About the property

Tranquil 1930's bungalow in the vibrant heart of Austin

Perfect for families!

115C Nellie House: tranquil 1930's bungalow nestled in the vibrant heart of Austin's South Congress District. Steps from Austin landmarks like Jo's, Continental Club, and Guero's, but secluded enough for a quiet night on the terrace. Truly unique retreat in the center of it all.

The house is tucked away on a private residential street in South Congress, the trendy neighborhood just over Lady Bird Lake from downtown Austin. Steps away are chic boutiques, restaurants and one of Austin’s oldest and most storied music halls, the Continental Club.

A few feet (meters) from the Cap Metro No. 1 stop at South Congress and minutes by foot from Zilker Park, Auditorium Shores, downtown, the State Capitol, the Austin Convention Center--everything the city has to offer is at your doorstep.

Compact but comfortable, the house retains the charm of the original 1930s design with 10-foot ceilings, New Deal-era millwork, and original wood floors, but it also boasts all of the comforts and amenities you would expect at home: Wi-Fi, sound system, DVD player, laundry room, and a chef's kitchen. There are also small surprises that belie the taste of the owners as well: vintage and modern furniture, cool art, plenty of books on design, poetry, design, and music, and lots of vinyl LPs.

The secluded outdoor terrace behind the house faces a rock wall created by the natural fault line that runs behind the house, a perfect place for cocktails before (or after) exploring the city.

The master bedroom occupies the terrace-facing corner of the house and features a king-sized bed with monogrammed sheets, while the second bedroom features two twin beds and faces east, with a view of the city just outside.

Please contact via email to inquire about availability for any dates or if you have additional questions.

Austin's central bus lines, the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 7, all have regularly scheduled stops at the bus stop located a few feet from the house on South Congress.

Taxis regularly travel up and down Congress and are easy to flag; they also schedule semi-regular pick ups at the nearby hotels (Hotel San Jose, Austin Motel, Kimber Modern, St. Cecilia, etc).

Bicycles are available for rent by-the-day from the Austin Bicycle Company at the Austin Motel.

Charming, quirky little house in perfect location.

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable, clean and situated in a perfect location for walking to shops, restaurants, music and bars on South Congress Street. The Nellie House is a little treasure. A family home that accommodates three to four people comfortably. We loved the back porch sitting area which is cool and comfortable, although will soon be overlooked by a large extension being built on to next door's house. Plenty of towels and some of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in, indicate that the owners want to be sure of your comfort. The house is a family home and quite small, but we didn't plan to stay in most evenings; although we did look for a deck of cards one night, and ended up playing a children's board game! WiFi worked well; we did use the A/C because even in late October, the temps were quite warm. We all loved Austin and would happily go back for another visit.

Excellent South Congress Location

  • 5 of 5

Location, location, location! The house is walking distance to everything South Congress has to offer. No need for a car. The house is clean, the beds are comfortable, and it has a great front/back patio. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thanks Julie.

Great Location for First Visit to Austin

  • 4 of 5

Great location; most places we wanted to visit were w/in walking distance, especially, Doc's Motorworks and the bat fly-out. Though, we found nothing extraordinary about the property, we two couples enjoyed our stay in the South Congress Dream and its nice neighborhood. The owner was very helpful when we had to make contact. Less ambulatory persons may find the front stairs and the downhill/uphill path to South Congress, "adventurous". The beds were comfortable in this cottage-like house as we spent our days out enjoying Austin & the surrounding area, a good night's sleep was important. Being just a over 100 ft. above South Congress, the traffic noise was not too distracting to sleep. The kitchen is well equipped, but we did not cook much with the excellent restaurants nearby. For us first-time Austin visitors, this was the place to stay.

The house is tucked away on a private residential street in South Congress, the trendy neighborhood just over Lady Bird Lake from downtown Austin. Steps away are chic boutiques, restaurants and one of Austin’s oldest and most storied music halls, the Continental Club.

Austin has long been a haven for countercultural types, with tattoo artists, bohemian coeds and techies biking side by side along the glistening shores of Lady Bird Lake. But these days, Austin is more chic than shabby. New upscale restaurants — many that rely on local, organic ingredients — are popping up all over the city, along with bars featuring artisanal concoctions. Meanwhile, the South by Southwest (SXSW) music, film and interactive festival continues to draw an affluent crowd of technology geeks and celebrities. In April, Food and Wine Magazine will court foodies with its first culinary fête in Texas. Then, in November, the Circuit of the Americas Formula One track will open, drawing race car fans from around the world. But the old Austin isn’t hard to find: You can still hear the twang of a country guitar in many doorways and chug of Lone Star at just about any bar.
