Welcome to Galapagos

The Bay House is nestled in a pristine bay on the edge of Punta Estrada, the exclusive neighborhood on the stunning Galapagos island of Santa Cruz.

Home to Furio Valbonesi and his delightful dog Tornado, this charming self-catering villa is available for short term rental for families and groups of up to 8 people.

'I invite you to explore the myriad wonders of Galapagos' unique eco-system from the comfort of my home. Since first arriving on the islands in 1973, it has been my dream to create a home in this secluded corner of paradise.

Ten years ago this dream became reality and for the past few years I opened the doors to visitors from across the world. Do take a look around this website for a taste of what is in store for you should you choose Galapagos Ocean Villa as your base for visiting the islands.'

Accommodation

On the ground floor is a large open plan kitchen / dining room overlooking the whirlpool, the infinity pool and the bay. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need to cater for your group.

Next to the pool is the Swedish sauna, the BBQ area with Italian brick oven. Both outdoor and indoor showers, as well as a guest bathroom, a small gym and laundry room are available for your use.

On the first floor are two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms complete with bathtub, shower and bidet. There are two bunk beds suitable for children in the lobby that separate the bedrooms.A large terrace overlooks the bay from this floor.

Next to the main house, separated by a small garden is the Guest House with two air conditioned twin bedrooms, each with their own bathroom and shower.

As there are no cars in the neighborhood it is a safe place for children. You can listen to the mockingbirds, Darwin finches and lava gulls all day long.

Maid service will be available 6 mornings per week (excluding Sunday and National Holidays).

Location

In the exclusive Punta Estrada neighborhood, overlooking the Franklin Bay,a very short walk to the Finch Bay Hotel and the German Beach, and a 10 minutes walk to the famous attraction, ' Las Grietas', and the salt lagoonwhose path starts right behind the villa.

 Activities

Included as part of your rental is the use of the infinity swimming pool, with jacuzzi and sauna. A kayak is also available for your enjoyment. You are encouraged to bring your own equipment for snorkeling in the tranquil bay immediately in front of the house.

A stone's throw away from the villa is the famous must-see Guss Angermeyer Museum. The villa is a 5 minute walk from the famous 'German Beach' and only 10 minutes from 'Las Grietas', a water canyon with brackish crystal clear water.

In Puerto Ayora one can visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and the Galapagos National Park Van Strahlen Hall to see the giant tortoises breeding center and land iguanas. Saturday morning sees a wonderful array of local produce on display at the central market in town.

A trip up into the highlands of Santa Cruz, some 20 minutes by taxi from the town of Puerto Ayora, will allow you to see giant tortoises living in the wild, as well as explore the fascinating underground lava tunnels.

Puerto Ayora is where all day tours to the nearby islands start. With Santa Cruz being situated at the center of the archipelago, it offers most activities and excursions to other islands, as well as to the highlands where you can see the Galapagos Tortoises in their natural habitat. Of all the trips, Furio recommends a trip to the fine white sand of Tortuga Bay beach and to Garrapatero beach where you can rent kayaks and enjoy your own BBQ.

Do ask Furio, either before your visit or once you arrive, to help you with arrangements for your tours and excursions.

Home is really nice. Huge living room, kitchen, 3 floors, 3 bedrooms with bathrooms and astonishing view. There are two bedroom in separate building. Outdoor pool and jacuzzi. Your own pier. The best owner I've ever met, who will show and describe everything you need. There is very nice staff guy who cleans the house.

What a gem

  • 5 of 5

Could not fault this place. Furio was the best host ever - happy to be around, but also good at leaving us on our own. We had some great Italian cooking lessons and of course were told the best places to shop for the ingredients. And what an amazingly well equipped kitchen - I don't usually cook when on holiday but it was a pleasure to do so here. The place is in a fantastic setting, easy to get to but off the beaten track. Basing yourself on Santa Cruz is a good idea as you can do day trips from there (North Seymour and Pinzon a must) and probably only have to leave to spend a couple of nights in Isabela. I loved the Galapagos and it was made more special staying here

A wonderful and unforgettable experience

  • 5 of 5

While the trip to the Galapagos Islands was a special experience in itself, the stay in Casa de Furio made it even more unique. An excellent location - in a very peaceful bay at the shore, yet with a quick and easy access to Santa Cruz island's key attractions: within a walking distance to Las Grietas for example.

Apart from all the facilities necessary, the house has a remarkable interior - the part we liked most. The parlour is tastefully decorated with genuine Italian art - a beguiling contrast to the local fauna and flora and a clear indication of Furio's origins.

The host himself is a cheerful, good-natured and helpful person, eager to share his experience of living in the region for quite a long time. His dog, Tornado, is an example of an intelligent and a child-loving animal.

We had a wonderful time in la Casa de Furio.

Marvellous location and host!

  • 5 of 5

Thank goodness I never saw the last review (Dec 31) until now or we would have missed out on a marvellous place to stay only one week after that review! I certainly never noticed any smells of dog or mould; and hardly any mosquitos which was a pleasant surprise-since we are near the equator in a humid area.

Furio was a marvellous host -what a treat to be greeted with Italian hospitality in the midst of the Pacific-great location, great food & great company. We shall tell all our friends in Australia (and elsewhere!) about it.

Don't stay here!

  • 1 of 5

We have stayed in many high end properties in many countries, and this is the worst so far. The only thing to recommend it is the location. We were traveling as a family of 6 adults., and rented the house for a week but were gone to another island for two of the nights. Because of a serious allergy, two of our group had to move to a hotel nearby due to all the mold and mildew. (The smell was very noticable.) Although the floor and counter level surfaces were wiped every day, all other horizontal surfaces were covered with a lot of dust. There are many holes in the screens, or doors that don't hang straight, so there were as many mosquitos inside as out! The owner has a dog, which fact we didn't mind because we all like dogs, but we found that we couldn't use the living room area because the dog smell was so strong, so we even ended up eating our Christmas dinner on the picnic table outside where it was cool and windy. All of us were glad to move on to our next destination.

Owner's Response: I strongly and sadly disagree with my guests review. From the beginning I told my guests to inform me of any problem they could encounter during their stay. Unfortunately there was zero communication from them. It is true that they went to Isabela for two nights but what that they don't say is that they had programmed their trip to Isabela with a local agency well before their arrival. Regarding the serious allergy problem, they never informed me of anything. But only one girl apparently moved to a nearby hotel while her husband or boyfriend remained in the room, which looks more like a couple's problem than an allergy problem. There is absolutely no mould or mildew in any room and I doubt that the maid never cleaned the horizontal surfaces, she was trained to do it all the time. Concerning the screen holes, there are small holes due to the effect of the salt that eats the metal screen.I was about to change it but, anyway I very much doubt that those were the cause of mosquitos in the house and only the screens in the living room doors were minimally affected. The dog : it was given a bath just the day before my guests arrival, they never allowed him to enter the house at any time, they had him sleep all nights outside so I just do not understand where this supposed dog smell comes from since the dog,as I said before, was never allowed into the house. The maid was always ready to help them, they asked her to wash by hand with warm water all their laundry, tons of it and she willingly did it at a considerable effort, when she could have done it in the washing machine. I can understand that people can or can not like the house but if one read all house reviews, good or bad, nobody ever complained about any of the issues brought up from my last guests. The house or service does not change from one day to the other. Nonetheless I am very sorry they did not enjoy their stay.

THE BEST ... LOOK NO MORE!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 adults stayed 10 days at Furio's Villa and we couldn't be any happier. We wanted to find THE PERFECT getaway to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. Surely, the Galapagos was an all-time best vacation location and Furio's Bay House was THE BEST place to stay on the Islands! From the first contact, Furio was quick to respond and was invaluable, answering all of our many questions and helping us with pre-planning excursions, island transportation, airport arrival, and where to go to find reputable and trusted local shops and services. Furio knows the islands and he knows everyone. There were six of us (Me, my wife and two daughters with their significant others (ages 27-38), and we found Furio's Villa such a warm, comfortable and relaxing getaway on the island. The home is spacious, reminiscent of an old Italian Villa, furnished with Furio's family antiques and collectibles. What you experience is far nicer and richer than the pictures on the website, right down to the Sea Lions and Iguanas on his dock to greet you each morning. Complete with fresh water pool, sauna, hammocks, kayak and his friendly dog "Torranado", it was the perfect home-base for us. I can also recommend Furio's kitchen facilities. Large, spacious and well equipped so we made many meals in that helped stretch our budget. Furio is also the consummate host. One day we returned from an over-night excursion to Isabela Island to find a freshly-baked loaf of bread that he prepared for us. You could not ask for a better host. He generally left us to ourselves and was always available to help and join us when asked. We enjoyed many hours laughing and cooking with Furio in his kitchen - it was just like family. Furio also helped me plan a very special surprise birthday celebration for my wife too. So STOP LOOKING. We all agreed, the entire experience was wonderful and we would return again. This was the affordable alternative to the high-priced resorts and hotels and offered much more than expected for the do-it-yourself adventurer.

There is no other place on Earth like Furio's Casa

  • 5 of 5

If you want to experience the warmth and hospitality that Furio provides - including his culinary skills - his spacious, homely residence (as opposed to a boring, clinical hotel room), furnished with his families antiques all the way from Italy. Sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet in the house and the perfect position of the pool and boat ramp at the end of the beach like garden, where you can sit sipping your morning cup of coffee and watch the birds, sea lions and iguanas playing in their natural habitat, then Furio's Casa is the place to stay.

I can also recommend you ask Furio for some cooking lessons. You'll have lots of fun and laughs in his kitchen and take home some delicious recipes and culinary secrets.
