About Rob and Mike

Rob and Mike purchased this property as a get away... They wanted to be close to the Withlacoochee River, Forest and Rails to Trails bike path..... While initially only visiting the property once a month they quickly grew to love the area and all that it has to offer. A few years ago they decided to look for a permanent home in the area that would be able to accommodate their love of animals and give them space to have more... Well they found the perfect place... Not far from the River House, in Sumter County a 60 acre ranch where they raise their goats, horses, chickens, donkeys and cattle on their own piece of heaven. Not wanting to completely part with the River House , they decided to rent it out as a vacation spot to travelers, so others could experience it.

Rob and Mike purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Rob and Mike chose Florida

Picking out this River House was easy.... The first time they saw this property they wrote an offer to purchase.... It was just that simple. Where else can you find a house on stilts that makes you feel like you are in a tree house on the river!

What makes this cabin unique

The property has this amazing trail that winds around the woods... with gopher tortoises checking you out as you pass them, and almost the entire property is shaded by oak trees... It has a great mystical feel!

Excellent isolation, a lovely cabin, well-equipped, with a few downsides

  • 4 of 5

My partner and I stayed here with our two cats for about a week. There are many good things to say about it, though there were a couple of problems I'll mention as well.

Positives:

• The area is quite isolated in a way perfect for anyone wanting a real retreat. The cabin is set far back from the road, and from the cabin one can't see any other properties.

• There's not much on the ground floor (mostly a laundry room and empty space) but the second-story cabin is more spacious and comfortable than I expected and well-furnished. There's a balcony most of the way around with a great view and I found it very pleasurable to sit out there and read in the sun.

• The TV has a nice surround-sound system with an older style DVD player. There also was a Netflix subscription available, though the connection seemed spotty.

• The kitchen had most of the things one might want: oven/stove, microwave, fridge, coffeemaker, toaster oven, all of which worked well.

• The owners obviously tried to include all sorts of things a render might find useful. There were plenty of extra towels and other supplies, such as cleaning sprays, trash bags, shampoo, paper towels, and so on.

• Our cats enjoyed the visit. They've never travelled before but they settled in very quickly and really loved the view and all the wildlife outside.

• The owners left us a gift basket in welcome with several kinds of food goodies; that was a very nice touch.

Negatives:

• Some other reviewers mentioned this: the water in the cabin does have a sulphur smell. I'm sure it's properly filtered and safe, but if the smell alone bothers you, that could be a big problem. I could smell it; it did not bother me much, though I didn't like it. But my partner found it very problematic; the smell was enough to make her feel queasy at times. This may be an extreme reaction. However, if you are thinking of coming here and bringing someone -- yourself or another -- who can be affected a lot by such smells, it might be a bad idea.

• The bed was very soft in a way that is not good for people with back or hip problems. Again, this may only be an issue for some people, but someone used to a very firm mattress might end up wanting to sleep on the (very firm and nice) couch—so long as they are not too tall to fit!

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and are impressed with the care the owners Rob and Mike put into the place. Thanks, guys.

The most relaxing getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful quiet relaxing time here. The cabin was perfect and just as described. Mike and Rob thought of everything. Our dogs loved the totally fenced property and I am sure they were hoping we would stay forever. The river is fabulous and great to explore via the canoe. (kayaks were also available) Our son loved the wildlife and the baby frogs he found hopping about. I would definitely like to come back again. It's not so far away from Dade City so if you want to go out to a nice restaurant, you can find some there. We explored the nearby Withlacoochee trail also, which was gorgeous.

Great.

  • 4 of 5

Just add some screening on the doors where you have added the barrier for the dogs. Ducttape was found, and used for a hole in the screen, plus my flip flop! Water is still stinky, maybe a water system in the future?

Located just an hour from Tampa and and hour from ocala. Is a rolling agricultural and pristine Florida forest... The withlacoochee river and the withlacoochee state forest as well as the longest continuous road bike path in the state. Withlacoochee state trail the trail is just a short 5 minute ride from our cabin door!!!!

At 46 miles in length, the withlacoochee state trail is presently the longest paved rail trail in Florida. The trail corridor runs through small towns, ranches, and natural areas as it makes its way south from citrus springs to trilby. The trail traverses a region that offers many other outstanding recreational opportunities. Among the recreational highlights nearby are the unpaved trails in the croom area of the withlacoochee state forest, the withlacoochee river (south) canoe trail, and fort cooper state park. The withlacoochee trail will eventually join many other trails in the region, becoming part of the central florida loop.

For the trail bike users there is the croom trail: forest - croom off-road bike trail. This network of single-track forms two loops of 12 and 35 miles.

Actual trail length, including connectors, is over 55 miles. Trails consist of florida uplands, sweeping cross country trails (wooded and open) to abandoned mines and challenging pits and drop-offs. Check kiosks sites for trail maps.

Hiking trails start right from the cabin door... With the withlacoochee state forest trail head just 3 miles from the cabin. For a dip into the primordial wilderness that envelopes the withlacoochee river on its northward flow to the gulf of Mexico, take a short jaunt to nobleton (Hernando county) for a nature trail that showcases some of the biggest cypresses around. The trail is entirely in the shade of the floodplain forest – and loops around several sinkholes, including one with this massive cypress in it. It intersects with the orange-blazed Florida trail in an upland pine forest, a separate 7-plus mile adventure.

A lesser-known part of withlacoochee state forest, the oxbow trail is on the northernmost tract of the forest along the withlacoochee river, the trails and campsites all eagle scout projects. While the easy-to-follow big loop trail is a popular circuit for families and folks taking their dogs on a walk, the tougher-to-follow but more visually satisfying addendum, the oxbow nature trail, makes its way out to the very tip of the peninsula, providing excellent scenic views of the river from a variety of perspectives. Riverside camping is open to individuals and groups who obtain a free permit from the division of forestry.

Kayaking or canoeing the withlacoochee river right from the cabin in our two kayaks made available to renters. Within an hour of orlando and tampa, the withlacoochee river meanders through an unspoiled cypress forest in rural Florida. It ranks as one of Florida's most scenic rivers, and yet, it’s uncrowded and unspoiled. (on a sunny winter weekend when i visited, an 8-mile paddle involved seeing only one canoe. The count for alligators? Four.)

The river, Florida's fourth largest, winds through the withlacoochee state forest, a wild, natural region with many options for picnics and photography .

For the gay or lesbian traveler the sawmill camp ground is just 5 miles from the cabin. Sawmill is the premier gay and lesbian community in the southeast.

Relax at the heated outdoor

Clothing optional pool, experience the tranquility of the spacious grounds, walk around ricki lake with towering cypress trees along the withlacoochie.

Campers dance the night away in woody's nightclub and enjoy shows at the main stage inside the massive courtyard. Enjoy all 3 bars, various themed events, entertainment, daily activities and delicious food 365 days a year!

There are u-pick blueberry farms nearby, horseback riding and weeki wachee resort.... The only city of live mermaids! Is only 25 minutes away...

Buccaneer bay Florida's only spring fed water park!

Enjoy white sandy beach, thrilling flume rides, beach volleyball, lazy river ride, lil' mates cove and much more!!
