About the property

Great Swimming, Great Fishing, Great Canoeing, Great Family Vacation Spot

SLEEPS 8 ( Max 6 Adults, Children & Infants)

Our cottage was originally built in the 1960's and the Bunkie was later completed for additional space. The cottage and Bunkie are connected by a large deck overlooking the lake, which provides outdoor seating and a safe area for children. The main cottage includes the kitchen/living room open concept with two bedrooms ( both double beds), a bathroom with a shower and second half-bath. There is a wood burning stove for chilly mornings and nights. The cabin has two bedrooms ( 1 double / 2 twin beds) and a half-bath.

The property is non-smoking. Our guests appreciate we do not allow smoking anywhere on the property.

Our private sandy bay provides shallow swimming for younger children and a dock with a floating raft at the lake. The cottage comes with two canoes, a kayak, a paddle boat and row boat for your water pleasures. Bring your fishing gear ! Fish right off the dock or explore out on the lake. Many varieties of fish inhabit the lake including Bass and Muskie. Please note that Personal Floatation Devices are not provided.

Large motorboats are not recommended at our rental. While the lake does have sufficient depth, there are areas in the lake with shallow rocks which can be a hazard to boaters. Most renters have enjoyed the quiet of the lake.

There is an outdoor shower, camp fire pit and BBQ for your enjoyment.

The Norland General Store/Esso Station is handy for filling up with gasoline, basic food supplies and fishing worms. Coboconk and several other nearby towns are within close proximity for food shopping, The Beer Store, LCBO, Banking, museums, various activities and healthcare if needed. The Monck's Landing Golf Course is about a five minute drive for those looking for a round of golf.

About Brad and Anne Cooke

Our family has been on Head Lake since the 1950's and this cottage has been in our family four generations. Although various improvements and a number of upgrades have been made over the years, it's primarily unchanged from the original structure and still has that 'cottage feeling'.

Brad and Anne Cooke purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Brad and Anne Cooke chose Kawartha Lakes

An easy drive from Toronto and surrounding areas to get away from it all. The area is unique in that even after all these years, it's virtually unchanged. Our bay is sheltered from busy boat traffic that you find on many larger area lakes. Going out in the canoe/kayak is a great way to explore the nearby islands and view the wildlife. A perfect spot for nature lovers - Loons, ducks, turtles, beaver, and many other animals can been seen on the lake.

Just outside of the bay is Head River which leads into the unspoiled Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park. The park is one of the largest and least developed natural areas south of Algonquin Park. It protects an ecological diverse and biologically significant area with more than 50 vegetation patterns. The park has a low rolling topography which includes organic soils, flat sandy deposits, wetlands, bare bedrock plain and bare bedrock uplands with shallow soil patches, characterized by numerous rock ridges, including scenic cliffs and gorges, separating dozens of small lakes, rivers and streams.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage sits on the east side of Head Lake with beautiful sunsets from the main cottage and the dock. Excellent swimming conditions from both the dock and the sandy beach in our own private bay.

A Cosy, Quiet Getaway

  • 4 of 5

My husband, adult son and I enjoyed a peaceful week at Chipmunk Alley. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable, and the adjacent bunkie provided a perfect private space for our 22 year old son. The weather didn't fully cooperate, unfortunately, but we were very satisfied with the indoor and outdoor space. A vey nice place to kick back and relax for a week. Stunning sunsets!

Took my husband, 3 adult children and our 8 year old. We fished , swam, canoed, played board games, did a puzzle, had a camp fire, made smores, went for walks The only times we watched tv was if it was rainy. There is an abundance of flora and fauna on the property. The beds were very comfortable as were the cabins. The older kids enjoyed having their own space in the bunkie. The outdoor shower is large and has plenty of hot water. We all had a well needed break and the owners were very accommodating.

Fantastic family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for one week with our two kids (ages 9 and 15) plus they each brought a friend. We all had an incredible time! The cottage and second cabin were clean and well supplied with the essentials to make for a comfortable stay. The lake was perfect for swimming and fishing was okay too. We saw some spectacular sunsets on the lake each night! The added benefit of the second cabin was great for us as it gave the teenagers their own private space away from the younger kids. All in àll we had a fantastic vacation here and made some incredible memories!

Perfect family cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 2 weeks with our family, including 4 grandchildren, 3 years old and under, and had a wonderful time. The setup of the cottage and bunkie was perfect for us. The huge deck was great for the little ones to play and the rest of us to relax. Everyone loved the outdoor shower, so much that we never used the indoor shower. The cottage has a wonderful open kitchen and living space. The kitchen is extremely well appointed, everything you could possibly need. We mostly used the barbecue and loved the big picnic table on the deck. Bedrooms were a good size and beds quite comfortable. The third bathroom in the bunkie was a bonus. Lots of time spent on the dock and swimming to the floating dock as well as playing at the beach. We did not have much luck at fishing but not for a lack of trying. We took our own paddleboard and the conditions were great for that. Also enjoyed the paddleboat and canoes. We went for a beautiful hike in The Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park.

We biked to a local farm for eggs, free range chickens and maple syrup. The sunsets were spectacular! Feeding the bluejays was a highlight for the kids.

Communication with the owners was great, very quick response to any questions.

Would highly recommend this cottage!

Very Comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Head Lake this year. The bunkie is great to have for the younger generation. Caught some nice fish in the lake. Brad and Anne Cooke are very easy to make contact with and very keen to resolve any minor problems that might come up. We wish there were a marina for larger boat rentals on the lake, but we do rent a motor for Brad's boat, which meets most requirements.

Awesome week at Head Lake

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 5 old friends from high school searched high and low for a cottage that offered beach & dock, watercraft, enough sleeping options for both early and later risers, space for indoor activities and close enough to groceries and towns for convenience, while being well enough off the road that there was no traffic sounds, just the sound of the occasional loon and the lapping of the lake against the shoreline. Mission accomplished.

One of the real bonuses with this property was that the bunkie was on the same very large deck as the cottage. The second TV and small toilet in the bunkie, meant there really was a separate area for not only sleeping but also for some to seek solace from the group. Perfect for a second family as well. Although the main bathroom in the cottage appeared to have been re-done, we all chose to shower outside (shower is private, out of the way between the cottage and the bunkie and has hot and cold running water - so it really was delightful).

The weather was excellent and that helped our decision to mainly hang out on the dock and get into swimming in the protected bay in front of the cottage. The water was consistently over 70 degrees, a benefit to a shallow lake. The kayaking/canoeing were also excellent. The ability to launch from the beach made getting in and out of the water simple. We rented a stand up paddle board, no problem launching that either and again the protected bay let the less adventurous give that watercraft a try. (The shallow beach would be great for little kids too.) The steps down to the dock were fine for us, but the less sure footed would want to take their time and watch how they get down the make shift steps/roots.

There was sun all day on the dock and it also provided a great sunset vantage point. Indoors we could play games in the main cottage and relax with a book. But since the Olympics were on, the sports minded in the group were also able to catch up on the highlights at night through the extensive channel listings provided by satellite service. WIFI service was great.

The kitchen was really well appointed, but not fussy. The BBQ was an option we used a lot to avoid cooking indoors during a heatwave. The caretaker of the property lives a few doors away and came by to let us know a full fire ban came into effect during our stay. We had had a fire a few nights before, mmmm s'mores.

Highly recommended for groups of friends or families who want separate spaces!
