Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cabin in Camp Meeker - For Play Cabin

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This is a true getaway. We searched the enitre area of the Russian River before we settled on this property. Camp Meeker is unique with its logging history, post San Francisco earth quake. After it was done as a logging camp it was developed as a vacation community. Families have owned properties for multi generations and some became full time residents. It is fun to hear the family histories and tales of days gone by.It is central to the RussianRiver, ocean, Redwoods, wine country, and all of the entertainment, activities, and open countryside of West Sonoma county. The cabin is a great place to leave your daily life behind and truly disconnect. We get some cell coverage, but its more a place to reconnect to each other. We enjoy sharing our space with friends and family, but both agree, it is best with just us two. We chose to not put TV, and all of the other distractions of daily life so that it would feel like time away from our daily life. We have shared some of our best meals in our backyard Redwood grove. It's a place to come home to after a day of enjoying what you love to do outside, enjoy a GREAT SHOWER and a fantastic night of rest. The entertainment available in West Sonoma county is endless, via festivals, wineries, and farm trails. Where there is wine there is great food. We are pet friendly to responsible and well trained owners of pets. We do not have complete fencing, so your dog can not be left unattended out of doors and must have good indoor manners. We love the children we raised as I am sure you love yours, but our cabin is made as a true getaway..

About The Owner

My husband and I have been together 30 years. We have always understood the importance of getting away on our own to reconnect. When our last child was out of the house, we set out to find this place. We spent two years looking and two years creating. We did all of the work and enjoyed our time there all the while. Our dream is to own a Bed & Breakfast one day. We chose this area because of all of the activities, entertainment, and the weather. The cabin does not get the coastal fog or the winds that come off of the river. There is sun year round. The Friday night market in Occidental, Union Hotel Bar & Restaurant, Barley & Hops Pub, & Howards Cafe have enough to offer in a weekend that you never have to leave Occidental if you don't want to. We love coming to an area that has so much Calif. history and where generations of families have owned vacation properties. We hope you will come and enjoy the cabin for all of the reasons we do and find some of your own, and then come again.

Why The Owner chose Sonoma County

We chose this area because it is within a close distance of our home for a weekend getaway. The drive in is scenic because of all of the open lands. We were looking to be within minutes of the Ocean, but did not want the coastal fog. We are within 15 min. of warmer weather or cooler weather. It is a unique climate location. The towering Redwoods have the ability to grab your attention and distract you from your daily thinking. The cabin is located off a beautiful stretch of Hwy. and nestled in a quiet vacation community where people come to rest.

What makes this cabin unique

We asked our friends and family to help give us a name for the cabin that best described the feeling for them while there. For Play was the name we chose. You will want to leave the woes of daily life and responsibilities behind and play, whatever that means for you. It's a great place to watch the sun move through the trees first thing in the morning, or take a walk to a nearby scenic lookout. We have a picnic pack that we take to the ocean parks, river, or any spot we may come upon. There are many nearby hiking trails that are short in distance or can take you all the way to te ocean. It is a great biking destination for all skill levels and or the motorized cyclist. We like to participate in local community events as much as possible, like the local volunteer Fire Dept. pancake breakfast & BBQ. We do enjoy the community spirit. We enjoy sharing information on local restaurants and activities with guests. We have a window of opportunity that holds local discounts that we are able to come by for our guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My weekend starts on a Thursday afternoon when I arrange a massage at the cabin with Cindy Fuchs; at www.mellowmates.com or www.mellowmommy.com, wonderful experience, my husband joins me at the Friday night Farmers Market on Main Street. We shop the market for local produce and decide on a plate of Paella, a bottle of local wine that we take back to the cabin and enjoy out back with a fire. Don't forget the ice cream from the Farmers Market, it was a great treat that we finished on Saturday night as we grilled out back and enjoyed our local produce. Sunday morning belongs to Howards for breakfast. One last walk with the dog a quick check of the cabin and the weekend is done. We look forward to the return trip already.

Repeat guests keep coming back!

We had our third Thanksgiving at the For Play cabin. The property is consistently well-kept, clean, and stocked perfectly to accommodate a cozy get away.

The Perfect Place!

  • 5 of 5

This little cabin was the perfect place to get away and spend quality time with family or friends. The cabin itself was clean, warm and inviting and a perfect place to curl in with a good book in front of the fire!

We attended a wedding in Occidental and everyone in town went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed.

I would highly recommend this place as a get away whether you want time alone, exploring, or wine tasting, we loved it!

A perfect way to unplug

  • 5 of 5

The home was clean, tidy, welcoming, comfortable and cute. The first thing I noticed upon exiting the car was how quiet it was. Soooo peaceful. The home offers plenty of space to relax and enjoy the views. The back gathering area was a nice treat too. The bed was comfortable and the shower was divine. My only complaint is that it is very weird to have to take your own garbage with you when you leave. Luckily for me, our garbage consisted of wine bottles and not much else, but for anyone who wanted to cook and "live" while there, I would not be happy with having to pack my stuff out of there. Especially when you have to pay a cleaning fee too. But I'd love to return and explore the wine tasting of the area. It was a very cute (and VERY unplugged -- don't expect service anywhere) location. Owner was easy to work with and provide all the necessary details to get our trip started.

A TRUE Gem !!

  • 5 of 5

As nice as this looks in on-line photos, pictures do not begin to give you the feel for how lovely this place is. Yes, the rooms and exterior are as pictured, but what doesn't show in photos is the quality of all the remodeling and construction: everything is fresh and new-feeling, with excellent lighting, plenty of new outlets for everyone's phones, iPads, hair tools, etc. The kitchen is so cheery with its access to the lovely back patio area. The beds are both comfortable and linens lovely . The beautiful walk-in shower is a treat, too. The area is a perfect home base for touring all of Sonoma county, with easy access to both the Coast AND the area's many vineyards while roosting in a redwood forest near the charming village of Occidental. The hosts have provided all that is needed for a comfortable stay. We would highly recommend this spot, and hope to return there ourselves sometime soon.

Peace and tranquility in the redwoods

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days at For Play Cabin and couldn't have asked for a better vacation. The location is ideal with so much to do from the beach to the redwood forests to the vast selection of vineyards. The cabin was wonderful to come back to at the end of the day and enjoy a nice glass of wine among the trees. The cabin itself had everything we needed to prepare our own meals and offered a cozy atmosphere at night by the stove. We were very pleased with our experience and would highly recommend this cabin. Thank you, Maureen and Brian for a great experience.

exceeded my expectations

You need to be there to feel the TLC that the cabin offers, and all of the the surroundings. I loved sitting outside with the dogs, looking up at the redwoods and smelling the pine. It's the perfect place to get away and just BE.

West Sonoma county has so much to offer in entertainment, wine tasting, biking, hiking, or just enjoying the beauty of the nearby Russian River, Bodega Bay, and all of the activities they offer. It is a place to get out and see, but come home at the end of your busy day and get away..
