Overview

About the property

Barn, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-5)

Located on the outskirts of the quintessential fishing village of Winter Harbor, minutes from the entrance to Acadia National Park on Schoodic Peninsula, our fully restored New England Barn offers a delightful retreat for your Maine vacation.

The antique furnishings create a cozy atmosphere in the open studio layout, while the convenience of a modern kitchen and bathroom makes your visit effortless. In addition to the two-person antique bed on the first floor and the double size pull-out sofa bed, the loft sleeps one. The dining area seats six.

Throughout the space, bookshelves are filled with reading for quiet times, and collectable art and quilts decorate the walls. The living area faces French doors, which lead to a natural stone patio and a large, private back yard.

At the front of the barn, an attached screened-in porch with dining table and chairs encourages 'al fresco' dining. The adventurous among you are welcome to open the cot there and savor the gentle sounds of the summer evening while drifting off to sleep. A Maine tradition!!

Our closest neighbor is an organic farm where you can purchase just-picked produce to accompany your fresh lobster dinner. Visit the unique farm animals, including cashmere goats and Norwegian Fjords.

This property is just a half-mile from Route One, which leads you antiquing up and down the coast, through seaside villages with inspiring views. Or, kayak, hike or bicycle in nearby Acadia National Park/Schoodic Peninsula Section. Just across the bay from it's busier Bar Harbor cousin, this section of the national park affords a relaxed and quiet retreat from the cares of the world. Wildlife abounds with frequent sighting's of eagles, loons, Canada Geese, deer and more!

Nearby downtown Winter Harbor boasts an old fashioned 5 and 10 (if they don't have it, you don't need it), a small grocery store, a post office, a community theatre, one of the nation's oldest golf courses (with ocean views from every hole) and a few bakeries and small restaurants. Buy your lobsters fresh from the boat at the local dock, or take the ferry (in season) to Bar Harbor for a traditional lobstah roll and chowdah lunch. On Tuesday mornings, join in the fun at the local farmer's market.

The closest airport is Bar Harbor (BHB), and the second closest is Bangor International (BGR). More competitive prices can be secured by flying into Portland (PWM) or Manchester NH (MHT).

Bar Harbor is a 30 minute ferry ride or a 40 miles drive by car.

Charming

  • 4 of 5

At first we were a little disappointed with a few practical things. There are no closets in which to hang clothes. We basically lived out of our suitcases. There is very little counter space in the kitchen. We like to prepare as many meals as possible when on vacation so while the antiques were interesting they took up much needed space. We adjusted.

The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and gadgets as well as some starter food items. That was very helpful. And, as others has mentioned, a lovely basket of locally made items - bread, jelly, sweets- were left on the doorstep. The bathroom was fine and the bed was quite comfortable. By the end of our stay we realized that we would remember the Antique Barn for its coziness and charm.

Owner's Response: Hi Nancy, Thank you for staying with us and for your thoughts on the Barn. We will add a clothes rack for folks to hang their clothes. Also, we will also replace one of the antiques with a counter top for preparing food. Glad to hear you will remember the Barn for being cozy! Warm regards, Christine

Beautiful Barn in good location, but some issues

  • 4 of 5

The barn is recently renovated and looks great, beds are comfy and the bathroom nice. Lots of fun decorations. Working with the rental service was smooth and easy. They are very responsive and took care of an issue we brought up.

The issue we had was with the air quality. The cooling system is ineffective and as we had some hot days we really couldn't stay indoors between noon and 8PM. Someone left moth balls in an open basket - for two nights we couldn't figure out why the air was horrible. Even after locating these and removing them, the place stills smelled bad overall ; even our bags had the smell for days after leaving. We had to keep the ventilation running 24 hours, which is noisy and made the place very cold overnight. Would not recommend this for hot summer period.

LOVELY BARN!! Great area to explore.

  • 5 of 5

Barn was a lot larger than i had expected from photos. plenty of room for the three of us and it provided all we needed in kitchen and seating areas. Plus there's the screened in porch where we sat one evening enjoying a drink. we enjoyed Winter Harbor, Bar Harbor, the Schoodic Peninsula and Acadia Park. and picked a lot of wild blueberries!! I kept looking into garden for some deer but nope....oh well, maybe next time.

Neat renovated barn close to the Schoodic side of Acadia National Park

  • 4 of 5

Neat little renovated barn with antique furnishings. A little warm during the daytime when we stayed, but the fans and cooling system were adequate. We were there in July, during an unusually warm time. Christine gave us local recommendations of places to go and eat and left some nice goodies (bread, farm raised eggs, and jam) to welcome us, which we appreciated. My one complaint was that it smelled of mothballs, which we bagged up during our stay. It was a bit overwhelming. Other than that we enjoyed the remote feel, away from the more touristy MDI side of Acadia. I would probably give it another star, if it weren’t for the mothballs.

Wonderfully peaceful and quaint place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at "The Barn"! It was located perfectly for me to travel down to Schoodic for a meeting while also getting to enjoy Maine out of the hustle and bustle. Christine sent us a great list of places to eat, shop, and enjoy and provided us with the sweetest goodie basket upon arrival. We loved it and would highly recommend it to others! Thank you so much for helping us have a wonderful trip!
