White House, having been recently refurbished, is part of a large estate, which encompasses a working organic farm (tours are available with prior notice). This home is a great base for exploring the unspoiled area, or for creating memories on the grounds at home.
Downstairs, the home features a generous living room with gas stove, and a spacious country kitchen that opens to the dining area. There is a full bathroom (with walk-in shower) on this level.
The four bedrooms are upstairs off a central landing. Two feature queen beds (each could be considered the master), there is a full bedroom, and a smaller bedroom with one twin. Upstairs the bathroom includes a tub/shower.
The Neversink River, home to spritely native brook trout, runs through the expansive property, and barring a drought, has a swimming hole that is sure to refresh. You will be drawn to it if for no other reason than to watch the changing light on the tumbling waters.
In 2010, a local couple launched Neversink Farm, an organic farm producing vegetables, honey, a huge swath of cut flowers, and chickens (fresh eggs, anyone?) in the fields behind the barn. The farmers are delighted to give tours of their operation, but please note: renters are not permitted to wander the farm (for liability and safety reasons), without their presence. Learn more about the organic farm at www.neversinkfarm.com. There is a farm store on site which sells fresh organic produce grown on the premises and eggs from free range chickens raised organically.
Next door up the road a bit (walking distance, but not too close), Halls Mills is another Red Cottage rental on the same estate, which sleeps 8. So larger groups or two families who would like to vacation together can find accommodation for 15 people max between them.
White House is a bright renovated farm house with great proximity to the Neversink River and the abundant hiking opportunities of the Catskill Forest Preserve.
This was an excellent location for an extended stay--a month in my case. The house--dating from the mid-19th century--has been completely remodeled inside (though with some of the original 11-inch floorboarding kept). Kitchen, bathrooms (upstairs, downstairs) and bedrooms are completely modern. Comfortable country furniture. The chief value is location. The property extends behind the house down to the Neversink River, a wonderful place to wade (with small kids), swim, or just sun out. Part of the property is occupied by an organic farm with a very extensive local customer base. The nearby woods afford some hiking, Slide Mountain is a 12-mile drive for a real hike. There are local places for breakfast, lunch, takeout, or basic groceries; the organic farm provides natural foods. For a real shop, go to Liberty, 13 miles away. Nights are quiet (road traffic dies off after dark), cool, restful. This is a great place for a quiet country stay.
We loved the house. It has been beautifully restored with every modern comfort added but the historical integrity of the original design has been completely maintained. I am an architect and totally appreciated this. Not only is the house great, but the landscape is stunning. The house sits in a valley and out back is a (quiet) working organic farm where we bought fresh vegetables most days. Then, beyond the fields is a lovely stream where we swam every day. In the winter, one can cross country ski at Frost Valley, about a 15 minute drive from the house. And of course, in every direction, there is fantastic hiking. A highly recommended getaway!
