About Ray

Shawne and Ray currently live in Australia and have developed an extensive knowledge of Tuscany through many years of travelling there. As with many, over time their appreciation for the cultural richness, the beauty of countryside, and the food and wine has grown into a love of the Tuscan lifestyle. Several times each year they return to experience Tuscany and to visit friends.

Ray purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Ray chose Gavinana

The idea of spending extended time in Tuscany motivated them to purchase an apartment in Florence. Because it is their home when they are there, the apartment has been furnished and equipped to a high standard both aesthetically and with respect to comfort. When not in Florence, they make their home available for rental by discriminating travelers or business executives.

What makes this apartment unique

A 25 minute walk along the River Arno takes you to the famous Ponte Vecchio and Florence's historic centre. The Chianti countryside can be accessed within 15 minutes by car. After a day in the of sightseeing in the bustling centre, guests can return and relax in this sophisticated, fully equipped apartment.

The apartment is located in a neighbourhood of Florence which has wide, tree-lined streets and small businesses of every kind. Being outside the 'tourist zone' guests have the opportunity to experience an authentic residential neighbourhood.

A short, uphill walk following Via San Mineato al Monte takes the traveller to the famous vantage point of Piazzale Michelangelo. This is a wonderful spot to people watch and take in the magnificent city panorama and the mountains to the north. When we are home in Florence, our regular exercise route is to ascend via Via San Mineato al Monte and return along Viale Michelangelo. (Viale Michelangelo is a winding, tree lined boulevard with wide sidewalks.) A few minutes further takes you to the historic abby - Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte.

Fabulous apartment and exceptional host!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay in Ray's apartment this past month. He was an amazing host, very communicative through the entire booking process and even recommended local attractions and restaurants for us. He was gracious enough to arrange a reservation at L'Ortone, which was a fantastic dining experience. He also arranged a driver to pick us up from the train station. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Serena who was just as warm and welcoming and carefully talked us through the features of the apartment.

The space itself was gorgeously appointed, airy, modern and exceptionally clean. Wonderfully located in a quiet residential neighbourhood. the apartment is just a short 20-minute walk to the city centre along the Arno river and a 10-minute walk to exceptional views of Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo.

We highly recommend staying here and would love to come back again in the future. Thanks Ray!

Owner's Response: This is such a wonderful review to receive, not only for the very positive content but also because it identifies aspects of the rental experience that are important to us as owners — personalized service (should guests request it), the apartment's appearance and cleanliness and Serena's role in making your stay both comfortable and memorable. We agree very much with your assessment of our location. The neighbourhood is free from the touristy atmosphere found in many other areas. With just a little urge to explore, guests can be exposed to "authentic" experiences by patronizing the local businesses such as restaurants, pastry shops and deli's. As owners, we continue to appreciate that all of this is within such a short and picturesque walk to the historic centre and the fabulous art and cultural treasures that are Florence. It was a true pleasure having you both as our guests. Our best wishes for safe and rewarding future travel. — Ray

The best!!

  • 5 of 5

Ray couldn't have facilitated a better vacation - great information, exceptionally responsive, and a wonderful apartment. This is Ray's personal apartment (he rents it when he's not there), which is a far different experience and attention to detail when compared to a rental only apartment.

As mentioned in other reviews, it's a ~20 minute walk to the main area of Florence. We used the bus system given the weather (some rain), shopping bags, too much gelato or drinks...! If you take the bus, make sure you validate your ticket! We ran to a crowded rush hour bus in the rain and couldn't get to the front to validate, and I used my best obstinate powers to avoid the E50 fine.

The two restaurants close walking distance to the apartment that we dined at were Trattoria Gigi Di Lippi Luciano (great wine list) and La Piperna - both were very reasonable and good.

I have owned/managed multiple VRBO properties for 19 years, and I cannot possibly match Ray's hospitality.

We have stayed at many good quality vacation rental properties in Europe, but his beautiful apartment in Florence is definitely and by far the best !!!!!!

It is spacious, modern, super clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated, and the appliances and furniture are of very high quality.

As soon as we walked into the apartment, my wife was so impressed and she said she definitely wanted to stay there again on our next visit to Florence.

Another very big plus for this property is the owner, Ray. He is so kind and helpful, providing a lot of valuable information and advice before and after our arrival, and he has very good taste when it comes to food. His restaurant recommendations are excellent and on several occasions he even made the reservations for us :)

The major attractions of Florence are all within easy walking distance of the apartment and it was so lovely to stay in a quiet and peaceful residential neighborhood with so many interesting cafes, shops and restaurants. Thank you so much Ray and Shawne for sharing your wonderful home with us and for being such great hosts !!!!!! We recommend this property very highly and would definitely come back in the future !!!!!!

Wonderful, calm, spotless, minimalist haven

  • 5 of 5

Thanks, Ray, for sharing your beautiful apartment. It was Fashion Week in Florence: 95 degrees and sunny every single day of our visit. This apartment allowed us a retreat where we could stay cool, calm, and collected. Immaculate, quiet, nice cool stone floors, super-efficient and targeted A/C, comfortable bed/linens and couch, good reading lights, nice showers, and a nice bottle of wine and Nespresso provided. The calm decor is like a palate-cleanser after all the overstimulation that is Florence. We loved being able to walk to the sites in the center and then ditch the throngs and return to the apartment. Short walk to San Niccolo for good, low key dinner spots, and if you want a really beautiful walk (on a cooler day), you can make the climb up to Piazzale Michelangelo, with its postcard view of the city. One day, we traipsed to the top of the Boboli Gardens, and got to the Fort (Belvedere) and a taxi magically appeared and brought us back down the hill to the apartment - a wonderful day. I am not a figure-out-the-bus person, but there was a bus stop just around the corner where you could catch buses that went everywhere we wanted to go. The recommended coffee bar around the corner was great for the morning cappuccino and an A+ cornetto con crema. We appreciated the thoughtful hospitality.

We are more than happy to recommend this apartment, which filled all our expectations. We were particularly impressed with how true its description and photos are – there are no surprises. The neighborhood is a good place to get away from the city center, overcrowded with tourists. Yet “downtown” is easily accessible by bus or on foot. We knew the area from previous visits and enjoy its varied selection of bakers, butchers, fruit and vegetable stores and family restaurants, etc. It is a neighborhood where people live and work; I was particularly drawn to a carpenter´s workshop window, from where you can see everything from moldings, furniture or fireplaces being worked on.

It is a place that can easily be called home, to where one can return.

My thanks to our host, Ray, who made everything easy, and who did a superb job of getting us informed, settled in, and made happy to be back in a city we love.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your positive, generous review. It is reaffirming for us to have travellers who are familiar with this area of Florence reiterate our feelings about this area of the city - i.e. the richness of staying in an "authentic" residential neighbourhood which offers easy and quick access to centro. I appreciate, also, your kind remarks about the personal assistance you received. Anything which I can to improving the quality of the stay for our guests is truly rewarding - especially when a guest has so much knowledge from previous visits to Florence. We look forward to hosting you in the future. Grazie mille!

Appartamento Ricorboli is 15 min by car from the main train station (Stazione S. M. Novella) and 20 min from the main airport (Peretola). It is located near Piazza Ferrucci, on the south side of the River Arno (one street back). Viale Michelangelo, one of the most famous and beautiful boulevards in Florence is just a 1 minute walk away.

If you are a guest with a car, you will appreciate the easy access from the A1 (the Autostrada which connects Milan and Naples) and to the Chianti countryside. We are located outside Florence’s restricted traffic zone, so it’s possible to drive right to the front door of the apartment and park nearby.

We love our neighbourhood. The River Arno is 200m from the door and the wide streets and mature trees provide a marked contrast to the city centre. Windows look down onto Via di Ricorboli (a bustling street during morning and evening rush hours) and out towards Piazzale Michelangelo. Other windows look out onto a courtyard, the centerpiece of which is a magnificent magnolia tree. In early evenings, the bells from nearby Chiesa di Santa Maria a Ricorboli add to the sensory experience. (Chiesa di Santa Maria a Ricorboli houses a fresco - circa.1335 - attributed to Giotto.)

From Appartamento Ricorboli, Florence’s major attractions are easily accessed via a short, scenic walk along the Arno River or by using the regular city buses (ATEF). The bus stop is within 80m of the apartment. An uphill walk from the apartment to Piazzale Michelangelo, the viewpoint for magnificent panoramas, takes about 12 minutes.

Since the location is outside the area visited by most tourists, it has an authentic flavour, with Fiorentines going about their daily routines. There are dozen of small businesses of every description within 800m – everything from cafes, bakeries, delis, butcher, hardware store, pet shop, gelateria, bank, wine bar, restaurants etc. A major shopping centre is 1.3 km away.
