The cottage is located right on the ocean. You will have direct access to the beach. Sitting on the deck, watching the shrimp boats in the evening and the sunrise in the morning while you enjoy breakfast in the screened-in porch on the deck; it doesn't get any better than this. There is a Kwik Mart/gas station down the road for those last minute supplies. Across the road is a surf shop for those of you who want to try surfing. There is a restaurant within walking distance.

About Rich Murren

My time is spent as a home remodeling contractor. And I am busy all the time with that job. My spare time is spent at the island. We love to come here with our new grandchildren, who are just discovering playing in the sand.

Rich Murren purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Rich Murren chose North East Florida

We came to Amelia Island for a realtor friend that needed help on their condo. We loved it here and realized that Amelia Island is truly 'Florida's Best Kept Secret'. There are no crowds and it is a short distance from Jacksonville Airport and the culture that Jacksonville offers if that is your choice. We enjoy long walks on the beach and going for a swim if we feel like it.

What makes this cottage unique

Watching the sun rise from the deck, watching the dolphins jump and dance, seeing the shrimp boats bring in their catch, pelicans flying in formation over the deck, the unique character of downtown Fernandina Beach, wonderful restaurants all with their own charm, friendly people everyplace you go, walking on the beach and finding cool shells. These are but a few of the benefits to staying on the beach.

Quick getaway

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here in April of 2015 with my mom and I couldn't wait to get back to show my husband and kids this wonderful spot on the beach! It reminded me of the many summers I would spend with extended family at this beach. It is a great location! The husband can be pretty critical when it comes living spaces but the home was perfect for our family; and more importantly, the hubs was satisfied and said he'd like to come back and spend more time here. We visited Fort Clinch and the beautiful downtown area in the few days we were down. We also spend a LOT of time on the beach. My kids LOVED being right on the beach. We could wake up and head right out. We spent many mornings walking the beach looking for shells and I even found a few sharks' teeth! The kids loved sitting on the back porch and checking out their beach finds for the day. The Murrens are wonderful to share this little spot of heaven they've got here at the beach and are so kind and quick to follow up with any questions. We look forward to getting back again and enjoying this property.

Great little place with a wonderful beachfront view

  • 5 of 5

Just what we were looking for in a beach rental - a quaint, old Florida style beach cottage with all the necessary amenities. Easy atmosphere and convenient to the Main Beach. Just a short drive to downtown Fernandina and a short walk across the dunes to the Atlantic. The house is kept neat as a pin and simple - so it was exactly what we had hoped. We could not have asked for a more relaxing time and the Murrens are so hospitable.

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Much has been said in the previous reviews, so in short it was a great experience - location was fantastic, house clean and cozy. Mary & Rich have been great to deal with, and I am looking forward to renting from them in the future.

Much Needed Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Even though tropical storm colin tried to derail this much needed vaca it did not. Mary was so nice I called to tell her we would be arriving a day later in hopes of not driving into the tropical storm and she was so kind she even stated she would refund me for the night missed and I didn't even ask. But on to the review of the house It was great The location is amazing you wake up to a view of the ocean and its crashing waves directly upon walking into the living room. We liked the window unit in the bedroom it reminded us of our first apartment and it cooled it well. The breeze from the ocean made the afternoons and evenings a joy. this place is also just a few short minutes from the historic district, grocery stores and other activities but you never feel like your in the middle of hustle and bustle We would recommend this place to anyone wanting a quit relaxing getaway Mary is just a joy to talk to and both our conversations were like I was talking with an old friend . Hope your (Mary) trip to New York goes as well as ours did Thanks

Owner's Response: So very glad that you had a great time and eventually some great weather during your stay at Beachy Keen. It sounds like you were able to enjoy the area and the beach that was waiting for you every day. Thanks for your well wishes on my trip to NYC during your trip to the beach...mine was great but totally exhausting...I think I need a trip to Beachy Keen! Hope you come back and visit us again. By the way....we added a window A/C unit to the second bedroom.

Great value

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I rented Beachy Keen for a week for our anniversary, and for the most part we were really happy with it. First, the house was very clean and nicely furnished. I think it would start to get kinda cozy with 3 people and 4 would be a squeeze, but there was adequate furniture and amenities to accommodate 4. For just the two of us though it was perfect; cozy enough to enjoy the together-ness but spacious enough we could spread out a little. It's also in a GREAT location! Fort Clinch and downtown are just a mile or two away, and you won't have to drive more than a few minutes to get to gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores, etc. We really appreciated how quick and easy it was to get anywhere you wanted to go. And of course the beach is just steps away! The beach is nice and wide with a gentle slope down to the water. At low tide there's a great big flat area you can set your chairs and enjoy the surf washing over your feet to keep you cool. The house also has maps of the island and brochures of local things to do, which made finding our way around much easier. It also has amazing water pressure and a great soaking tub, which was a nice little bonus. Rich and Mary were also easy to work with; paying was easy and we got our deposit back quickly. Over all, this cottage is a really good value.

There were just a couple things about the house we were less pleased with. One, it only has two window AC units, which can't keep up with the afternoon heat. We tried opening the doors and windows instead, but unfortunately the house is far enough back and the dune between it and the beach is high enough that there was no breeze. This meant that no matter what, the house was sweltering in the heat of the day. If you plan to be under a sun shade on the beach or out exploring downtown or the fort in the heat of the day, then this won't be an issue for you, but we like to use the afternoon as downtime and so we were pretty uncomfortable for a few hours every afternoon. The second thing we were a little disappointed by is the deck and deck railing are just the wrong height to be able to sit in a chair and enjoy the view. If you stand at the railing you can see the waves over the dune, but when you sit all you see is dune, railing, and sky. So watching the surf from the deck isn't really any option. However, at night there's Great stargazing from the deck, so definitely plan to spend some time out there after dark looking up at the sky!

Owner's Response: We're glad that you had an enjoyable time at Beachy Keen. The house windows A/C system seems to work best with the assist from the ceiling fans. The Adirondack chairs on the deck do put you at a disadvantage for viewing the water. The other normal type chairs on the deck give you a better view over the railings. Thank you for your input and we hope to see you again.

Fun Anniversary!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and stayed at Beachy Keen for our anniversary weekend. We wanted a simple getaway without frills. This was perfect! The location was just right. The beach was quiet and we loved the view from our deck. The cottage was super clean. There was dish soap, hand soap, etc which I did not expect. Nice. We biked most places. We would totally stay here again. We brought our own water and bedding.
