A Little About Bellport Village
Bellport, NY, is in the town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County on the South Shore of Long Island. Founded as a seaport by captains Thomas and John Bell in the early 19th century, the village was incorporated in 1910. Bellport is located on the shore of Bellport Bay.
Bellport is one of many small South Shore communities just across the bay from Fire Island, one of Long Island's top beachfront destinations. Residents enjoy the area's bounty of natural resources and beautiful water views. Bellport has its own strip of Fire Island beach, Ho-Hum Beach, a secure bathing area perfect for surfers, sunbathers and fishermen which can be reached by a village-run ferry at the Bellport marina. Boat slips in the marina are available to residents at a reasonable cost. Near the marina are fishing areas, a boat launch, a playground and a band shell for summer concerts. In addition, Bellport Country Club offers an 18-hole golf course and five tennis courts.
Bellport is both a low-key summer home spot and a year-round hometown a good choice for families seeking an alternative to pricier areas in neighboring Nassau County and those looking for a seasonal getaway without the traffic and crowds of the Hamptons. The majority of village residents live in single-family homes on quiet streets in this classic Long Island town. Bellport is a diverse community, yet everyone feels welcome. Homes tend to be larger on the south side of the village toward the bay, and there are more summer homes here. Home prices are a bit lower north of South County Road, though houses are smaller.
The Bellport Village Historic District is listed the National Register of Historic Places. The main retail strip on South Country Road offers a thriving collection of family-run antique shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants. Here also is the Gateway Playhouse, Long Island's longest continuously-operating theater. For more information on this wonderful village and all it has to offer, log on to
