The wonderful Deer Oaks Ranch House, set in the base of the Cochise Stronghold Property abuts the National Forest for fabulous hiking, rock climbing and wildlife and bird viewing.
Stay for a week and visit nearby attractions such as The Cochise Stronghold, The Chiricahua National Monument, Bisbee, Tombstone, The Bird watching Playas, Kartchner Caverns. The Historic Stronghold is where Chirachaua Apache, Chief Cochise, Geronimo and the band held strong in their stand against the US Military.
Restaurants, post office, gas and grocery store within 6 miles. Tucson is 1 hr. West. Sierra Vista is about the same. Privacy and wilderness galore!
This is my family's homestead.
Lynn H purchased this house in 1900
Could not imagine living anywhere else.
A very unique property tucked up into the stronghold. Very peaceful and private. Enjoy a one on one with nature.
The property is quirky, relaxing, and very comfortable. The surrounding area is stunning, with the Conchise Stronghold just down the road. We like cooking, and the kitchen was very well equipped for this, which was great.
Good air conditioning, which was vital for the hot temperatures. Would definitely recommend this property to others.
From wonderfully receptive host Jan to quaint, well built ranch house at base of the HISTORIC APACHE FORTRESS, Cochise Stronghold, this is a gem. With comfortable surroundings, both in and out of house, as front and back porches are more than comfy, to beds that are sleepable, in a well appointed ranch home. Jan kindly helps out with any requests providing fully stocked information re area outings. For a Cochise Apache afficionado, and his legendary Stronghold 3 miles by car, and the other Apache staple, Chiracauhua National Monument 45 minutes, each amazingly unique in stature and topography (your camera a must), with startlingly inviting Bisbee and Tombstone within an hour or so, as well as Mt Graham observatory and soothing mineral hot springs at Safford, a real treat. Mornings see hundreds of happy little birds springing about in joy. Unforgettable time. important to bring water for trip to the Stronghold, as no water at the oasis like campground, all in all a most memorable get-a-way, steeped in history and family heirlooms..thanks Jan, a priceless experience. Car is a must. Laundry nearby, off site.
Was better than we expected, and we knew it looked good from the reviews! Is was so perfect for what we were looking for. Very comfortable. Jan is a gem, her dad build the home in the late 60's early 70's. There is a lot of heart evident there. I would take it any day over a plush upscale hotel. Awesome hiking in the Cohese Stronghold. This will go down as one of the best places I have been!
We were so glad to find this place near Cochise Stronghold, one of the prettiest parts of AZ. The ranch house is simple but cozy and Jan is a wonderful hostess, who is gracious and detail-oriented without being obtrusive in the least. (Her house is a little ways up the driveway, but neither house is in view of the other and you have total privacy). The pictures don't fully capture the warm feel of the house, though they are very accurate as to furnishings and layout. It's very neat and clean and cotton sheets and bedding were all very comfortable. Direct TV is your only link to the outside world. Our cells (ATT) did not work in the area, and the little Sunsites library with excellent wifi and friendly staff is a 6 mi trek, much of it over (well maintained) dirt roads. But part of the charm of the ranch is that it's preserving a different era, when such things didn't figure into our lives. If you plan to cook a lot as we did (and you'd better, as there are very few restaurants anywhere nearby), the kitchen has most basic necessities but not a lot of working space, and we could have used a big pot/Dutch oven to make soup. You can hike right into the Nat'l Forest out the back gate behind the barn, but there isn't an actual hiking trail (some cow paths) and it's some distance to the Stronghold. The yard was fully fenced both front and back and we saw tons of deer at all times of day and heard yipping coyotes at night. A really really special place, with a deep sense of "home" about it. Thanks, Jan.
If you like watching birds and other wildlife, hiking, spectacular unobstructed views and peaceful accomodations; you'll love Deer Oaks Ranch. Walk out the back yard and hike to your hearts content in the Coronado National Forest,. Close by is the Cochise Stronghold and Chiricahua National Monument. It's only a short drive to such renowned wildlife viewing areas as White Water Draw, Patagonia Lake and all of the canyons in the Huachuca Mountains. We spent a month at Deer Oaks Ranch and saw over 100 species of birds. We even added 7 to our life list. The ranch house was quaint but well furnished and equiped for the two of us. It was absolutely perfect for our nature get-away. Jan (our host) was extremely cordial, knowledgeable and helpful. If you don't mind a mile or two of dirt roads, you'll love this place.

We have never been to this area before. Not many people know how wonderful Cochise County is. It's higher in elevation and therefore cooler than Tucson and definitely cooler than Phoenix.
We flew in from the East Coast into Tucson and rented a car. The property is really tucked up into the Mountain. It's is very picturesque. So very quiet here. Lots of beautiful desert landscaping. We hiked up into the Stronghold. It was breath-taking. One of our favorite places was the Amerind Foundation Museum. We are both American Indian/Wild West history buffs.
Also went to a vineyard in Willcox. That was an enjoyable day.
We loved coming back to the ranch after a day out touring the area. The home is very cozy. We also did lots of Rock hunting.
We got to tour Jan's art studio and purchased a little something to take back with us. The down town is small but had everything we needed. - gas and groceries. I highly suggest vacationing here. We hope to make it back soon.
