About John-Paul Bogart

We are professional decorators and antique dealers, with long experience in creating comfortable and elegant surroundings. It is often said that 'The devil is in the details.' La Camargo is richly furnished, and no expense was spared to create an inviting ambiance - from the choice of flatware, to the master paintings and sculptures that embellish the surroundings. Many rental apartments are conceived with an idea, on the part of their owners, that renters are careless and damage property. Every effort is made to economise. It is our conviction, however, that the guests who stay with us recognize and are drawn to beautiful surroundings. They appreciate and respect it. We have made every effort, therefore, to create an environment which is a feast for the eyes. In so doing, we hope to lift the hearts of the weary travelers who come from far away, and who honor us with their patronage. While hotels rooms the world over are so standardized as to be interchangeable, we have heard a different drummer and created an interior which is uniquely French, with all of the grand and elegant traditions for which it is famous. If you are coming to France, we presume that you are looking for an authentic experience. With that idea as our guiding principal, we have done everything in our means to provide one.

John-Paul Bogart purchased this apartment in 1994

Why John-Paul Bogart chose Madeleine

The apartment is centrally located on the Faubourg Saint Honoré, one block from the Palais de l'Elysée (the president's palace), across the street from the Bristol Hotel and the Ministry of the Interior. It is a stone's throw from the Champs Elysées and Avenue Montaigne. It is one of the safest and most elegant neighborhoods in Paris.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is sumptuously appointed, with antique furniture, fine paintings, sculpture and objects, silk lined walls and silk curtains, and a recent, plush Queen-sized bed. Modern comforts include air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, wifi, a large flat screen television, multi-zone DVD readers, over 1000 recent films, an iPod dock, etc. The apartment is not a cold, impersonal hotel room. It is cosy and extremely comfortable. A home away from home. Once outside the door of our building, however, you are in the heart of the most beautiful city in Europe, and only a short walk from most of its principal monuments, greatest restaurants, finest shopping boutiques and theaters. A comparable suite at the Bristol Hotel, just across the street, would run seven times the price we ask. The apartment is a jewel, and a great bargain. Just read our reviews. Consistent 5 star ratings. Our clients have all adored their stay with us, and many of our customers return regularly. We hope that you will become part of the ever growing 'La Camargo' family.

An Incredible Property in the Heart of Paris

  • 5 of 5

I recently returned with a friend from a ten day visit to Paris. Our visit to the City was made all the better by our stay at La Camargo, a beautiful apartment centrally located in the heart of Paris. The apartment is beautifully decorated and the owner has thoughtfully provided for everything necessary for a comfortable stay. The location is excellent, secure, and within easy walking distance to many restaurants, the Metro, shopping and the Champs Elysees, in addition to many other attractions in Paris. I would highly recommend this exquisite apartment. The owner was very gracious and available to assist in any way possible. I hope to return in the not too distant future.

Fantastic property in the heart of Paris

  • 5 of 5

This is a great apartment in the heart of Paris. Very clean, convenient with great service from the owners. One block away from the presidential palace so it is very safe. Bed is very comfortable and the furnishings are very interesting. We stayed for a week and I would return if I have the chance.

A Lovely Paris Experince

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful and very comfortable apartment. The on line photographs and positive comments about the apartment are quite accurate. Location is close (walking distance) to a number of important Paris locatIons. Additionally, Uber or taxi service is readily available on the street fronting the apartment to all the principal historical, cultural, and shopping areas In the city.

Elevator to the 6th floor apartment/Le Camargo is fairly small (holds two people and one luggage bag), but manageable and reliable.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Le Camargo--highly recommended.

I wish I could move in! Much better than a 5 star hotel experience!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I travel often and we usually stay in luxury hotels but I am beyond delighted that we booked La Camargo instead! Without a doubt, La Camargo is where I will make a reservation for our next trip to Paris.

The property is so elegantly Parisian, spacious and the location is superb. The view is fantastic as well. My husband and I loved being able to leave the apartment on foot and stroll aimlessly for hours. The 8th arrondissement is so posh and right in the heart of Paris, surrounded by the best shopping and sightseeing. The President of France is your neighbor at La Camargo! If it’s good enough for him...

My husband and I visited in early October, having just arrived from a 5 star hotel stay in Venice via a very luxurious overnight in a sleeper car on the Orient Express. We thoroughly appreciated the privacy and calm of staying at this Parisian luxury property. It was nice to be able to do laundry or enjoy coffee or a meal without having to call housekeeping, room service or visit a hotel restaurant.

If you do miss the amenities of a hotel, the five star Bristol is right across the street. We enjoyed a nightcap at the Bristol after strolling back from a leisurely dinner one evening. You can elect to book a spa treatment and perhaps have use of their spa facilities, which include a rooftop pool (if you book an appointment). The Bristol concierge even helped me to identify some local jazz venues as well (admittedly, he probably thought I was a hotel guest).

The property owners of La Camargo are very friendly and make themselves promptly available if you need anything. Staying at La Camargo truly enhanced our experience in Paris. The price of a hotel room so well located and elegantly designed would far exceed the price of this stay. In fact a better comparison would be a large hotel suite like the Bristol’s Suite Prestige Elysée which costs well over $5000 or $6000 per night as La Camargo is so well appointed, quite spacious and has a charming view. I felt very fortunate to discover this gem! I can’t wait to go back! In fact, I must stop my review here. I’m going to search availability for the spring. À bientôt!

Elegant - but needs attention to detail

  • 3 of 5

We are a retired couple; for the past decade we have traveled to Europe about four times a year usually staying for three to four weeks at the time. Our favorite VRBO apartment in Paris was recently sold, so upon reading the reviews of La Camargo, we decided to book it for a short stay.

There are both pros and cons to consider about this property. The pros are its location and the close proximity to great sites to visit, along with a quick and easy walk to the Champs Elysees. The property is located on a chic street with lots of designer stores and art galleries. The apartment has a spacious bedroom and salon which are elegantly decorated. The kitchen has an induction cook-top but is tiny and very limited and so not easily workable for cooking, however, fine for coffee and snacks. At the risk of incurring the owners’ wrath, the main disappointment for us was the need for maintenance. The bathroom and toilet are worn and tired looking. The toilet always required several flushes (suggestion: get a modern one at a place like Castorama - less than 200 euros, et voilà - it works!). As well, the bathroom taps needed a good tightening. Both the interior front door and toilet door handles were missing screws and came off in our hands (pictures available on request). The only light source in the hallway on entering the apartment did not work; this was an issue upon entering the apartment late at night to try to unlock the door. We did notify the owner (by email) of these issues the first day we arrived, but got no response. So, quaint as the apartment might be, the owners need to keep up with maintenance and insure that all of the services are working. The first day we arrived, the internet was not working, and the printer was out of toner. Suggest the the owners do a "walk around" before all rentals to insure that the apartment is "as advertised".

Owner's Response: This review did not incur our wrath, even if that appears to have been the ambition of the self-proclaimed 'world travelers' who penned this overbearing screed. Frankly, their last review dates back four years, and so we seriously doubt the veracity of their braggadocio. Be that as it may... While we are not angry, we admit that the nit-picking of frustrated literati with faulty judgment and idiotic suggestions, who cannot see the forest for a few scattered blades of grass, is tiresome. The renters called us over dozen times during their short stay. We bent over backward to accommodate their many requests, and so the inference that they were somehow abandoned is not only offensive but bad faith. We have put a great deal of effort into making La Camargo the gorgeous, warm and welcoming experience that it is - an elegant "home away from home". It is gratifying to know that there are those who recognize and appreciate what we have done and the exceptional value that it represents. Please refer to the next review (or any other of the 68 five-star accolades published on this site) for an accurate assessment of La Camargo, written by discerning and bonafide world travelers.

It's like stepping into a 19th century salon. The pictures tell it all!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and Is have traveled the world. I don't think we've had the pleasure of staying in such wonderfully accommodated venue as this. We enjoy the 4 and 5 star experience, and this venue did not disappoint.

The apartment is generously equipped, including a "cozy" but serviceable kitchen. There's lots of closet space and TV options (including a large flat screen TV, DVD player [and DVD's] and Cable TV [best for those who speak French] in the bedroom with access to American TV apps, including Netflix).

From what I can tell, there are seven apartments in the building, with one on each floor, all serviced by a tiny (2 person, sans luggage) "lift".

The location can't be beat. It's a couple of blocks north of the Champs Elysee-Clemenceu and south of the Miromesnil Metro stations and the four available subway lines (two from each station, including easy transfers to suburban RER trains) took us to everywhere tourists would want to visit. Yet the area itself was hardly "touristy". The Presidential Palace is only a block away, and the ritzy Hotel Le Bristol is directly across the street. There are scores of art galleries within a two block radius. (And, it appears that John-Paul and David (our landlords) gave plenty of business to some of them when they decorated this apartment!)

Don't be shy about asking the owners for help. They have programmed their telephone number into the listing for "Concierge" on the apartment's telephone and provided us with suggestions for restaurants, patisseries and a grocery store within easy walking distance.

Tips: When we stayed (in late September, 2017) there were literally no lights in the hallways or elevator. When I reported this to John-Paul, he indicated that repairs were waiting on permits, so the problem will likely be solved before it's an issue for future guests. But we couldn't find our way after dark without using the flashlight feature on my iPhone. Also, apparently like everywhere in Paris there are no window screens. We left the windows open on our first night and the next day my wife was covered in mosquito bites. (She told me she could hear them buzzing in her ears in the night and didn't realize that mosquitos could ascent to the 6th floor.)

I've already recommended this venue to a next-door neighbor couple who are Francophiles and to a friend in London who plans take a "holiday" to Paris in the near future.
