Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cabin in Johnsburg - Farmstand Guest House

Adirondack getaway offers fine details and spectacular views

Surrounded by meadows and gardens, located on forty gorgeous acres of land, the Farmstand Guest House offers privacy, comfort, warmth and country décor. Unique and comfortable, close to the Hudson River and pristine nearby 13th Lake as well as North Creek for dining and shopping, the Guest House is graced with Asian artwork, warm woodworking touches and beautiful decorations.

Starting out as a small barn, this structure evolved into an adorable cottage just steps away from an amazing vegetable garden. The kitchen has a bank of windows soaking in the south facing views of Gore Mountain, a treasured collection of copper pots and pans and an antique milkshake machine. There are reused antique beams, leaded glass reproduction windows from a wrecking yard, a rebuilt Vermont Castings woodstove, art work and Asian artifacts shipped to us when my parents recently downsized. Somehow, it all came together -- the Farmstand seems to have an instantaneous lore, an essential characteristic of camp life. Upstairs is a loft bedroom with queen bed; downstairs is a twin bed off an alcove; and a sofa to snooze on.

Also located on our beautiful 40 acre property are these additional unique rentals:

Glamp Bernice - Homeaway listing 4227751

Glamp Richard - Homeaway listing 3953014

Glamp Suzanne - Homeaway listing 4005409

Glamp Thomas - Homeaway listing 4227739

Authentic Bird Camp - Homeaway listing 346347

At dusk, we get the bonfire going so guests can relax in hand-built Adirondack chairs to watch the fire and the stars. There is no “light pollution” so it is an amazing experience to see thousands of stars, night clouds, moonscapes.

We have a flock of free ranging chickens that are very sweet and enjoy handouts of leftover salad, bread and such. They can be picked up easily and are very friendly. Also there are eight shy sweet ducks that waddle around the property; the ducks greatly enjoy it when there is fresh water run into their little swimming pool they are so joyous when they’re in water. The ducks are sweet but shy away from people (oh no! humans!). Unlike the chickens that wander all day and come back together only to sleep, the ducks are co-dependent and stick together all the time; if one duck is separated, they all quack until they get back together. So yes, country life can be noisy with the chickens cackling and the ducks quacking!

We have a gentle old Pony (aptly named PonyBoy) who wanders around the property. He sleeps a lot, flat out in a bed of straw by the chicken coop, or in the grass by the driveway. He also likes to stand right next to our kitchen door outside the window so he can hear the sound of our family and know what’s going on. He likes to bang the screen door open with his nose, or stick his head through the dog door. Sometimes it’s cute; other times it’s just annoying so we shoo him away with a kitchen towel. PonyBoy enjoys carrots, apples, fruit and such; best to toss the food on the ground instead of trying to feed him since he can’t tell the difference between your fingers and a carrot.

And of course there is Sammy Dog, a lab/shepherd mix, who bounds around the property, visiting all our guests, laying down on the porch and steps waiting for people to come home. Be careful coming down the driveway because he sometimes leaps unexpectedly in front of cars all goofy and happy. He can come in and even sleep over if you want (just send us a text message so we know where he is).

Visting dogs are welcome, but unfortunately they must stay on leash to protect our free ranging chickens and ducks. .

If you need a babysitter or someone to take care of your dog while you're rafting or out to dinner, we have teenagers at your disposal.

The lake is three miles down the winding road …13th Lake it is called and it is just beautiful. Totally natural and quiet with no sign of civilization on its shores. The Hudson River is at the bottom of our mountain; clear beautiful water; you go tubing or rafting with the various rafting companies located right nearby.

The town of North Creek is five miles away off the main Route 28 road but it’s easy to miss so look for the 3 or 4 signs that mark the entrance to “town”. North Creek is a scenic little town with some great restaurants, a grocery store, liquor store, some shopping places and a scenic train called the Saratoga/North Creek Railroad which takes folks in antique train cars along the Hudson River.

Gore Mountain Ski Center is off Route 28 in North Creek. Frequently they run the gondola so for about $18 a person, you can take the gondola to the top of the mountain …. Incredible views, beautiful fresh air, a lovely experience. All kinds of hiking at Gore Mountain.

Another great experience is nearby Garnet Hill Lodge, an historic lodge offering lunches and dinners … beautiful property, amazing views, great food. It’s located right up the road in North River. They rent mountain bikes and have all kinds of walking trails.

North River is such a beautiful, wonderful place! Picturesque, romantic, Adirondacks at its best ... People are always amazed at how beautiful our family property is ... I am very blessed to own this place, and enjoy sharing it with others.

So .... Enjoy amazing mountain day views and glorious stargazing by night ... this might be the most special vacation you’ve ever had! Quiet and tranquil … safely and privately located at the edge of our Hobby Farm where you can enjoy a beautiful tent, ducks and chickens, a sweet lab dog and a gentle pony.. And, as said before, If you're looking for additional space or if this property is booked, we have glamping tents and Bird Camp on the property as well ...

About Leslie Clement

Through lucky circumstances and financial help from my family, I own a precious 40 acres atop the Adirondack Mountains, which includes a small cluster of buildings including my great-grandparents’ century-old camp which is on the National Register of Historic Homes. I have the honor to have vacationing guests from all over the world who come and leave with generous notes of thanks for having had the opportunity to live as I do with my children now, and as my grandparents and great-parents once did here. We treasure our farm-like setting reminiscent of an 1800’s farm with pleasant meadows, beautiful mountain views and brilliant star-filled nights, and I am grateful to my family for helping us preserve this special place.

The property has been in my family since 1910 when my great-grandparents used to make the long trip up from New York City every summer to the Adirondacks where they had a small authentic “camp”. Life was leisurely and visitors were treasured … which is just like our lifestyle today! I moved to the “camps” several years ago fulltime and returned to my roots as a carpenter, restoring the original camp and building a guest cottage, a barn and a chicken coop. We now rent out the “camp” which still retains many original details and decorations from 1910 as well as our new guest house. Beyond bringing in much needed revenue today, the rental income is a means for my daughters, and future generations, to pay the taxes and upkeep so that the camps continue to stay in the family.

Why Leslie Clement chose Adirondacks

The Adirondack Mountains are a spectacular range in upstate New York that showcases the breathtaking beauty of nature. There is a beautiful lake three miles down the winding road. It is completely natural and quiet with no sign of civilization on its shores.

Our guests enjoy spectacular views and acres of land that consists of pristine woods, meadows, vistas, and a spring-fed pond. The Hudson River is just down the hill, and the town of North Creek is five miles away. There is a historic cemetery next door, and Gore Mountain Ski Center and Garnet Hill are only a few miles away. Albany is only an hour-and-a-half away, and guests can reach Montreal within two hours. They can even take a short four-hour road trip to New York City. The town of North Creek is five miles away off the main Route 28 road. North Creek is a scenic little town with some great restaurants, a grocery store, a liquor store, some shopping places, and a scenic train called the Saratoga/North Creek Railroad, which takes folks in antique train cars along the Hudson River. Gore Mountain Ski Center is off Route 28 in North Creek.

What makes this cabin unique

My family’s connection with the Adirondacks goes back to 1905 when my great-aunt Edie Bird --- then a teenager living in Port Washington, Long Island --- became sick with TB. At that time, the Adirondack wilderness had acquired a reputation for its health giving properties, and people were convinced that the fresh air, isolation, and plenty of rest and wholesome food would help people infected with TB. So my great-grandparents sent their daughter Edie here to North River where she “took the cure” by boarding at the nearby Cedarwood Farm where she sat outside all winter with the other boarders, bundled under quilts on the porch, and in summer walking the roads and wildflower meadows. Happily, my great-aunt Edie Bird recovered from the dreaded TB (the owners of the farm were not so lucky -- they contracted and died of TB themselves).

In 1910, my great-grandparents, Tim and Ida Bird, bought eight acres of beautiful property on “Christian Hill” (as it was once known) in North River. (I have since then bought an additional abutting 40 acres). They then built a small “shingle style” camp in the rustic Adirondack style which we call Bird Cabin --- siting the small rustic dwelling to capitalize on dramatic southward views across the Gore Mountain range and the Hudson River two miles below. They brought up by train beautiful leaded glass windows and other building materials from a demolished Guggenheim estate on Long Island. Building materials were locally acquired --- cedar shingles, stone, milled lumber nearby North Creek where intensive amounts of logging was being done. Traditionally, the women and children stayed all summer while the men traveled back and forth. Life was leisurely. Visiting, and having visitors, was an important part of life. Cooking was done with a hand pump and wood cook stove. It was a four day long trip from Port Washington, Long Island.

We are delighted to share this special property today with visiting guests from all over the world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our stay immensely in the North River Adirondack cabin. It's truly peaceful and in a beautiful area. Our cabin was clean, very comfortable, quaint and cozy -- and Leslie was a lovely host and immediately responded to any questions we had. We thoroughly enjoyed being so close to so many great hiking trails in the region. And most wonderful for us was being able to bring our two dogs to stay and hike with us -- who Leslie and her dog, Sammy, warmly welcomed. We would absolutely stay at one of Leslie's cabins again as it was full of charm and had all the necessary amenities we were looking for. Thank you Leslie!

Amazing place. Cozy, comfortable and relaxing.

Amazing property and cabin. Leslie and her family are amazing hosts. This place borders on perfection. The pictures are accurate, the place was clean, free of mildew or other unpleasant smells, and I would recommend this place to everybody if I weren't trying to keep this secret to myself.

Pro Tip: Bring Ice Cream and Milk for the old fashioned milkshake machine.

Lovely cozy cabin

Very cozy cabin on a nice property! Very close to Gore for skiing. The wood stove was great and the full size kitchen was a plus for cooking our own meals. Owner is super nice and her daughters walked our dog while we were skiing. Would definitely rent again.

A gem of a place!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I chose this rental because of the reviews and the photos of the property. What a jewel we found! When we arrived, Leslie's dog, Sammy greeted us first, and Leslie gave us the choice of a fire in the fire pit or inside our cozy Farmstand living room. The grounds are lovely, our cabin was delightful and clean with Leslie's special touches throughout the place. We relaxed, walked the property, hiked, and enjoyed the animals, a huge part of our joyful weekend. And the best of all was Leslie's hospitality! We'll see you in the spring with our friends! The Adirondack Museum was great and for good food: Izzy's for a breakfast burrito and BarVino for dinner.

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful area that could please anyone- whether you're travelling with children or pets, Leslie is very accomodating and the cabin is very roomy. We brought our dog who loved playing on the land with Sammy the Labrador and the farm pony. Both are very well-socialized and great with people and other animals. We enjoyed exploring the surrounding area by day and sitting by the fire pit or wood burning stove by night. This place is full of charm and goes beyond expectations. Much more beautiful, roomy, and accommodating than a hotel that provides half the features for the same price.

Cozy Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at The Farmstand! It was just big enough for our family of four, and we loved the character and charm of the place. We stayed for 3 nights during a ski trip to nearby Gore Mountain (awesome ski mountain!). Leslie was a terrific hostess, and we looked forward to our daily visits with Sammy (Leslie's very friendly dog). We enjoyed our daily breakfasts in the kitchen, and the wood stove was fired up for us every day when we returned from the ski mountain to start our relaxing evenings. We had a great time, and plan to rent The Farmstand again the next time we visit Gore Mountain. Chris M. Cranberry Township, PA
