Kentucky Natural Bridge State Park and the Red River Gorge is down the road for those obsessed with arches and cliff climbing. There is easy access to Natural Stone Arches sculpted by 70 million years of wind and water and towering cliffs encircling steep, forested slopes and narrow stream valley called the 'Clifty Wilderness' by cliff climbers and naturalists. The hiking trails are Easy, Moderate and Strenuous covering hundreds of miles and maintained for hikers of all ages. Yet, if you are looking for the primitive, less traveled trails, you will not be disappointed. Note: The Gorge is a National Natural Landmark and is managed year round by US Forest Service.

About Kenneth and Sheila Brown

We enjoy living in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Although we are not totally isolated, traffic jams are rare. The air seems fresher and clearer. We enjoy traveling on the 2-lane blacktop road (KY 11) lined with trees and wildflowers; a couple times a wildcat has leaped across our route and scampered up the roadside hillside; too fast to get a picture, but a memory was created. One early morning, Ken rounded a corner about a mile from here and a black bear was running ahead of him in his lane. Ken was braking and the car was almost sitting on the bear's butt when finally, it veered off into the forest. In the winter, we feed the wild turkeys. Turkeys have a hard time surviving bad winters. There are days that we are delighted with things that happen in our environment; this is a good thing for us - to be delighted.

Kenneth and Sheila Brown purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Kenneth and Sheila Brown chose Kentucky

Sheila's Tale: My mother and I would ride a taxi to Natural Bridge and spend the day. She packed our food in a red plastic carrying cooler with 'Coke' written on the front. Home canned green beans, and fried potatoes, corn bread fritters wrapped in a dish cloth, a mason jar of water and a bunch of green onions were our food for the day. We hiked the trails and swam in a lake with turtles and fishes nibbling on our toes. The taxi would pick us up in the evening and take us home to Irvine, KY, 30 miles away. I learned to appreciate trees and wildflowers and the beauty of nature in the Natural Bridge, Red River Gorge and Danial Boone Forest. My heart has been softened to nature's beauty throughout the world because of my visits to this area. And, I brought my daughters, their friends and my Girl Scout Troop here. We camped out and did all the things that I did in childhood and more. Further, I brought my grandchildren here. Where else could I retire but to the place that heart-felt memories of my mother teaching me about nature and the natural world and, me, in turn, teaching my daughters and grandchildren to cook a meal on an open fire; and further, helping young girls experience the self awareness that almost everyone has bad hair in the morning. My heart is here because what I value is here: all kinds of natural beauty. I am here and I welcome you to visit us at Kentucky Wildflowers, LLC. You're gonna love it.

Ken's Tale: It has been my life-long dream to live in a log cabin on the hill in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. We live on the farm year round.

What makes this cabin unique

We have 150 acres to hike. There are trails cleared for convenience and enjoyment; the trees and flowers can be enjoyed during nature walks. Also, you can invent your own trail if you want to get off the beaten path. Best of all, a creek runs through this property; the creek has never been completely dry. Some of the holes are deep enough to get really wet. The property is called Wildcat Hollow and is surrounded by cliffs. A cool breeze blows all summer down the hollow across the creek. At night, birds get tuned up and sing. You can see the stars when the clouds are gone and it is so dark at night.

Incredible Stay

  • 5 of 5

Ken and Sheila were hands-down the most incredible hosts I have ever had for an Airbnb/VRBO stay.

I proposed to my fiance at the Indian Staircase in Red River Gorge and wanted a place to go to where all her friends and my friends could be for us to celebrate together. While Ken and Sheila usually receive families at their cabin, they were incredibly accommodating in allowing my group of friends get together and celebrate. We pitched tents so everyone had a spot to sleep and Ken and Sheila could not have been nicer about making sure we had everything we needed.

Lillie's cabin was a very modern house (nicer than my apartment back home by far) with TV, a beautiful kitchen, plenty of beds, and a full working bathroom. There was a fire ring out front for S'mores and a charcoal grill in the back where we made kebabs.

The day after we celebrated we got to walk around the gorgeous land that Ken and Sheila own and walk in the creek. Their property is the perfect representation of everything Red River Gorge, with plenty of greenery and space to roam around.

Overall, we had an incredible trip! Anything you need, Ken and Sheila are willing to work with you, and they are just the nicest most genuine people I've ever met. I wouldn't do anything different for my proposal.

Thank you Ken and Sheila!

Owner's Response: We loved this guest, his fiance and friends. To start off our planning conversation and process, we learned that he is in the Navy ROTC Program. Since Kenneth was a sailor, we had to give some flexibility to our "partying" policy for this guest. Let's say that less than 30 people arrived to celebrate this Engagement Party; they were walking everywhere trying to find the shortest routes to Lillie's Cabin from where they parked their cars. Since there were several cars, the guests parked about 100 feet (as a crow flies) from Lillie's Cub Cabin. How wonderful it was to have all these visitors at Wildcat Hollow. When you know, as our guest did, what you want, we can usually accommodate your plans. Congratulations to our guest and his fiance; you are in our prayers as you start the next level of your relationship. We were part of the Engagement Celebration and, hopefully, we will be a part of any future celebrations. Note: We appreciate your commitment, sacrifice, service and support of our Country, the USA. Be safe. Be careful. God bless. Kenneth and Sheila Brown

The hosts were excellent, very helpful. The home is very nice, like new. We brought a cooler full of drinks and food, taking advantage of the full kitchen. The area is beautiful. The Natural

Bridge (with chairlift) is a must see. We had a great time!

Lovely April weekend

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 2.5-year-old daughter, and I had a lovely long weekend at Lillie's Cub Cabin. It was our first time to Red River Gorge, and I was a little uncertain since I knew I'd chosen lodging that wasn't necessarily ideal for a toddler. But, we had no problems. The cabin was incredibly clean and well-stocked. My daughter had no problem sleeping in the bunk beds in the loft, and though her early bedtime made watching evening TV in the family room difficult, it just meant my husband and I spent more time out on the porch. When we did have down time during the day, she happily played on the large porch while we enjoyed the swing. Ken and Sheila were incredibly kind and welcoming, checking in to ensure we had everything we needed. I also appreciated how close it is to Natural Bridge State Park, though we had easy drives out to enjoy Rock Bridge Trail and the Sheltowee Trace too. Would love to return.

Absolutley Perfect! Everything we needed was right there

  • 5 of 5

I cant believe we lucked into such a clean and well kept cabin with literally everything we needed, firewood, paper and fresh water. enough dishes and utensils, TV and Wi-Fi for catching up on work late in the evening if needed. We were so secluded.. but also right off the main road. I felt very safe and comfortable with my 3 young children. I am so grateful and I feel blessed that we were so fortunate to get this experience. WE WILL BE BACK! thank you Lillie's Cub Cabin.

Lovely Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My family and I recently stayed in Lillies Cabin over the weekend. It's the most beautiful cabin I have ever seen. It's perfect in size! The owners Shelia and Kenneth are wonderful people, whom will help you with any needs. The cabin was very clean and well taken care of. I really felt at home while staying in the cabin. From the trails to hike, to the fire pit in the front it was amazing. I loved the swing on the front porch, very relaxing. I can't wait to go back, and I will def be staying there again!
