About MaryThombs, George J. Robinson, Co-Owners-Hosts

SunnyHill is a small family-run enterprise, owned and operated by Mary Thombs, with administrative assistance by her husband, Mr. George J. Robinson.

Because George is a disabled veteran they rely on Denise Pinter as Property Mgr. She resides in the nearby hamlet of South Kortright. Denise occasionally greets guests & attends to their needs when Mary and/ior George are unavailable.

Mary & George are committed to attracting and serving SunnyHill's guests as they would receive guests in their own home.

Guests of all ages, and people of many interests have found SunnyHill welcoming and comfortable.

Mary is a violin and voice teacher and church music director.

George is a retired teacher. After early retirement due to disability, he founded a non-profit fine arts services organization.

Evan, our son (16 yrs. old.) is, well, a 'nice kid,' and we love him lots.

Why MaryThombs, George J. Robinson, Co-Owners-Hosts chose Stamford

The Stamford area is 'authentic' country (principally dairy country); most full-time residents are 'locals,' having lived in the area all their lives, and thus as guests travel about and meet SunnyHill's 'neighbors' they enjoy a true rural experience. Frankly, we wanted to avoid those manifestly inauthentic, touristy faux- 'country' places- and the inflated prices one finds in the lodging and stores there. E.g., when you have a delicious, reasonably-priced breakfast in Stamford's TP's Cafe, you'll see and hear farmers and tradesmen talking 'shop' and weather vs.seeing tourists inquiring about the address of the nearest aromatherapy practitioner or yoga studio. (Not, of course, that there is anything wrong with those activities, per se. However, it's just that - presumably - one doesn't drive upstate to the mountains for that kind of experience when it is available much closer to home, e.g., on St. Mark's Pl. on Manhattan's Lower East Side.)

The beauty and variety of flora and fauna offered by SunnyHill's six acres (and scores of accessible surrounding undeveloped forested and pastured acres), and its proximity to four major ski centers were also compelling factors.

What makes this cottage unique

One example of how SunnyHill is unique vis-a-vis other local whole-house rentals: besides offering six lovely acres of seclusion, our cottage is a classic 'A-Frame' building with, among other features, cathedral ceiling, lots of windows, a wood pellet stove and a sleeping loft with views. Compared to conventional divisive, 'white box' houses, SunnyHill's A-frame configuration feels different (which is what one wants when one goes away to get away); it's open, airy, and bright. The ground floor floor plan encourages free-flowing activities, conversation and air- the east-west orientation ensures cooling breezes while the sleeping loft offers cocoon-like coziness.

Amazing little cottage for a New York city getaway

  • 5 of 5

Sunnyhill (as the host George calls it) was a great place to stay during our weekend away from New York city. The property is private and sits on 6 acres of land. The home was very comfortable and George was an amazing host. George really cares about his guests and is passionate about the cabin and the surrounding area. The home is filled with various pamphlets, books and local area guides to help you plan your stay. I have no complaints and would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a relaxing retreat. We did not want to leave.

Absolutely wonderful

  • 5 of 5

I came with my fiancé for a couple of days to relax and we were so pleased. George was an excellent host, he is so personable, kind and full of great recommendations for nearby activities. His attention to detail and care made our stay so enjoyable and relaxing. The cottage itself is so cozy, and the view is incredible. We loved everything about it, from watching the sunset on the porch to the morning light in the loft. The hiking nearby was everything we were looking for (the Catskills are only about 40 minutes south) overall it was a fun and relaxing trip filled with beautiful views and people we won't forget. All thanks to sunny hill!

A beautiful home tucked away in the catskills

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 4 people who went up to the catskills to enjoy the fall weather. We chose sunny-hill because of its excellent reviews and weren't let down. The reviews are precise, it is a beautiful home, well-maintained and comes with a great view of the mountains and wilderness. We met with the owner George who is one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. He was hands-on about everything starting with our arrival to departure and even suggested good places for us to go to for hiking, food, exploring the village etc. He also handed us discount coupons for several food places and the quaint town did not disappoint. We also had a meal at the Dinner Plate, the food was good, the staff extreeeeemely friendly and nice. We also visited the book village, it is serene and shops there have a good collection of antique books. Overall, I highly recommend sunny hill. It is a great stay for a catskills getaway.

New york city

little piece of heavan

  • 5 of 5

Every year in September we choose to celebrate my birthday out of town. We live in New York and we need to get away from the crazy city...when I saw the picture of this cottage, I thought it was so unique, I wanted to be there! and we were not disappointed! The place is secluded, yet not isolated and it is equipped with everything... we did a barbecue and a fire...perfect way to say goodbye to summer! But what makes it unique by the way, is the man behind it.. George is worth the trip on its own, so kind and nice, he welcomed us with a happy birthday sign and champagne to celebrate! and he has so many stories to tell... we are Italian and he made us feel home again... we will be back!

Owner's Response: Wow! It's so gratifying to have had the opportunity and pleasure to host guests like this young couple (from Italia!) and then subsequently to receive such a glowing review! It's so gratifying because it makes you feel that your efforts in preparing the cottage for their visit, being on call 24-7 should they need anything during their visit, and making oneself available in order to see them off personally - don't go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Well kept. Please

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Sunny Hill will certainly be a memorable one and will plan on our return. The cottage was fully stocked one would needs to make their stay enjoyable from the comfy pillows, to the coffee maker to the plenty brochures with plenty of points of interest. The cottage is well kept and very clean. Enjoy the breathtaking view sitting on the deck sipping your morning coffee or the night sky decorated with stars. I can't say enough about SH. George- a big thank you for your hospitality. You're a gentleman and a gracious host. Janice and Harry

Owner's Response: Mary and I consider the exclusively five star reviews like this one from Janice & Harry that we've earned over the 5 + years of our stewardship of SunnyHill as a reflection of the quality of the ilk of guests SunnyHill has been privileged and fortunate to have attracted. Janice and Harry were immediately warm, friendly, understanding - and so important to owners of rental properties - respectful and considerate of our concerns about the treatment of our property. They, and son Michael who joined later, were a pleasure to host and, fortunately as is often the case, are the kind of folks that made us at once regret their departure and yet feel happy with their plans to return, as they had come to attend an annual family reunion nearby (attending a group function, whether a Thanksgiving celebration or an annual family or colleagial reunion, being the reason for a considerable number of SunnyHill's bookings). Mary and I appreciate this review and look forward to greeting Janice and Harry annually in future.
