If you are looking for a standard, uninteresting villa and pool rental, then stop reading now! If you like stunning close sea views, abundant wildlife including many birds, wild coastal forest, tropical gardens, sunset and moonset directly in front of your studio, beautiful beaches to either side of the property, peace and quiet, discreet but helpful hosts, homemade ice creams and many other personal touches presented with care and attention, then come and stay with us and enter another world!
The Treehouse Garden Studio is the ground floor of the Treehouse. There is a separate studio called the Treetop Apartment on the top floor but each studio is totally independent of the other, well insulated against noise and completely private with separate entrances.
The Treehouse Garden Studio is set at the top of terraced tropical gardens offering wonderful views of the Caribbean sea with its spectacular sunsets and moon sets and frequent rainbows. Many guesthouses in this area do not have direct views of the sunset and moon set and few are as close to the sea as the Treehouse. Our position is something really special. Even local people are amazed when they see our view! Bordering the tropical garden is the wild coastal forest with its multitude of birds and other wildlife and from the Treehouse Studio balcony you can see pelicans skimming the waters below and fishermen fishing from their boats.
The terraced garden in front of the studio is home to a variety of different sculptures and many fixtures and fittings in the studio have been created using wood from the garden or beaches or other salvaged materials.
The space consists of an open plan living and sleeping area including bed and kitchen. There is a separate indoor bathroom with a shower and WC and a balcony with chairs and table overlooking the terraced garden and the sea. If you leave the large triple doors to the studio open at night - which all of our guests do as it is very safe here - then it is like sleeping outside in the garden. An elevated wooden walkway leads from the balcony down across the terraced garden to the private sun deck with its sun loungers, umbrella, table and chairs. Below the sundeck is a private outdoor shower surrounded by tropical plants. There is an outdoor barbecue with sea views and a private garden entrance from the car parking space.
Pablo and I are committed environmentalists and our passion for nature drives everything we do. Unlike other guest houses we never use pesticides or insecticides but work with natural pest solutions. A network of 15 fishpools provide an environmental solution to prevent mosquitoes breeding as the fish eat any mosquito larvae and therefore drastically reduce the mosquito population - this is in direct contrast to the common local practice of fogging for mosquitos with a spray made of neurotoxins and which is clearly toxic to people and wildlife alike.
We live totally off-grid which means we harvest our own rainwater and produce our own energy. The rainwater is collected in water butts and double filtered before use in the house. It is cleaner than bottled water (which is polluted by its own plastic bottles) and tap water. Our power is produced by solar panels placed on the roof of our own house at the top of the plot.
We deliberately do not have a swimming pool. The dangers of swimming in chlorine are now well recognised, especially for anyone with allergies, skin problems or asthma, but it is obvious that swimming in chemicals cannot be good for anyone. Salt water pools are not a solution since they simply use salt to generate chlorine and the end result is the same. With two beautiful beaches either side of our house you can swim in a totally natural, chemical free environment whenever you want and enjoy the beauty of the undersea world with its corals, fish and other amazing wildlife. One beach is a secluded cove, 10-15 minutes walk away, usually deserted with excellent snorkelling and the other beach is 10 minutes by car (or you can kayak from Marigot Bay or swim round from the secluded cove) and is a wide sandy beach perfect for swimming and enjoying the waves. There is a small bar on this beach selling drinks and fruit and the local owner is happy to make a barbecue for our guests on the beach.
We have planted our garden to encourage birds and other wildlife onto our plot and we have left two thirds of our large property wild as a conservation area. We are also planting many native plants such as orchids and air plants in our plot which have been rescued from development areas in order to protect them from destruction.
We love using driftwood, corals, shells and other items collected from the beaches around the house. The shower curtain in the studio is made from hand made fishing nets given to us by the fishermen on the beach below. Our curtain poles are made from driftwood and our curtains are made from antique 100 year old French linen sheets. We make our own glasses by cutting old wine and rum bottles and we are now making bed and furnishing covers from vintage coffee, potato and olive sacks.
We have inherited a commercial ice cream maker and as Pablo loves ice cream we always have a selection of homemade ice creams based on local fruits and nuts in season which we invite guests to share if they wish. We just ask a small fee to cover ingredient costs and work on an honesty box principle where you settle for what you have consumed when you leave. They have proved very popular!
We have considerable respect for our guests privacy and not only do we give you your own "space" when you are staying here but we do all our cleaning and maintenance work ourselves so you will not be disturbed by staff in the studio or gardens.
We have a family of three black labradors who live with us and who love visitors as well as a family of four goats who keep the grass down along the roadside - so much nicer than using a strimmer!
We work with two local Saint Lucians and we have designed with them a series of land and sea tours which are not on any tourist "programme". These are focused on local experiences and off the beaten track adventures. We can also arrange for you to have a barbecue on the beach below the house and spend the day there swimming, kayaking on the river and lagoon or playing dominoes with the local fishermen!
We can arrange for a local masseuse to come to the house on request and we can give you a voucher for the local watersports shop in Marigot Bay for a special week's deal where you can use any of their equipment for a very reasonable price - including paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling equipment and hobicats.
We have written a detailed information sheet which we send out to our guests once they have booked with us with recommendations on where to go and what to do as well as a description of tours which can be designed with local partners. We can also assist you with car rental with a reliable local family-owned company and taxi collection from the airport by Anthony, our amazing tour guide.
Also available for hire is our spare car, a small 4x4 Suzuki Jimny which is ideal for the road conditions here. Let us know if you want more details and as it is very popular with guests then you are advised to book it early!
