Located on the North Fork of the Shoshone River, Uncle Mike's Cabin has approximately 15 acres of privacy and is perfect for a family vacation. The mountains are close by and thousands of acres of National Forrest and Bureau of Land Management are available for hiking and exploring. Numerous wildlife such as deer and turkey can be found near the cabin. Large trees provide shade from the Wyoming sun. The steady rhythm of the river will relax your soul. The front porch swing provides a great place to take in views of Jim Mountain as well as giant rock spires remaining from ancient volcanic activity. The fishing includes approximately 1/4 mile of river with rainbow and cut-throat trout. The North Fork provides some of the best fly fishing in the lower 48. There are two outfitters within a mile of the cabin so arranging for a day trip on horseback can be accomplished with advance notice. The cabin entrance is located by following the driveway down a gentle hill. The front porch is covered and protects the entry. Upon entry, the hall opens to a bedroom on the right with a double bed and full bath (tub & shower). Opposite that bedroom another hall leads to the master bedroom. This bedroom has a king size bed and a full bath (shower). The laundry room is adjacent the master bedroom and provides a washer and dryer. Returning to the main hall you will enter the living room. The fireplace is located in this area and operates on propane. The high speed Internet is located on a table under the staircase. The windows on the west and south provide plenty of light to enjoy the sun while relaxing on the couches. The Kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher. cook top stove, electric oven, microwave, refrigerator and indoor grill. The mud room is adjacent to the kitchen and provides a place to change dirty clothes or store items you want to bring inside. If you ascend the staircase in the living room it leads to the loft. At the top of the stairs is another bedroom on the left with a double bed (sleep number). Across from this bedroom is a half bath (sink& toilet). The loft opens northward and contains three single beds. The window has a beautiful view of Jim Mountain. This is a perfect spot for the kids. The back patio has a propane fired barbecue grill and allows you to cook and enjoy the river. The outdoor table and chairs complete the picture perfect setting.

About Mike and Marcia Ray

I am related to some of the pioneers who settled in Boulder, Colo. in the 1880's. I was born in Boulder, Colo. in 1949 and grew up in the area. I graduated from high school and The University of Colo. I served four years in the U.S. Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam. I worked for government contractors, ( Dow Chemical, Rockwell Intl. and EG&G) for 23 years. Over the years I have raised cattle, ridden horses (some pretty sour) and planted and harvested hay before moving to Wyoming with my wife in 2000. Marcia was born in Powell Wy. and raised on Heart Mountain just east of Cody. She is the best thing that has happened to me and we've been married nearly 20 years. Marcia's folks homesteaded a farm in 1949. Her dad 'Elmer' was in poor health when we arrived in Wy. so we were glad to be here to help her mom during the last years of his life. Marcia's mom still lives on the home place so we moved closer to be with her. We were going to sell the cabin after we moved west of Powell, but the real estate market was too soft for us to accept any buyers. Marcia decided we could turn the cabin into a vacation rental. Since we don't have kids but lots of nieces and nephews, I am always referred to as 'Uncle Mike' (you can connect the dots).

Mike and Marcia Ray purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Mike and Marcia Ray chose Wyoming

I first visited Yellowstone in 1961 at the age of twelve. I remember we had fun, caught lots of fish and saw all kinds of animals. I remember back in those days you were allowed to feed the bears and we fed one named 'toots'. Anyway fast forward to unchecked population growth in Colo. in the 90's and I was ready to go back in time. After a few visits with Marcia's folks I was hooked. The fishing and hunting here was the same as it used to be when I was a kid in Colorado. Wyoming provided a perfect opportunity to go back in time. We found the cabin on the river and we moved to our little piece of heaven. I'm not sorry it didn't sell, I still sleep better in the cabin than anywhere else.

What makes this cabin unique

When we first looked at the cabin I was amazed at the high quality of log work and could see it was built 'hell fer stout'. I walked out to the river and could not believe how clear the water was. Then there was the smell...some trees actually give off a perfume. This sounds crazy to the inexperienced ear, but it is indeed true. One of those trees is sitting west of the cabin on the river. The smell of the mountain air and the river in the morning is unforgettable and I still can't get enough. The first time I threw out my fishing line using a 'grasshopper' , I was rewarded in short order with a huge rainbow trout. Average size is 16 inches or so, some go more than two feet in length. The wildlife is plentiful and deer often hang around the cabin. I fell asleep on the front porch once and when I woke up I realized that that a mule deer was quietly grazing just a few feet away. Suffice to say that the cabin is truly something special. I love it and hope all our guests will find peace and relaxation there.

Peaceful Escape with First Class accomodations

  • 5 of 5

When staying here you do not feel as if you are in a rental but a home, as everything is very well maintained and great care is taken with cleanliness. The cabin is large enough to accommodate a group with plenty of room and yet provides areas where you can go off to be alone also. It is very peaceful with the river right off the back patio. Uncle Mike is a gracious host and makes you feel welcome and right at home. He is a wealth of information about the area and is happy to answer any questions you may have. This cabin and property are above and beyond what can be described with words. Truly needs to be experienced.

Excellent location between Cody and Yellostone on private grounds fronting the North Fork

  • 5 of 5

The house is big and roomy and in excellent condition . Everything you need is in the fully equipped kitchen stocked already with your basic cooking supplies, coffee, spices ect. A gas grill is ready to go. Everything was very clean. The most impressive thing about renting the house is the owner. He is the kind of person that you will almost instantly feel is a friend. Mike will do anything to help you. My 18th year in Cody in a row for a trout fishing vacation and this is the nicest house I've found to rent. This property is gated to insure your privacy. I hope to have the privilege of renting this house again.

Perfect Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful vacation! This was our first time in the Cody area and we could not have found a more perfect place to stay. The home is homey, comfortable and the décor is very nice. We had plenty of room for our family of eight. We enjoyed the patio and used the grill to prepare dinner one evening. The owner's, Uncle Mike and Marcia were so friendly and kind. Upon our arrival Uncle Mike met us at the house and made sure we had everything we needed.

It was wonderful sitting on the patio or on the front porch relaxing with the roar of the river as background "music". Watching the deer and turkeys was an added bonus. Our grandson's said it was the "best vacation ever" and they wanted to "move in".

Thank you Uncle Mike, Marcia and Jessica for sharing your beautiful house and allowing us to make wonderful, life long memories. Uncle Mike thank you for the extra care you gave our family.

A Great Place To Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Uncle Mike's cabin was great. Uncle Mike himself is a wonderful man who you can tell really wants you to enjoy your stay. We enjoyed seeing the turkeys and deer on a daily basis and sitting on the back patio while listening to the river and looking at the stars at night. If you're looking for a great cabin in the Rockies that will allow you quiet time and a serene setting while being close to the activities in Cody and easy access to Yellowstone this is the place.

Beautiful cabin and.setting.

  • 5 of 5

We met Mike and Jessica as planned and we followed them to the cabin. When I first sighted the cabin it immediately exceeded my expectations. We were given a thorough orientation of the cabin. Jessica had prepared a welcome basket with homemade candy it was a nice added touch. We saw a lot of wildlife on the property. Sitting on the back patio was relaxing with a view of the river. The cabin is well stocked with every utensil you would need. The cabin is extremely clean We would definitely stay at the cabin if we were in the area

If your plans include a visit to Yellowstone National Park be sure to check out Old Faithful and the newer gysers that are starting to spew their steam. Definitely drive through the Lamar Valley located in the Northwest section of the park. You'll likely see more Buffalo in that valley than you've ever seen before. This area is known for being one of the wildest in the park and visitors have seen wolves, elk, deer, and bear there. The nice thing about this is you can make a day trip and travel through Cooke City Mt. and down through Chief Joseph Scenic Highway back to Cody. The mountain views are incredible, and you can fish Sunlight Creek for Brook Trout. Things to do in Cody would definitely include a visit to The Buffalo Bill Centre of the West. The history of Buffalo Bill as well as western antiquities are beautifully displayed. The Gun section of this museum is world renown and takes a day to see. The Nature Centre features animals of this area and even includes a Grizzly Bear! Another enjoyable visit would be Trail Town, located on the west edge of Cody. Old western cabins and buildings have been placed much as they were in the past and you will feel like you've just seen the old west. One of the cabins belonged to 'Curly' who was one of Custer's scouts. Jeremiah Johnson is buried nearby. The Cody Nite Rodeo operates nightly all summer and is located just west of Trail Town. You can catch a western gunfight around 6pm nightly on the east side of the Irma Hotel if live entertainment suits you. If you travel east of Cody on Hwy. 14 16 20 towards Greybull you may encounter the wild horse herd that frequents the Mccullough Peaks area and are usually visible from the road. Other road trips include going south of Cody to Meeteetse on Hwy.120. Check out the museum and then drive west of town on Hwy. 290. The country is spectacular with views of Carter mountain and the Washakie Wilderness area. If Archeological Sites interest you I highly recommend going south of Meeteetse on Hwy. 120 for about 50 mi. to Legend Rock State Park. Petroglyphs believed to date back some 11,000 years can be found here. The images depict buffalo, elk, deer, big horn sheep and human-like figures. Very interesting to see and ponder. Finally, a trip to the Bighorn Mountains to see the Shell Canyon and Falls and The Medicine Wheel are all worth the time. Take Hwy 14 16 20 east of Cody to Greybull, then east on Hwy. 14 to Shell. Follow Hwy. 14 east to the Falls, then north to The Medicine Wheel.
