Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday townhome in Higashiyama - Charming Boutique Studio House

This beautifully renovated townhome is just a few minutes from the Keihan underground train line which offers easy access to the commercial center of Kyoto. Since it only a short taxi ride the location is ideal for those coming from Kyoto station. A great base if you have a JR rail pass and want to go on day trips to explore other places like Nara, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima etc.

Tucked down a side street away from the traffic and noise, Blue Tengu is a charming example of the manner in which citizens of this city have lived for generations. By choosing to stay in this lovely townhome, you will truly be able to experience Kyoto as a local. The house is located within easy walking distance of The National Museum, Sanjusangendo temple and many interesting historical sights.

Blue Tengu is close to shops and cafes, with lively Shichijo street just steps away. This street provides an interesting array of culinary offerings, traditional establishments and Japanese confectionary and tea shops in a charming ambiance that feels more like a village than a big city. There are two convenience stores close by which are open 24hrs.

Blue Tengu is a very old traditional Japanese studio townhouse which has been completely renovated. Modern facilities have been added to provide the highest level of guest comfort. The house has been tastefully decorated with elements of both Japanese traditional and modern contemporary styles. There is a very comfortable super-soft double bed and also a sofa bed. The house is just under 30 square meters in size. It should be comfortable for a 2-3 adults or for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids.

There is a brand new flat screen TV along with cables for connecting your computer in case you feel like staying in and watching a movie. The internet connection is high speed fiber optic with unlimited data. Portable wifi hotspots can also be arranged if requested.

The house is fitted with a range of modern conveniences to ensure you can relax and get the most out of your stay. The reverse-cycle air-conditioner both heats and cools to keep you comfortable no matter what the weather is like outside. The quiet and energy efficient washer-dryer removes the hassle usually associated with doing laundry while on vacation, maximising the time you can spend exploring this wonderful city. The kitchen is basic but sufficient to cook meals if you prefer to eat in. The brand new shower is compact Japanese style and has great water pressure.

Location: This townhouse is in a residential area with easy access to sightseeing spots, Kyoto station and downtown. It is not in the center for nightlife and entertainment. If you are looking for the most lively and noisy place then please consider Gion area a little further North.

Space: Blue Tengu may not be the best choice for those who need a lot of space. It is about 30 square meters which is spacious for Kyoto but may not be enough if you are used to more space.

Noise: Blue Tengu is located in a quiet, pleasant and convenient area but guests may sometimes hear the noise from the local neighborhood. It is just the noise of a Japanese city such as neighbours greeting each other and coming and going. If you need complete silence, this house might not be the best choice for you.

1. Will I have the whole house to myself or do I need to share with someone?

Guests have the whole place to themselves. No one else will be staying with you.

2. Do I need to arrange a meeting with the host to receive a key?

No, we use digital door locks so there are no keys. All you need is the door code which will be sent to you in advance.

3. Do I need to bring my own bedding or toiletries?

All bedding and towels are provided. There is no need to bring shampoo, body soap, coffee, tea, tissues, etc. But please bring your own toothbrush.

About Michi

We are an International Japanese/Australian couple who love this city and welcome the opportunity to share it with others.

Michi purchased this townhome in 2013

Why Michi chose Kyoto

The Higashiyama district is one of the best places for sightseeing in Kyoto. It is full of temples, shrines, gardens, museums and places of interest. Sanjusangendo temple is just 2min away, as is the Kyoto National Museum.

What makes this townhome unique

3min walk to local station and 5min taxi from Kyoto station make it a very convenient base for exploring both Kyoto and nearby cities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As a frequent visitor to Kyoto , I was delighted to find a brand new rental house near many historical sights and museums with easy access to Kyoto Station and local transportation.

Blue Tengu house is located in a quiet alleyway away from the noisy street and traffic yet close to many wonderful restaurants and shops.

The owners have managed to combine Japanese ambiance with comfortable Western style bed and furnishings.

In the future, this will be my Kyoto home away from home.

A nice little piece of Kyoto

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed our stay in Blue Tengu. It really added to our enjoyment of Kyoto, an amazing city. Blue Tengu was clean and well-stocked with everything we needed. It was well-located near transport and a number of sights as well as supermarkets, and restaurants. Also as a bonus, it had easy to use and fast wifi. It really added to our trip to experience lid on a Japanese townhouse and get more of a sense of life in Japan than a hotel would have given us.

A perfect base for exploring Kyoto

  • 5 of 5

Before our trip, Michi provided us with all the information that we needed. The access information was perfect. We walked from Kyoto station which took us about 20 minutes with our cases.

We have stayed in various house/apartment rentals in Kyoto, and this one is by far the nicest. Size wise, it was perfect for the two of us - like staying in a hotel suite with cooking facilities, but at a fraction of the price of a hotel stay. Michi has fitted the house out with everything you could need. As well as all of the amenities listed here, the larder was also well stocked, with some dairy supplies in the fridge and plenty of tea, coffee and ocha. On arrival, the house was clean and tidy and very inviting.

The living room has a comfortable sofa and a large screen tv, plus all of the connectors you could possibly need for connecting different devices to the tv, should you want to watch streamed or downloaded content on a big screen or play games. There are also guides to Kyoto and a manual for the amenities in the house. The manual also contains recommendations for places to eat, and we tried Okumura and the udon-soba noodle restaurant nearby. We also ate at an amazing okonomiyaki place near Gojozaka, called Kiraku - best okonomiyaki outside Hiroshima or Osaka.

The double bed is really comfortable. Extra bedding is stored under the bed, in case you need a blanket or extra pillows. For clothes storage, there is a large chest of drawers, a wardrobe and two bedside cabinets. There was more storage space than we needed, and it meant that we could put our clothes away properly, rather than having to keep some in our suitcases, as in a hotel.

The bathroom has an excellent shower cubicle, and the shower provides good water pressure. It was great to have a washer-dryer. We set it going before we headed out for the day, knowing that our clothes would be clean and dry on our return. There is a small table-top ironing board and an iron in the wardrobe, too.

We found the house really handy for walking to Sanjusangendo, the Kyoto National Museum, Gojozaka/Kiyomizudera, and catching the Keihan train to Shijo-dori for shopping and to Kiyamachi to see a bit of the nightlife! From Kyoto station, we caught the chikatetsu/subway to Imadegawa to look round the Nishijin textile area, and took the JR train to Arashiyama.

We would definitely stay here again and can't recommend it highly enough!

Charming house. Great hosts. Close to everything.

We loved the combo washer/dryer is extremely efficient and allows you to travel light. The house is spotlessly clean, comfortable, traditional and modern at the same time. We really appreciated the Western style bed after walking around the city each day. It is a lovely base to use while exploring the city. Although the bus and Keihan railway stops are only about 2 minutes away, we preferred to simply walk and occasionally jump in a cab. There is so much to see and do in Kyoto and the owner provided very precise information and assistance when we needed it as well as a lot of insider knowledge and restaurant recommendations. If you have the chance to meet Michi or Keith for welcome drinks or dinner we highly recommend it. Based on their knowledge and suggestions we believe we both saved a lot of time and money and also got more out of our stay. We are looking forward to returning to Kyoto and staying here again.

Absolutely great! Great quiet location, house was clean and well equipped. Short walk to Shichijo Station and Kyoto Station which makes this a good location for exploringexploring the area. Fresco grocery storestore, Family Mart and Circle K also a short walk away. We were traveling with our 2 young children aged 2 and 4. This house was the perfect size for us and being walking distance to everything was great with the kids. Went on day trips to Nara and Arashiyama..kids loved seeing the animals at both places. Approx 25 minute walk to Kiyzomizu-dera (some buildings were having renovations done so not viewable when we were there..but still lots to see) Owners were quick to respond via email to any questions we had. After staying at the Hilton in Toyko it was great coming to this little house in Kyoto..it was much more our style. Highly recommended!!

Great base for exploring

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is in a nice district of Kyoto, where there are a lot of interesting restaurants and shops around. It's a very good place to do sightseeing because its close to the Eastern mountains where so many intriguing temples, shrines, gardens and museums are located. The apartment is simple and clean, but it has everything you need! The internet was fast. The shower has great water pressure. The electric toilet was fun to use and the washer/dryer combo was a godsend!

Great communication from the host. Directions were very clear and we had no problem finding the place even though it is hidden in a small and quaint alleyway. We really felt like we were part of a local Japanese neighborhood while staying here. By the time our week was done, we had made friends with several of the neighbors and the owners of the tea shop on the corner. The Japanese are so polite and lovely to deal with. Michi was always helpful and answered quickly to all our questions. We liked it a lot and would recommend the Blue tengu to anyone.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Blue Tengu. The location is great, in a quiet neighborhood that is just a few-minute walk to the Shichijo station and about a 15-minute walk to the Kyoto station. The property is clean and the facilities are first rate. It was great having a small kitchen and laundry. The wifi was excellent. The owners were very accommodating and responded quickly to all requests. They also provide a lot of helpful information about the area.

Will will send a pdf file to the email address you provide us one week before your arrival so please be sure to check your email and let us know if you have not received them. The door code (no keys) will be included in these directions and you will not be able to enter the house without the code.

The best route is the Haruka express train, then a taxi from Kyoto station to Blue Tengu. There are also limousine bus and shuttle bus services from the airport to Kyoto which might be more convenient for those with large and/or heavy luggage. When travelling with kids we think you will appreciate being able to move around on the Haruka train and kids can go to the toilet any time, get drinks from the onboard vending machine etc. You also need not worry if there are traffic jams or an accident on the highway. Such incidents have often caused our guests to be late which is why we generally recommend the Haruka and not bus services.

NOTE: NO TAXIS: Please refrain from taking a taxi from the airport as it takes a long time and costs a lot (about Y30,000). If you get stuck at the airport due to delayed arrival and cannot use any of the normal transportation options then it might be better to stay the first night in one of the airport hotels. The limousine buses run right up until midnight.

From Kyoto station you can walk, take a bus or catch a cab. We recommend the taxi and will provide you with detailed directions which include photos after the booking is made.

WALK: If you do wish to walk then just go north from Kyoto station after exiting the central gate and proceed past Kyoto tower and the Yodobashi camera store. When you get to Shichijo street turn right (East) and keep walking about 15min until you reach Sanjusangendo temple.

BUS: To take a bus to Blue Tengu please find the bus stops just north of the central gate. Bus numbers 100, 206 or 208 will go to Blue Tengu. Please get off at "Hakubutsukan Sanjusangendo mae" bus stop.

TAXI: There are large taxi ranks at the north and south sides of the station. Please just follow the signs. Once you line up and the taxi arrives ask them to take you to "warajiya" restaurant. If they do not know this place then try "Yamatooji Shichijo". It takes about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic and usually costs less than Y1000.

NOTE: If you have trouble finding the house and have a smartphone or mobile device please search Google Maps for "Blue Tengu". Make sure you have the right house as there is more than one in Kyoto.
