Caleta Tortuga, 'Turtle Cove' in Spanish, is located on a scenic hillside overlooking Ensenada Honda. Copy and paste this Google Maps link into your favorite web browser to see exactly where the house is located:
It is situated in such a way that the trade winds provide excellent ventilation year-round. For times when nature’s cooling isn’t quite enough, there are two air conditioners to help keep you comfortable. With two bedrooms and a futon in the living room, there is ample room for up to six. Two full bathrooms mean no waiting for the facilities. The front deck is spacious, welcoming and an ideal place to relax and plan your day. It faces south-southeast so watching a beautiful Caribbean sunrise with a hot cup of your favorite beverage is easy and convenient. The tiled kitchen features a full-size stove and refrigerator, blender, microwave oven and a complete assortment of cookware, utensils and accessories. For those seeking a golden glow, the wrap-around deck allows for ideal sun light no matter what the time of day. The Kenmore gas grill is there if you want to enjoy a juicy burger or sizzling steak. When you are ready to go exploring, you will find that Caleta Tortuga is just about perfectly located and only minutes away from anywhere on the island. Other amenities include ceiling/pedastal fans throughout, linens, towels, 32-inch flat screen TV and DVD player.
For those unfamiliar with the island, Culebra is located about midway between mainland Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, USVI. With a full-time population of only 1,800 people, it is quiet, peaceful and a haven for those who seek to unwind and feel stress melt away. In spite of our diminutive size and population, however, we are home to several stellar restaurants. Our favorite is easily Zacos Tacos, but don’t let the name fool you. There is far more on the menu than just tacos, although we have never found a reason to try anything else. Other noteworthy restaurants include Susie’s, El Eden and the Dinghy Dock, just to name a few. You will also find not only the world famous Flamenco Beach, but many less-traveled and equally breath-taking beaches, all waiting to be discovered by you. But you don’t have to take our word for it, because Travel and Leisure magazine named Culebra as its top island in the Caribbean for 2013!
When on Culebra, make sure you find the time to visit Isla Culebrita, the small island off the eastern shore. It is home to Tortuga Beach, the inspiration for the name of this home. Also on Culebrita are some fabulous tidal pools fed by waves coming in from the open ocean. The power and fury of this display is truly inspiring. We love to scramble across the rocks, find a good vantage point and just lose ourselves in the majesty. It is almost a spiritual awakening.
One final note: As has been mentioned in some reviews below, the house is in a residential neighborhood and your day just might begin with the roosters crowing. You might also see or hear evidence of dogs, lizards, iguanas and of course, lots of birds. After having vacationed on several different Caribbean islands, we have come to expect such “local color” and to us it is a welcome reminder that we are not in Kansas anymore. We mention these facts because we genuinely want you to love your stay on Culebra so that you will return again and again, regardless of where you choose to lay your head.
We are the brand new owners of Caleta Tortuga and are very excited to be a part of this wonderful island. As a professional couple with plans to retire to Culebra within the next few years, we are offering our future retirement home to you while we count the days until we can live there full time.
Erik and Nancy purchased this house in 2013
After vacationing in the Caribbean on and off for several years and visiting many lovely places, we discovered and fell in love with Culebra in 2012. It is small, quiet and has everything we want and need. If you are interested in nightlife and wild times, Culebra might not be right for you. If you value seclusion and sparse population along with beautiful beaches and friendly locals, Culebra has exactly what you need.
This is a modest home with a beautiful view, lots of room to spread out and centrally located so that the island is at your fingertips. Yes, there are far larger, nicer, and more prestigious homes on the island, and if you want the ultimate luxury hideaway, click the back button and keep on looking. This house is all about charm, convenience and affordability.
We stayed at Caleta Tortuga during the last week of January and the first week of February this year. We had been to Culebra once before and stayed at a guest house, so this was the first time to rent a house on the island. Caleta Tortuga was ideal. The location essentially in the middle of the island made getting everywhere quick and easy. The house itself was comfortable with a well stocked kitchen for those who might want to cook. The front porch has a beautiful view and we spent a lot of time there reading or enjoying a beverage. The owners generously provided chairs and towels for the beach as well as snorkeling equipment that we used almost daily. The owners were responsive to all emails and they have a contact on the island that was extremely helpful. We can't say enough good things about Caleta Tortuga and hope to return in the future.
This home was exactly what we were looking for in a rental. This was our second visit to the island and we stayed at Caleta Tortuga with our two teenagers. The front porch and view of the harbor was the perfect spot for morning coffee and nighttime cocktails. The beds were comfortable and the showers roomy with excellent water pressure and the house was very clean. The outdoor shower area was ideal for after beach excursions to wash off the sand. The clothesline out back was well thought out for drying towels and swimsuits overnight. The neighbors were kind and welcoming. This is a home in a neighborhood and we felt safe and welcomed throughout our stay. We highly recommend this place and hope to have the opportunity to visit Culebra again and would definitely stay at Caleta Tortuga!!! Restaurants: the new Krusty Krab was delicious and our favorite place next to Dinghy Dock.
Four adults, twelve night stay. We had an amazing stay at Nancy and Erik's house. The house is spacious and very well maintained. The house was squeaky clean upon arrival and all cleaning products were available to maintain the cleanliness throughout your stay. All the amenities listed in the description are a plus to the stay. We made several home cooked meals so the pots and pans, knives etc. are a major plus! The location is absolutely perfect with a beautiful view. The front porch was our go to hangout spot since the view is so refreshing and peaceful. The care takers were very friendly and helpful. They picked us up from the ferry upon arrival, took us to the ATV rental and back to the ferry come time to leave. The beaches were all stunning. The very famous flamenco beach is our favorite since the kiosk were available to eat/drink. We enjoyed our hikes to the more private beaches... Zoni beach, Carlos Rosario. We had our own snorkel gear but there were extras at the house. The beach chairs at the house were of great use!! The food is delicious and every restaurant we went to left us with a full an very happy stomach! Firstly, don't underestimate the food truck so conveniently located 1 min walk around the corner from the house. The fish sandwich was outstanding! Dinghy dock is my favorite, the view, the food and the all around vibe. Again, their grouper is to die for. Great filet mignon and nachos too. We also ate at Zacos Tacos which has the best bar music and drinks. Mamacitas was another restaurant we went to for dinner which was also good. Susie's was delicious and more fancy feel. To end this review .........I WANT TO COME BACK TO CULEBRA!!
We really enjoyed our stay at Caleta Tortuga. Everything you need is provided and the caretakers are a quick text/call away if you need anything. The Island is small and the house is situated right in the middle of the attractions. The main components I look for in a vacation rental were all found in Caleta Tortuga. Clean, (very) safe location, open floor plan (kitchen, dining room, and living room all open to each other), air conditioning (in the rooms but that's all you need), a patio with a nice view, and walking distance to some restaurants.
I would recommend getting a golf cart or rental car. Not all of the beaches are golf cart friendly but several of them are and it's a fun experience. I would also advise to bring mosquito repellant they defiantly come out at dusk.
Overall great trip to Culebra! We had so much fun, our favorite beach was Honeymoon Beach which you have to kayak to. Suzie's was a nice little restaurant within walking distance, Maria was our excellent server! If you are willing to spend a little extra money fly instead of taking the ferry. It's a much nicer experience. We flew to the Island and took the ferry from the Island.
We stayed in Caleta Tortuga for a week in mid-July. It was located less than five minutes away from the airport and everything was ready for our arrival. Our favorite beach was located a short golf cart ride away.
The house was perfect for all of our needs. The Wi-Fi and air conditioning worked without problems, the kitchen had all the supplies we needed for cooking, and there were beach towels, chairs, and snorkeling gear for us to use.
During our first night, we found a leak in one of the bathrooms. The next morning, we called Dick and he came over and fixed it immediately. He was very helpful in answering our questions.
One thing to be careful about is the number of bugs. All of us would wake up in the morning covered in dozens bug bites. We definitely recommend keeping the windows closed at night and using lots of bug spray.
We definitely recommend Caleta Tortuga. It's clean, quiet, and was close to grocery stores, beaches, and restaurants.
Erik and Nancy have a wonderful place! The house is in pristine condition, with all of the amenities necessary for a pleasant and easy stay on the island. The view from the porch is fantastic and provides a relaxing spot when you you have torn yourself away from Culebra's beaches and waters.
Dick, the very personable caretaker for the property, lives across the street and is available to answer any questions.
This was our fourth visit to Culebra and Caleta Tortuga was far and beyond the best lodging we have rented. We highly recommend it!
As for the roosters and dogs mentioned by other reviewers: chickens and roosters run wild everywhere on Culebra - including all of the beaches. The crowing is an inescapable (and I think charming) part of the local color. Dogs are ubiquitous as well. A big part of Culebra's charm is its traditional Puerto Rican character. Be prepared to enjoy these rough edges that, hopefully, won't be sanded away by rapidly growing tourism
