Lovely Warm Mountain Hideaway Beautifully Renovated 18th Century Farm House

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,614 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 5 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, 6 Sleeps

Le Repaire, (the hideout in english) is a beautifully renovated 18th century stone farmhouse. It's tucked away in the Chartreuse mountains just 10km outside historic Grenoble. Virtually completely private; no neighboring houses. Totally quiet, you can hear a pin drop. This house is the perfect place for a writers retreat. The house is well situated to hiking in the summer and both down-hilll and cross country skiing in the winter. There are 3 ski stations within 20min drive and when there's sufficient snow, you can cross country ski right from the house. The house has high-speed (roughly 20mbps download speed) internet. It's heated with electric and wood. There is a lovely wood burning stove in the living room. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. Upstairs there are two bedrooms. One bedroom has a queen size futon mattress on a tatami platform. It's quite firm. The other bedroom has 2 single beds (a trundle bed in fact). The upstairs bathroom has a large bath tub suitable for two. Downstairs off the living room, there is a bedroom with a double bed and an en-suite bathroom. The kitchen is modern with a glass top halogen stove top and a microwave oven. Plates, glasses, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans are provided, everything you should need. There is a drip coffee maker as well. On the terrace, there is a table and chairs should you wish to eat outdoors. We always used to love eating out doors whenever we could. The house is suitable for children, however with very young children, we do not have child barriers on the stairs. Pets are acceptable. Please note that for the moment there is no television.

About owner/property manager

Penny and Mike bought Le Repaire in 1997. It had not been lived in for about 80 years. It was used primarily as a holiday home. When we bought it, it had no hot water, only one tap, and electricity that had been installed so long ago that the wires were covered in fabric! We gutted the house and completely renovated it doing most of the work ourselves while living in it. It took 10 years. We brought up our daughter in the house, she still loves to come back to the place to play in her special spot in the woods.

Why owner/property manager chose Quaix-en-Chartreuse

It's so rare to find a house in such a beautiful location that you can't see your neighbors. (There are houses not far away but you can't see them from the property). We bought the house because we had a vision about what we could do to the place, what we could turn it into. I think we achieved that.

What makes this house unique

It's so quiet in the house and around the property. You can hear a pin drop. It's away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It's in a region which is just filled with things to do out doors.

A very nice house, lovely restored. We booked with 4 people. It is between the mountains in the green, but just 15 Minutes of the center Grenoble. The house have 3 sleeping-rooms. 2 with double-bed and 1 with 2 beds. 2 Bathrooms with bathtub, a kitchen with all you need, breakfast room, washing machine and dryer, a fire place in the livingroom and enough wood in front of the house. it also have a modern electric heating system. A very nice Place to stay. The landscape around is beautiful. The house is clean and in good conditions. It have also fast internet. We will book again. Better than every Hotel i had the last 12 years in Grenoble.

Ruhe und Erholung pur!

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: Thank you! Danke sehr! English Translation of review: We spent some very pleasant days in the lonely and idyllic situated cottage in the mountains. After several summit conquests in perfect weather, overlooking the gigantic Alpine panorama we spent a few days of rain in the cozy house. The fire brought warmth and in the kitchen we lacked nothing, so that helped us [make] the delicious meals on the cloudy weather [days]. The house is in a secluded location, yet close (about 10-12 km) to Grenoble, where there are many different shops. The many curves [of the roads] and the magnificent view will remain in our memories for a long time. We enjoyed our stay and would gladly come again! Ursula and Thomas with Barney

The house is situated close enough to Grenoble to have easy access to a large city with many fine restaurants, bars and entertainment, yet in the mountains close to outdoor recreation with solitude and mountain views in a peaceful setting. Rare to be so close to town yet so much in the wilderness. No view of the neighbors. In fact, the only house you can see is on the other side of the valley!
