About Thomas Marquardt

We are Thomas and Rebecca and live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We always had a dream to one day escape the dreary wet winters of west coast Canada and find a little spot in paradise to vacation and retire.

The long search for an oceanfront condo started 3 years ago, with many hours spent scouting locations all over the world via the Internet. We then visited some of the most idyllic spots, but never really found what we were looking for, until one weekend, in May 2009, Thomas discovered a small seaside town in southern Mexico called Puerto Escondido and instantly fell in love with the place. He went there to see an oceanfront condo, but it was not meeting all our expectations. When he was shown a property on a 100 ft high waterfront bluff with an amazing panoramic view of the ocean, there was no stopping us, our adventure in Puerto Escondido began....

Thomas Marquardt purchased this condo in 2010

Why Thomas Marquardt chose Carrizalillo

It is an oceanfront property with a spectacular 180 degree view. Our condo is within short walking distance to the beach with golden sand and clear emerald warm water. Shopping is just a short walk away too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I had an incredible stay at Casa Rebecca. We loved the floor plan and the location was great. this are the highlights of our vacation experience:

o The palapa in the noonday sun – with the breezes blowing, and the so comfortable chaises (and hammock), and the 270 degree view of the ocean, we watched the whales and the fishing boats…

o Lying in bed at night looking at the starry sky and the unusual number of nighttime fishing boats and counting the shooting stars…..

o Walking everywhere especially to all the handy shops and restaurants in Rinconada and exploring all the houses and bays nearby….

o Marveling at the Mercado - only not as claustrophobic as Zihuatenejo or Puerto Vallarta and where else would one be pursued by an oompah-pah band through the flower section of the market?

o Swimming at the end of the day in the bathtub warm pool....

o And the overall revelation of how reasonable prices were – we usually cook alternate nights with our other couple but your stove remained unsullied as we ate out every night.

o Finally, the property manager extraordinaire; always responded quickly and positively while displaying charm and patience (I locked myself out twice… I came down to Puerto Escondido to recuperate from the flu and attendant pneumonia feeling more dead than alive and have fully recovered. Our stay was very pleasant and we think you’ve found a gem!

Thank you for the chance to discover Puerto Escondido –its been quite a revelation and we think we’re on to something really special,

Sincerely,

Richard and Heather K.

fantastic view

  • 4 of 5

The pictures do a very accurate portrayal of the home

beautiful view - nice granite countertops - very clean

the pots and pans and knives were in good shape

If you have rented many vacation homes before you will know you usually get

beaten up pots and pans and dull knives

We saw whales swimming by almost every day

The owner is very easy to deal with

We did have a few problems wifi not working etc but the manager and housekeeper were very quick to fix things when pointed out

In one of the reviews it mentioned the bbq not working and was replaced it was replaced however with a small charcoal grill - a gas grill would be nice

The area feels safe and easy to walk to restaurants and shops

If you have not been to the area before taxis are cheap to go anywhere you want to go

there are a couple of beach areas within a reasonable walking distance - you will need to be is reasonable shape as walking down to either is easy but the back up you will definitely work off your lunch calories -

there is a beach club within about a 10-15 min walk where you can pay $200 pesos and for that you get use of the pool a lounge chair and they take the $200 pesos off any food or drinks you buy - beer was very reasonable and you were right on a beautiful beach

We were there over New Years so beaches were pretty busy with lots of Mexican families as most areas are in Mexico at that time of year - but by a week after New Years beaches were pretty empty again

Needed maintenance..

  • 2 of 5

We stayed at Casa Rebecca for two weeks. The first week was quite frustrating as so many things needed repair. The WIFI and cable did not work upon our arrival, but fortunately it was quickly repaired within a day. Then all three air conditioners were not working properly and needed repair along with the refrigerator. It took the repair crew all day, but they did a good job. The following day, the cleaner came back as she was unable to clean properly before we arrived. The upstairs Palapa was in disarray and unusable. The BBQ was rusted beyond use and the birds (swifts or swallows) had taken over the rafters in the Palapa. There were bird droppings all over. The maid cleaned up, but given the birds (over 50, I'm sure) flew in every evening, making it impossible to watch the sunset. They buzzed us every time we tried to sit upstairs. Fortunately the property manager was able to get a crew out to install netting in the rafters which covered the nests, but it took the whole rest of our stay before the birds realized they had lost their nesting grounds. Plus installing the netting took two days and there was noise and no use of the Palapa. After the first week, we were able to settle in and enjoyed the rest of our stay, but it left a bad impression and we hope that everything will be in proper order for the next guests. We feel our stay was very expensive to have so much inconvenience and disrepair. One set of neighbors in the complex was great and helpful with our plight, but the flip side is that workers were updating the unit below drilling and pounding which added to our lack of a relaxing stay. Overall, very disappointing.

Owner's Response: Dear guests, unfortunately we can not always be aware of these issues in a timely manner, otherwise they would be addressed immediately. Our property manager is instructed to rectify any maintenance issues immediately and we will continue to keep Casa Rebecca in excellent condition. The BBQ has also been replaced in the meantime. We appreciate any comments that will help us to make Casa Rebecca a better place.

Beautiful accommodations, amazing view

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying here! We had a few hiccups, one of the locks on the main door didn’t work but we still fet secure as there were 3 more locked doors to get in the unit. The wifi didn’t work the whole time we stayed but was resolved in the final day.

We loved the area! We came for a wedding but not very good speaking Spanish. We did very well and managed ok getting around. Taxis were easy to obtain and pretty easy to communicate with.

Casa Rebecca was a little out of the way but totally worth it. Easy walk to the main drag (rinconada) where we caught cabs to go to all the beaches and stores. We will be coming back and we will be referring this casa to friends and family! It was nice and quiet. Not many occupants in the other units.

Gorgeous condo, stunning views, great town!

  • 4 of 5

This was our first time in Mexico, and I am so glad we chose to stay in Puerto Escondido at Casa Rebecca, rather than some all-inclusive in the overly touristy areas of Mexico.

Casa Rebecca provided everything we needed for a wonderful beach vacation. Stunning views from the balcony or palapa, or from the pool, which in the low season, was practically our own private pool! There was air conditioning in the bedrooms and living room so the condo was always a great escape from the hot, sunny, humid climate (which we didn't mind when we were lying on the beautiful beaches of PE!)

We chose to eat out most of the time, because PE has some AMAZING food, but the condo was stocked with everything we needed if we wanted to cook, and there was a great market and supermarket a short cab ride away to get supplies.

Maid came twice during our stay and cleaned the place top to bottom while we were at the pool or the beach. All the appliances functioned well, and it was great having a washer and dryer!

When we came back from the beach covered in sand and sunscreen, the HUGE two-head shower in the master bath was a treat. My only gripe is the water never seemed to get beyond just less than cold, but it wasn't a huge issue for us since we were always jumping in the shower after a hot day outside.

Staying at Casa Rebecca felt like we were in a luxury resort, but minus luxury prices and in a nice, laid-back town where prices are not inflated as they are in Acapulco/Cabo/Cancun.

The condo is short walk to what became my favorite beach in PE - Playa Carizalillo. It's small, the waters are calm enough to swim in, it's surrounded by GORGEOUS vegetation, and the people who own the restaurants and surf school/rental places on the beach are super nice and accommodating.

The condo is also a short walk to the Rinconada, with plenty of shops and wonderful restaurants. Cabs are easy to grab (and cheap!) if you want to visit the other beaches like Zicatela, or Pto Angelito.

You have to go through a couple locked gates to get to the door of your condo, so safety was never a concern - nor was it a concern for us anywhere we went in PE. Nina, the property manager was readily available to help us with whatever we needed, and she ensured our comfort during our stay (and even checked in with us a few days into the trip).

I've read with Mexico, sometimes what you see in a listing is not what you get - that was not the case with Casa Rebecca. We'd go back in a heartbeat!

Amazing place! You'll love it!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place complete with oceanfront views and an fantastic rooftop area with comfortable seating and a hammock. Very clean and a terrific place to relax and enjoy. When you get hot just take a swim in the pool! Within easy walking distance to restaurants and beaches. No car is necessary as the taxis are extremely reasonable for venturing out. Thomas, the owner, was great to work with. We would highly recommend this property! There were 5 of us that thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The Condo was fantastic. With wonderful views, great location and beautifully appointed, this had everything we could have asked for for our holiday. Felt very safe and swimming beach within 5 minutes walk. Our local contact was most helpful in suggested places to visit and eateries. Would go back in a flash. Phill and Sue- Australia
