2 bedrooms, 2 queens, 2 baths with ocean view showers, 2 lanais & 1 great room.

At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get your to sweet dreams. The only house closer to the water is Kapoho Makai, our other rental property in Vacationland, where the whole yard is under water during high tides.

Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan and bamboo. Both bedrooms are master oceanfront with views along two walls. The woven bamboo ceiling adds to the tropical ambiance.

The house is built in the traditional sugar cane shack style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. As you open the entry door, you see a 16' glass wall between you and the ocean. The kitchen, dining and seating "great room" is 17' wide with 16' of it glass. A whole lot of ocean view. All the furniture is rattan, the sectional, dining set and barstools. The decor is Hawaiiana right down to the surfboards and traditional local crafts. There is a desk, 42" TV and a large DVD library. The floors through out the house are porcelain tile. The ceiling is woven bamboo. The kitchen counters are rain forest marble tiles. Light fixtures are retro-tropical and complete the look.

On either side of the great room are master bedrooms with showers that have ocean views. The beds in each room face the ocean and have 6' windows facing the ocean. Even the windows on the sides of the bedrooms have ocean views. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. The showers in each bathroom are quite large and feature unique local touches.

The sliding doors in the great room open onto a 35' lanai perched 40' above sea level. It is 53' to the water from the lanai. There are very few homes this close to the waters edge. The lanai has 2 sofas, 2 lounge chairs and 2 ottomans all with Sunbrella cushions.

The lanai at the front of the house, has a gas grill, American made patio dining set and spring base lounge chairs with Sunbrella cushions. This lanai also has an ocean view and is private and offers full sun. This lanai is perfect for private sun lounging or star gazing. Dining here can be out of the trade winds and away from the porch lights.

There is a carport and covered entry stairs in the old Hilo style as it does rain at night especially. Locals fish off the pali below the house and opii pickers test their luck at low tide. Unless it's an extremely calm flat day, there is no ocean access below the house. And remember to never turn your back on the ocean, rouge waves do appear.

There is a laundry room downstairs accessed from outside the house. There are some ice chests, snorkel gear and reef slippers also. The yard is landscaped with 8 coconut palms, hibiscus, heliconia and monstera. There is an ocean side outdoor shower under the lanai.

Susanna was born in China and has traveled the world for work and play. Her passion is food and wine and her kitchens reflect her tastes. John began his business in San Luis Obispo in 1973 and still shops the world for home furnishings for indoors and out. That business, Daylight Home Lighting & Patio, is widely known for quality and selection second to none. John has designed 3 homes and all reflect function and comfort with a classic sense of style.

Why Susanna Billings chose Pahoa

Kehena subdivsion has ocean front lots unlike other neighborhoods and Kehena Makai has a low key, sugar cane shack curb appeal. We like that it looks like pre-war Hawaii and blends into the neighborhood. We bought the house in 2006 and it had just been built in 2001. When we purchased it, it had plywood floors, no sheet rock, a corrugated steel ceiling and was very basic. We loved the old Hawaii feel of the place and felt it deserved to be more finished. We added walls, porcelain tile floors, woven bamboo ceiling, sliding doors, ocean view showers and an up graded kitchen with rain forest marble counters. The kitchen/dining/seating main room has a 17' peak and exposed beams. Ceiling fans are seldom needed as the many windows and trade winds keep the house as cool or warm as you'd like. The lanais are on both sides of the house and both have ocean views. We been working a lot on this house to make sure it has the best offering a higher end vacation rental home could be, so more people could experience the unique and true Hawaiiana of this part of the island. We love white sandy beach and luxury resorts too, but we love the original Hawaiiana more! If you like to snorkel in one of the best tide pools in Hawaii, there's the Kapoho Waiopai tide pools; if you like to see Pele there's the only live volcano which flows into the ocean, amazing fireworks drop into the ocean with sky high steam it's just breathtaking; if you like to drive along the uncultivated coast line you can do it along one the most beautiful drives in the world - the red road with tree canopy on top of your head; if you like to see traditional and historical hula cultures there's the Merry Monarch Festival every April at Easter Time; if you like to surf with the local boys and girls, come on over; if you like to see the best tropical botanic garden, come on over...this is Puna, the real Hawaii.

Even the rainy days are fantastic at this side of the island - so much to do and see! We spent days chasing down the best ice coffee - from the food truck at the park just north of Pahoa.

Amazing!

We loved this house. It is perched on the edge of a dramatic black lava cliff with crashing ocean waves. We loved sitting on the lanai reading and watching the ocean. The place is wonderfully comfortable and homey, and we can't wait to visit again. Within walking distance is a black sand beach where we went snorkeling, which was wonderful. Overall, a great vacation home.

Wonderful setting and views -- loved everything about it

All 4 of us agreed that this house was fabulous. It had everything we needed and was extremely clean. None of us wanted to leave. I've rented houses on the big island and Kauai multiple times, and this is my new favorite. It was in the perfect location for us because we like to be remote and away from the crowds....it is not particularly close to any coffee shops, restaurants, etc., but that was fine with us. We were able to fully relax and enjoy the beautiful sunrises and crashing ocean waves.

Gorgeous Views!!!

We just loved the home and incredible views. The sounds of the waves crashing siting on the lanai was so relaxing and watching the sunrise every morning. Very laid back and so close to the Volcanoes National Park.

If we vacation again on the Big Island we will rent this home again.

Perfect oceanside getaway

Convenient location right on the ocean. Lovely decor. Two spacious bathrooms with lots of hot water. Washer and dryer. Couldn't ask for more. Had a great time and will be back.

Absolutely beautiful!!!

Exactly as described! The owner provided all of the information that you would need and people near by that could help if needed. The lanai was an amazing place to sit and watch and listen to the waves crashing! We spent 12 nights here. It's a little drive to the closet town, but we loved the seclusion that we felt. There is a small market at the end of the road near "Uncle Roberts". Enjoyed Uncle Robert's and people watching! We toured the whole island during our stay. Beaches are not very accessible and not very many of them. Enjoyed the "Hot Pond". I personally didn't like the gecko lizards in the house but was told that is the case everywhere. A lovely home!!!!

Beautiful Ocean View but beware of the bugs!

We stayed 5 nights at the end of January 2016. The home is nicely decorated and has a sweeping ocean view off the back lanai. Unfortunately for us, we wanted to leave after our first night there. The home is located in a tropical isolated area of the island and with that comes a lot of bugs. We were careful to follow the owner's instructions about sealing trash bags, leaving no food out in the kitchen, etc. In spite of our efforts, we had several issues with ants in the bathrooms and kitchen, cockroaches in the kitchen, and some sort of flying insects (about a half inch long) throughout the house that especially came out at night.

We were mortified to see 100's of these flying insects on the exterior windows of the house that were attracted to any type of light. Several of these insects made there way into the house through open windows and doors even though there are window screens. As a result, we could not enjoy the large lanai off of the back of the house due to the incredible amount of flying insects. Nor could we sleep with our windows open at night because the bugs would come in. We did not notify the owner at the time because it was assumed that they knew about the issue and nothing could be done in the short time we were there.

In addition, there were a few other issues of note:

1. Most of the window coverings do not work and are stuck in the open position. It's great for the ocean views during the day but bad for hiding the bugs at night.

2. The shrubs and trees outside of the house have lots of spiders and massive spider webs.

3. There were about five friendly geckos that lived in side the house which we did not mind because they ate some of the insects that came inside.

4. One of the sliding patio doors does not lock so we did not feel we could leave any of our expensive electronics behind when leaving the house.

5. The area is so remote, your cell phones will not work. The owners told us in advance and do provide free wi-fi and a land line for local calls.

6. The laundry room downstairs has a few ginormous cockroaches that run out when you turn the lights on.

In closing, we would not stay here again as the bugs and insects ruin the experience.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, a tropical jungle environment on the ocean front can have insects. The ants and the cock roaches we try to control by keeping everything clean and with bait. Our porcelain tile floors throughout the house are pretty easy to keep clean and yet there can always be some critters get indoors. The 100's of flying insects would be cane beetles which hatch a couple times a year. When they do, keeping the screened doors closed is very helpful and yet they will still fly in to the light whenever a door is open. We have a very good vacuum that works excellently to suck them up when they do get inside. If they are left to roam on their own once inside, they won't choose to leave. Our lights on both the front and back lanais are positioned away from the doors and yet when there is a hatch, there can be 1000 beetles on the 16' of glass sliding glass doors, as they are attracted to the light inside. During daylight you won't see them outside. If they are not vacuumed up inside they will be visible all day. The beetles are 1" long or so and won't come through the screens so windows can definitely be left open for ventilation day or night. The blinds on the windows do all close by the pull cord and our cleaner leaves the blinds open to show how clean he leaves the glass. I'm not sure the blinds would "hide the bugs at night" as bugs inside would navigate through a closed blind. The massive spiders are cane spiders. They are large, make webs and I've never known anyone to be bitten but they're big enough to see, and they are trained to stay outside. Our laundry room cock roaches are standard sized mature tropical cock roaches and try to hide unless you surprise them while doing laundry at night. Since the laundry is in the basement and accessed from outside, the ginormous do not usually go upstairs to the house. Had we been notified about the situation, our advice would have been to keep the doors closed as much as possible at night, vacuum up those that make it in the door and to enjoy the front ocean view lanai, as it has a dining table and spring base lounge chairs all away from any outdoor lights. mahalo, john & susanna

We are on our own private lava ledge of the Pacific ocean, perched 40' above the water. No ocean access, but what a setting. On top of the Kehena Pali, we're a 4 minute walk to the Kehena Black Sand beach, 10 miles to Kapoho Vacationland and the famous Waiopae Tidepool Preserve and the Hot Pond and Champagne Pond along the beautiful Red Road, near Kaimu, Kalapana and Opihikao.
