About the property

Tucson Glass Cottage: open-concept living in the desert

This architect-designed original home was completed in early 2013. High sloping ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, polished concrete floors, custom poured concrete feature walls, bamboo drop ceilings, beautiful recessed lighting and myriad 'Architectural Digest' touches make this the perfect spot for the discerning traveller seeking an urbane hideaway in the Sonoran desert.

The panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass walls mean you will be completely in touch with the desert landscape. Saguaros and other cacti surround you. Quail, rabbits, javelinas, coyotes may wander by. You will wake up on the bedroom to the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains to the east and can view the sunset over the Tucson Mountains from the dining area.

Covered quartzite stone decks facing both west and east. Acacia chairs and table on the east deck, bistro table and chairs on the sunset deck. Lounge chairs for sunny afternoons. Driveway parking for one car, a second car can be parked in a pull-out immediately across from the Cottage.

The Glass Cottage comprises two separate units, connected by a covered breezeway.

One half of the Glass Cottage has a Poliform queen size bed; Wassily-style chairs and a Frank Ghery cocktail table and 'Wiggle Chair' in the sitting area facing a working acorn fireplace; dressing room with ample drawers and hanging space; huge two-person glass shower with stone floor and stunning views to the west; vanity area with bamboo sink on cantilevered concrete counter; and a separate and fully enclosed toilet room. Facing east, you will wake up facing the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains.

A few feet away across the covered breezeway, the other half of the Glass Cottage contains the fully equipped kitchen with beautiful tiled countertops; a custom-designed trestle oak dining (or work) table, with 6 chairs; a Danish swivel reading chair and Damson reading lamp; and a flip-down sofa, ideal for an afternoon nap. Facing west, you'll be treated to the sun setting over the Tucson Mountains as you prepare dinner.

Tucson Glass Cottage shares 3.3 acres with only the owner's residence, some 100 yards away and oriented to ensure privacy for both homes. The Cottage is accessed by a private gravel road, shared only by the owner's home. The acreage is in the center of a group of 6 similarly large plots, far from traffic.

This is the perfect spot for an individual or couple seeking real tranquility and a touch of luxury in a magical desert setting. Yet an easy drive into the University area, downtown, and into the magnificent Saguaro National Park.

Unique Gorgeous Glass House Nestled in the Saguaros!

  • 5 of 5

Being Midwestern 1920's bungalow dwellers, we wanted a change of scenery as winter descended on us so we choose this contemporary 'cottage' and were not disappointed! Read through the other reviews for more details, but here were our highlights:

- The kitchen is well equipped and we loved to cook in it. Our favorite views were from this 'wing' of the cottage - the windows perfectly frame 'Sombrero Peak'.

- The full moon will keep you awake, but you won't care. Get up and revel in the moonlit desert.

- The bed is really comfortable with high quality sheets and a lovely real linen duvet cover.

- It's a bit like sleeping in an art museum - which was fun

- The shower is the bomb.

- Every evening after a day of hiking we'd come back, shower off the desert dust, and enjoy cocktails on the porch. We'd say, 'cue the sunset' and magically, the desert did!

As others have said, this place is fairly secluded but you are, literally, minutes away from a busy suburban area. You will hear traffic noise and the occasional train. You will also hear coyotes. You may also hear a burro (or was that a mule?) braying (never saw it though!) There is a small road that offers access to the 'main house' but we only saw one car drive by during our stay (keep that in mind if you want to walk around sans clothes - because... glass house).

And one final thing - the communication and hospitality were top notch!

Owner's Response: What a lovely review -- thanks so much for taking the time to share so much about your time in the Glass Cottage! And btw for those who would like to be 'au naturel', the bedroom unit is oriented in a way that ensures that absolutely nobody (except perhaps a passing coyote) can see inside. My architect was a genius!

Excellent property. Both the owner and site manager are great people to work with. It is located in a somewhat remote area yet 15/20 minutes to nice restaurants. It is also just minutes away from the Saguaro National Park and Desert museum. Waking up early for the sunrise and looking how it reflects around the room on the glass is stunning.

Lovely, quiet contemporary house

  • 5 of 5

I had a very enjoyable stay at the glass cottage. It's in a quiet location-- no neighborhood noise at all-- and very private despite all the windows. It's surrounded by desert vegetation so you feel immersed in the desert when you're inside. Lots of wildlife around, too. I thought both "pods" of the house were comfortable and pleasant to spend time in; the west-facing kitchen/dining room one can get hot in the afternoon but the AC cooled it off fine. The kitchen was well-stocked. The house is very convenient to shopping and to Saguaro National Park. I'd definitely stay here again.

amazing sunrises and sunsets!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the glass cottage. Jim and especially Carella were very easy to deal with and made our stay easy. We explored the Tucson area from here but were always pleased to return home to watch the sunset. Mornings were amazing, when the sun comes up you are gently awakened and feel as if you are alone in the Sonoran desert. We sure enjoyed the glass cottage and would recommend the glass cottage to anyone who is planning to visit the Tucson area.

Very private

Had a great stay. Would stay again. A television wouldn't be a bad addition & a more comfortable couch. Would love to stay again in the future, already planning another stay.

Owner's Response: So pleased you're already planning your return! We've had the folding couch repaired, and regret that it was not working well during your visit.
