Description

Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday villa in Begur - Villa Anahuacalli

5 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms and a Studio which has a double bed (sleeps 10/12)

This lofty, open-plan home is located within walking distance of the village of Begur in the Costa Brava. Four bedrooms bedrooms are set around a soaring, sun-bathed central atrium with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and its storied Medes Islands.

Outside, terraces on four levels offer a 360 degree panorama of the sea, the Medieval town and its surrounding hills. Five cove beaches, the spectacular crescent-shaped Platja de Pals, and dozens of outdoor activities lie about within a few minutes’ drive. The village, a breezy five minutes’ walk up the hill, offers myriad opportunities to eat, drink and be merry, Catalan style.

Coming back up the hill from a leisurely day at Sa Riera, Begur's premier beach, you'll climb the steeply winding driveway to the four-car garage under the house. From there you'll continue upstairs, (perhaps dropping your towels and swimwear in the laundry room on the way up,) to appear in the center of a two story atrium. A full open kitchen with all the amenities sits in one corner, set apart by a wood-and-wicker bar and stools we brought back from Malawi years ago. The living area includes a new 44 inch LED television with satellite TV and a DVD player

Four bedrooms open directly onto this space, to the North, South, East and West. The North room has a pair of twin beds that can be joined to make a double, each of the others a comfortable double bed. Three of the four have their own independent entrances from the garden.

The atrium's long Northern wall is a seaward array of windows on two levels around a grand pair of French doors which open on your private garden. There you can while away the late afternoon under the wisteria-laden pergola catching the Mediterranean breeze that floats in over the neighboring treetops. If you come in 2014, there will be a new terrace with a 23 foot (7m) in-ground, kidney-shaped pool directly overlooking the sea, with a natural stone terrace all around, at the south end of the garden.

Back in the atrium, you can cross through the dining area and climb the stairs to the overlooking catwalk, looking out over the atrium and through the upper windows over the Mediterranean Sea. A row of windows at this level can be opened to create a cross current, keeping the house breezy and cool in the hottest afternoon hour. Stepping out onto the high balcony, you’ll see the town of Begur perched before you on a rocky promontory, its medieval Castell for a steeple.

At the end of the balcony, a few more stairs lead you up to the sitting terrace, where we hope you can enjoy a peaceful cocktail, or one more flight up to the sunning terrace, where you can catch the last rays of the setting sun with the pastry-like Medes Islands behind you. From there, an open cantilevered stair leads back down to the opposite end of the balcony, the outdoor circuit great fun for romping children.

The house sits on the steep hillside leading from the village center to Begur's most popular beach, Sa Riera. The Cap de Begur is a fan-shaped outcropping of rocky cliffs interspersed with deep cove beaches. The Cap is crowned by the picturesque Castell ('castle') around which the little town was built. From the ramparts of the Castell, one can look out over the nearby towns of Palafrugell, Palamos, Pals, and in the distance Dali's home town of Cadaques and even the French Pyrenees.

Besides the obvious tanning, bathing, and leisure opportunities offered by the town and its beaches, the area offers many, many opportunities for more organized activities for kids and grown-ups. Horseback riding, sky diving, spearfishing, sailing, go-carts, and of course the obligatory golf courses are just a few of the nearby attractions. Culture buffs will eat up the medieval towns, roman ruins, churches and old 'masias' (manor houses). Foodies will drool over everything from tapas to prime rib, while leisure professionals can just lay out on the terrace, drinking in the sun, the view and the Mediterranean breeze over a good summer read.

About Catalina Barratt and Jose Luis Garralda

We are an Mexican-American-Argentinian couple who have lived around the world and finally came to settle on the Costa Brava.

Catalina Barratt and Jose Luis Garralda purchased this villa in 2012

Why Catalina Barratt and Jose Luis Garralda chose Baix Emporda

We've lived in this town for many years and were fortunate enough to own a a parcel of wild, rocky land overlooking the magnificent Medes Islands. We built this house just so that we could enjoy the view, the breeze, and the sunshine from our own living room.

What makes this villa unique

The house is very near the lovely Medieval Town of Begur so that you can walk. You can also walk down through the woods to the beautiful beach of Sa Riera (you need to be a very good walker as then you come up hill). It has a unique view from the upper terrace which allows you to enjoy beautiful sunsets.

Fantastic family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this villa for 1 week with two toddlers, and three couples. The villa is huge with two kitchens and living spaces so there was plenty room for everyone. It is fully equipped and furnished to a very high standard. The children loved playing in the garden and we all enjoyed lazy afternoons around the pool and bbqs on the terrace. The house is a 5 minute walk into Begur (uphill on the way there) which is a lovely village with loads of nice places to eat. We also visited the nearby beaches which were lovely. Catalina and Jose Luis couldn't have been more welcoming. Thank you! Would thoroughly recommend.

A Stunning Villa

  • 5 of 5

This is the second year we have stayed in Begur and we couldn't have stayed in a better villa, rivalled only by next door Villa Olinda. The house is tastefully decorated and very spacious. It is well equipped with everything we could possibly have needed for our holiday. The kitchen was great for preparing our family meals and the barbecue area was very welcome. Our teenage children appreciated the pool (beach towels included) and table tennis, and the views from the rooftop terrace are simply stunning. This was a lovely spot to spend the evening with a glass of wine.

Catalina and Jose Louise, as always, went out of their way to be welcoming and helpful and provided us with a very welcome basket of produce to help tide us over until a visit to the shops. There is a supermarket at the top of the hill in town, an easy walk or drive, but an even better hyper market just a short drive away. We could easily have stayed by the pool all week but it is well worth venturing out to some of the close by beaches. The scenery is stunning and there are some beautiful walks. Of course if you don't want to drive, the town has everything you could need, a wonderful bakers and butchers, great restaurants and shops and there is often entertainment in the main square.

I'm sure it wont be our last holiday in Begur and we couldn't have been happier in this wonderful villa.

Beautiful villa

  • 5 of 5

The villa is absolutely lovely. We are a family with two children aged 13 and 10 and the villa was absolutely perfect for us; it would also be ideally suited to a group of adults as the rooms are all spacious and comfortable. It is extremely well equipped with absolutely everything you need. There are also thoughtful additions such as beach towels and garden games such as quoits. We really liked the design of the villa and the open layout with the different views to the sea and the village.

The children loved the pool and the table tennis and the outside sitting area with BBQ works well. The villa is peaceful, and feels quite private, yet is an easy walk into Begur. There is a good choice of beaches within an easy driving distance.

The owners could not be more helpful; I had forgotten my contact lenses and had them posted to me whilst on holiday, the owners stayed in over a couple of days to wait for the parcel; which I think is above and beyond expected.

All round a brilliant villa!

Great villa with sea views

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable, well-appointed villa in a great location just outside of Begur. It had everything we needed and fantastic views to the coast at Sa Riera from the terrace. It's about a 15 min walk into Begur along a shady path, so we were able to leave the car when eating out. The new pool is a great addition - perfect for cooling off. The owners were welcoming and helpful.

Begur is a picturesque Catalonian town dating back to the Middle Ages. Perched on a steep escarpment overlooking the Medes Islands, it's packed with shops, restaurants and nightlife. Since the fifties, it has served as an exclusive escape for the region's celebrities and discerning vacationers. Today the town and its surroundings offer a panoply of attractions and amenities. Morning sunbathers can bake on one of seven isolated cove beaches before retiring for a leisurely lunch at home or in town. After the traditional Spanish siesta, the village streets liven up as locals and tourists alike take the aperitivo in one of the outdoor cafes on the village square. If your lucky, you can join the village elders dancing the Sardana in great twirling circles to the cacophony of a traditional orchestra after dinner. When you're ready to head in, home is just a five minute walk down the winding beach road.

Other Activities: Besides the string of beaches that surround our little hamlet, Begur's environs offer a variety of activities and amenities. Nearby you can explore the stunning medieval town of Pals, with its splendid Gothic buildings and winding cobbled streets. Just 40km (25 miles) away, you'll visit Dali's birthplace of Figueres, where you can find his museum, stopping off on the way home at the castle the eccentric artist built for his beloved Gala. A fifteen minute drive will take you to La Bisbal D'Emporda, best known for its ceramics and the nearby Roman ruins at Ullastret. The provincial capital of Girona offers its own old town with Roman and Moorish roots, as well as modern amenities for shopping, dining, and a night on the town. For those eager to try their luck, the famous Perelada Casino will not disappoint, while their more comfort-oriented companions can enjoy its luxury spa. Horseback riding, go carts, and skydiving are just a few more of the neighborhood's offerings.

Golf: The Costa Brava was recently voted 'the best emerging golf destination world wide.' The moderate climate of this area makes it an ideal place for enjoying golf and it offers a number clubs: Perelada, Torremirona, Mas Pages, Gualta, Mas Now (d'Aro) & L'angel de Lloret. The nearest, Serres de Pals is only ten minutes away. The 18 hole, par 72 course runs among pine woods, olive trees, rice fields and water features. The course flows smoothly over the original curves of the land and has three areas; Links - a reminder of British charm, Woods - holes among trees, and Lakes.
