An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. Designer and partner of Harlem Shake, the popular local restaurant. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
Loved the brownstone ! It was close to the subway and we were able to travel to and from the city in very little time. In no time we were so comfortable we referred to it as " going home " each evening. Dennis' hospitality is not to be matched and such a wealth of information.
My friend and I were looking for a true New York experience...we wanted to live like the locals while in town. Staying at Dennis' place was AMAZING! It is extremely clean, stylish, and in a safe neighborhood. It was easy to find a place to eat, get to the train, and with the Duane Reed nearby, this location was ideal for us. The beds were so comfortable after a long day walking and sightseeing. There was a little heat wave while we were there, so the two A/C units were much appreciated by these Texas gals. We can hardly wait to come back and stay at this wonderful place again. Dennis was very detailed, kind, and made sure we were happy with everything. PERFECT HOST! He even let us keep our bags there until we had to leave for our flight, which was incredibly helpful!
Dennis' lovely upper brownstone home is the best in which we have stayed in New York. Details such as fresh flowers and lit candles on our arrival were so welcoming. This garden flat was beyond the expectations created from the photos. I would recommend to all and would rebook.
Great property - you will not be disappointed!
We stayed here late August with our teenage daughter. Dennis was away on our arrival date but arranged for Ron to meet us. His enthusiasm for Harlem/New York could not be matched!
Having previously stayed in NY hotels it was great to enjoy the space this apartment offered. The air con & room fans were more than welcome. Kitchen was well equipped with tea & coffee supplied.
Beds were of the highest quality and the garden a delight.
As others have mentioned, ideally placed for subway access and make sure you pay a visit to the Apollo Theatre!
Plenty of amenities including wifi, TV, A/C, room fans, music set up the ought the home, washer/dryer, etc.! Truely a way feel at home while on vacation. I would highly recommend and plan to stay here again! Great place!
