About Michael O'Malley

I am a Chicagoan who came to Sarajevo in 2001 to work with ABA/CEELI for one year. Visited Dubrovnik that first summer and decided that this was the place I wanted to live. Bought my place in 2003 and built the additional apartments in 2008. Have traveled widely and also spend a fair amount of time in Ireland, although the last two winters, I've travelled to India.

I enjoy cooking, swimming, hiking, music, travel and interesting conversations over some good wine or home-made cordials.

Michael O'Malley purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Michael O'Malley chose Dubrovnik area

I had not really heard much about Dubrovnik before first visiting in 2001 - my first summer in Sarajevo. Walked into the Old Town and my jaw dropped. After a couple of years of visiting Dubrovnik, I decided I would rather live near the Old Town than in it. I believe I made the right decision.

What makes this apartment unique

Great place to kick back and relax. I never tire of the views of the sea. Changes every day. The song of the birds is steady. - depending on the season.Only one neighbor to the south of me and they only come occasionally. Olive groves to the north and Italian Cypress behind me. A two minute walk to the sea - great way to start the day with a swim; or walk up into the hills behind me for a more strenuous form of exercise. Two first-rate restaurants within walking distance - 20- 25 minutes away along the coast. Elefiti islands are quite nearby.Bus stop just across the street will take you to the Old Town. Also available is a boat which will carry you to the Old Town.

Apartment Villa Rosa Zaton Croatia

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week in mid-October at the beautifully situated Apartment Villa Rosa in Zaton, a short drive or bus ride from Old Town Dubrovnik. The comfortable apartment, which is fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans, utensils in case you like to eat in, looks out over a garden to the bay. The view is lovely from the balcony. Prior to our visit Michael sent us information about restaurants, things to do in the vicinity, and driving trips to Bosnia and Montenegro. We decided to take the one day trip to Montenegro and were happy we did. The Bay of Kotar is beautiful and the beautifully preserved old town is filled with interesting shops, restaurants, and historic sites. There is also a beautiful state-of-the art marina not very far away where you can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat and you will feel like you are in Monaco not Montenegro. It is definitely a must do! Michael is a very knowledgeable guide and thoughtful host. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time in Croatia and it was due in great part to Michael.

Villa rosa Dubrovnik? Zaton Croatia

  • 5 of 5

Our Stay at Villa Rosa was the best part of our 3 week trip through the Balkans! It was away from the crowded Dubrovnik and just a 15 min drive or bus ride. The apartment was casual and very comfortable. We really enjoyed sitting on the porch and looking down at the harbor and bay! We took very refreshing swims and had a great time having lunch or dinner in the Harbor. The food was great at every restaurant we tried, and the staffs were all just terrific!

Michael arranged a day trip with a small boat to tour the coast and islands, highlighted by an amazing cave swim!

We enjoyed Michael so much and he was an awesome host! He made our trip just perfect! We would recommend his apartments to everyone!

Great Honeymoon, Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We decided to spend our honeymoon here. It was a perfect location because it was in a quiet neighborhood away from the busy tourist areas. It was easy to get to the Old town by bus.(Only 15mins) The bus stop was right next to the apartment. So convenient!

The view from our balcony was spectacular. Watching the sunset every night was so relaxing and going for a swim in the bay in front of the apartment, every morning and evening was heavenly!

Michael, the owner, was extremely helpful and was a wealth of information. He gave us recommendations for dinner locations, kayak trips and island tours which all ended up being absolutely wonderful. He really went out of his way to make sure we had a good time.

We really enjoyed the conversations with Michael. We decided to take Michael out for dinner one night, what a Blast! We look forward to coming back to Villa Rosa in the future.

We loved Villa Rosa!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Villa Rosa's comfortable apartments that have beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea. We loved our stay there. It was conveniently located- just 15 minute bus or taxi to the Old City. Michael O'Malley was a fantastic host. We enjoyed our time spent with him and really appreciated his recommendations. We loved our morning and evening swims in the Sea-just a 2 minute walk. We were there in July and it was 88 degrees & sunny every day! We walked to dinner two nights, only a 10-15 minute walk along the sea. We ate at Vala Zaton (great wood fired pizza and salads) and at Konoba Ankora (delicious fresh seafood) that was on the Sea. Also, Villa Rosa is near a market that is well stocked with wine, fruit, cheese, cereal and meat..really anything that you need. I was traveling with teenagers (13, 14, 15) and they had a blast! We explored the Old City, did the kayak tour and spent time at the Copacabana Beach. We walked(about 2 hours to walk the circuit) the ancient walls around the Old City which offered stunning views of the Adriatic and the Old City. The Kayak tour was 3 1/2 hours and went around the island of Lokrum and the Old City. The kids loved Copacabana Beach, which has an inflatable playground in the sea! Our last night Michael arranged a sunset boat ride. It was the perfect way to end our stay!

Villa Rosa is on beautiful Zaton bay with great little beaches on the Adriatic. What views from your balcony every morning! It is in an amazing location with only 15 minutes from the old city, and a 2-minute walk to the water which we took advantage of with morning and evening swims. Michael O'Malley is a fantastic host, chef, and tour guide. Thanks for the memorable experience, Michael!

Villa Rosa: Simply Idyllic

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Villa Rosa is simply idyllic. As you sit comfortably on the balcony of your apartment you are imbued with a sense of tranquility as you view the bright greens of the trees that shape Zaton Bay, the sparking blue of the Adriatic and the bright whites of the boats that dot the sea. ...but it's not just the view that will take ten years off of your life. It's the view, plus the scents of the orange trees, olive trees and lavender plants all over the Villa Rosa property.

At Villa Rosa, you enjoy the peace and calm of a little fishing village, yet you can stroll to a number of outstanding restaurants that would be Zagat rated if they were located in a big city. Plus you can jump on the bus and be in the historic Old City in 15 minutes. It's also really convenient that a one-minute walk will get you to a little Croatian market that sells everything you could possible need or want. We bought delectable wine, fruit, croissants, meats and cheese from there.

Additionally, the owner, Michael O'Malley is an incredible host. He is thoughtful, interesting, insightful and a ton of fun.

Sretan put! (That's ...Have a good journey...in Croatian)
