos as of last week, but well worth it.

A Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have picked a better place for our 2 week stay in beautiful San Miguel de Allende.

The lay out of the casa is perfect to guarantee privacy with one super spacious bedroom on the first floor and the other on the third, with kitchen and living room on the second.

The house is very tastefully decorated and everything you could possibly need is at your beckon call. We prepared wonderful meals in this neat kitchen, with fresh ingredients we purchased a mere 6 minute walk down a picturesque cobblestone hill at a most colorful local farmers market.

A real treat is the roof top balcony that overlooks all of SMA , we spent quite a lot of time up there, relaxing and enjoying the view.

The Owners of this house Andy and Dorothy are absolutely delightful as is Angelica, the house keeper, who keeps the place meticulously clean.

3 1/2 months is too short a visit to SMA!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit to San Miguel and we looked forward to our stay at Casa Azteca. Our first visit was in the middle of centro, so this area was new to us and expanded our horizons. At the bottom of the hill is a huge market. It is a delight to find your favorite vendor and buy the affordable, fresh fruits, vegetables and hot tortillas. Just below that is a huge artisans market. I love flowers and filled the rooms with color at a nominal price. Small stores 1/2 block away are convenient when you do not wish to carry milk or heavy items up the hill. (Walk slowly up the shady side and do not be embarrassed to stop and rest!) The cab prices at this time are 40 pesos during the day and 50 pesos at night. (Prices have gone up slightly as the price of gasoline is higher.) What a bargain! Write the name of the street down until you can pronounce it!

Andy and Dorothy were extremely responsive to any need, and were a great resource especially when we needed to find an elusive item such as watch batteries. Our housekeeper, Angelica, is truly an angel and keeps the casa spotless. She is organized and efficient. Although she speaks little English, we found that a plus as we are both studying espaniol.

The longer we stayed in the house, the more we enjoyed it. The terraza is perfect for morning coffee and a glass of wine in the evening --or anytime! Mornings often you will see hot air balloons and the sunsets are spectacular. We just viewed our nightly spectacle a few minutes ago and marveled that no two are alike!

I love to cook and the kitchen had most everything I needed. We had a few, small, adult parties and there is a great kitchen island and plenty of space. The downstairs bedroom is very large and we enjoyed the fireplaces on the chilly evenings. Upstairs you can sleep with a view of the city below! The atrium fills the house with light, and I became quite attached to the wooden statue, whom I called St Francis.

Now, as to the question of noise......San Miguel is a noisy, lively city. We just finished traveling for 7 months in Europe and noise in cities is a fact of life. If you want peace and quiet, go to the countryside. Church bells, dogs, roosters and other birds vie for auditory attention. And yes, the lovely, old door opens up to the sidewalk as do 95% of all doors in SMA. Tourists flock here for good reason: it is an amazing city!

We thank Andy and Dorothy for their friendliness and hospitality!

Car: not necessary

San Miguel de Allende is a city that manages to be both quaint and cosmopolitan at the same time. Once an important stop on the silver route between Zacatecas and Mexico City, its historic center is filled with well-preserved buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. With its narrow cobblestone streets, leafy courtyards, fine architectural details and sumptuous interiors, San Miguel de Allende is arguably the prettiest town in Mexico.

In 2008 UNESCO recognized San Miguel de Allende and the neighboring Sanctuary of Jesus de Atotonilco as World Heritage of Humanity sites, citing the town's religious and civil architecture as a demonstration of the evolution of different trends and styles, from Baroque to late 19th century Neo-Gothic.

Located in Guanajuato state, 265 km (165 miles) northeast of Mexico City and 96 km (60 miles) from the state capital, Guanajuato city, San Miguel is located within Mexico's hilly central highlands. San Miguel de Allende has no international airport so visitors usually fly into either the Leon/Bajio airport or the Mexico City airport and then take a bus. This is not a major drawback and may in fact add to the city's charm: the sound of an airplane coming in for a landing never disrupts the pealing of church bells, plus the effort required to get here makes it all the more enjoyable.

Walking is undoubtedly the best way to explore San Miguel. A car can be more of a hindrance than a help in town, though it can be useful for day trips to the nearby cities of Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo or Queretaro. When your feet get tired, hop on the sightseeing trolley that departs from the tourism office on the north side of the Jardín Principal. After a tour of the main points of interest, it will take you to the Mirador, a lookout point where you'll be able to have a panoramic view of the city.

There is a substantial expat community in San Miguel, so it's easy to find services in English and hotels and restaurants cater to the Americans, Canadians and Europeans who flock here. It is still very much a Mexican town, however, where locals cheerily co-exist with the foreigners who visit or call this city home.

San Miguel is a preferred destination of art lovers. Whether you're an aspiring or accomplished artist, or just prefer to admire the creations of others, you'll be happy here. Studio openings, courses and workshops form a vital part of the thriving arts scene. Galleries, boutiques and shops selling a wide range of art and handicrafts are plentiful so it won't be hard to find souvenirs to take home with you.

San Miguel de Allende has an air of tranquility about it, belying the fact that there is always something happening. This is the perfect city for an extended stay. Take a Spanish course or some art classes and make yourself at home. It is safe to walk around day and night and the climate is pleasant year-round.
