Built in the 1850's as a hotel and Keweenaw County's first jail, the 'Big House' (and it is truly big at 3700 sq ft), has been carefully renovated into a single family residence that sleeps 10. First floor consists of a large sun porch with lake views, two ample living rooms filled with oversize sofas and chairs for lounging. An enormous gourmet kitchen comes complete with Viking stove, granite countertops, quality cooking equipments, spices, and a table with seating for ten. The large center island magnetically draws laughter and conversation around food preparation. The substantial mudroom completes the first floor with cubbies, hooks and plenty of space to put adventure gear away after a day outdoors. The second floor houses three bedroom suites -- one with two conjoining rooms with king and queen beds plus bath, one with a queen and bath, and one with a full and bath. The third floor suite has a queen and bath and the first jail in Keweenaw County! Hardy heart pine doors with hand wrought iron decorates the holding cell once used for boisterous miners and seafarers back in the copper boom. The Big House is steps away from miles of sandy Lake Superior beach, top notch dining at the Fitz, Eagle River Falls, Eagle River Museum, and the Keweenaw County Courthouse.

About Virginia Cole
Bud and Jan Cole, a brother/sister team, hail from six generations of UP natives and lovers. Both share a passion for the history, pristine natural beauty and people of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Together, they work to restore historic properties to their full potential. Incorporating old world charm with contemporary sensibility, their projects showcase a clean, eclectic style. Their appreciation of the area translates into a willingness to guide you to splendid trails and back country, historic venues full of fact and legend, and a easy place to enjoy a meal with friends and family at the end of the day.
Virginia Cole purchased this House in 2013
Why Virginia Cole chose Eagle River
The Cole family spent summer vacations on Eagle River's shores. Fond memories birthed a desire to invest in the community. The Big House offered an opportunity to preserve part of Eagle River's history while providing a venue for new families and friends to create special memories.
What makes this House unique
The Big House is absolutely unique in its history and presentation. Built in the 1850's by the Long brothers along with adjacent pub, the structure was originally a rough hewn log hotel for miners and seafarers run by the Coles great, great aunt and uncle. The house shares East Main Street Eagle River with six other early structures, making it one of the only intact venues from the 1860's copper boom. The partners wanted to preserve the building's character and continue its legacy as a gathering place for family and friends.

Historic, beautifully maintained home in convenient Eagle Harbor. We were visiting for a ski trip to Mt Bohemia and the location was perfect. ~20 min from the slopes. Kitchen was top notch. Property owner Jan was a pleasure to deal with and was highly responsive. Thanks so much!
Super kitchen. Great home for entertaining. Comfortable beds.
It's simply a great property!!
The Big House is a wonderful destination for family and friends to enjoy a stay at while in the Keweenaw, besides all the room for the group to spread out also included are the amenities that truly exceed any expectations for a family spot in the UP!
From the changing room with a multitude of hooks and bins to store outdoor gear in to the kitchen equipped with everything a cook would need to prepare a gourmet meal to the burr grinder to allow a barista to make the finest caffeine charged beverage to start the day, it is all here.
Of course the item that truly makes a vacation restful is the bedding, and the bedding here rivals that of the finest hotels.
What really tops off the Big House is the host, Jan is attentive and available for her guests.
We love staying at the big house and exploring the keewenaw peninsula.
The big house is delightful. We'll maintained and furnished, works great for multiple couples or large family gathering. Highly recommend!
Great place to enjoy a few days
There were 7 adults visiting Eagle River and chose this house. It worked out great for us. The house was extremely clean and well kept. We all agreed that we would certainly come back in the future if we come back to the area.
Lovely! Clean, roomy, comfortable, fully equipped.
Excellent place to stay for our family. Each family had their own bedroom, comfy king sized beds were very comfortable, everything we needed was in the kitchen, everything was clean and tidy. We enjoyed especially touring the Sand Hills Lighthouse at Five Mile Point and dining at Harbor Haus. We also enjoyed poking around in the local artists' craft shops, especially Studio 41. Lunch at The Pines was good and fairly priced. We loved being by Lake Superior and photographing at the beaches and amongst the trees which were just starting to display their fall colors. We strongly recommend a trip to this area.
Miles of pristine Lake Superior beach, local museums full of the area's copper mining history, thick fragrant woods, waterfalls and wilderness for hiking, biking and exploring. After a day of adventure, enjoy fabulous libations and dining at a variety of local restaurants.
