Lakehouse on Private Peninsula with Spectacular Views

Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms ,2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-7)

‘The Peni’

This year-round vacation home (1,800 square feet) has been in our family for three generations. It has an exceptional location on a private peninsula with 1,500 feet of water frontage. Every room of the house has stunning views of Lake Hamilton. The main house has three bedrooms (a queen, a double, and a single with two single beds), and two baths. The kitchen and bathrooms (both with showers, no tub) were renovated in 2011. The living room and west bedroom were renovated in 2013. There is a gated private drive with plenty of parking. The long shoreline supports a variety of wildlife. You are likely to see great blue heron, ducks, geese, cormorants. The lake is stocked, and the deeper waters just off the south shore are considered some of the best fishing on the lake. There is a public boat launch a hundred feet from our driveway, and the property has a dock as well as a raft.

Each season provides special vacation opportunities; swimming, boating, fishing, fall foliage, ice fishing and skiing. There are also activities and events weekly at Old

Sturbridge Village.

No Smoking in the buildings.

Keywords: lake house, year round vacation home, surrounded by water, leaf peaking.

About Elizabeth Scott, Peni rentals, Lucie Satkowski

We are three siblings (Zabby, John, and Robin) who are sharing the family project of renting 'The Peni' where we spent all our childhood summers swimming, boating, fishing, playing with cousins, and riding our pony. Zabby runs a study program in Paris for a New England prep school, John is a retired teacher, and Robin is a lawyer. Both John and Robin live in Holland near 'The Peni'.

Elizabeth Scott, Peni rentals, Lucie Satkowski purchased this house in 1926

Why Elizabeth Scott, Peni rentals, Lucie Satkowski chose Holland

In 1926, our grandparents acquired a part interest in 'The Peni' when they purchased the hill just to the west of it. They quickly realized it was an ideal swimming place. At the time, there were no other 'camps' on the lake. They went to great lengths to acquire the remaining shares of this extraordinary spot, and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have benefited ever since. It continues to be a favorite place for the family to gather for swimming, boating, and family reunions.

What makes this house unique

Swimming, boating, fishing, privacy, space, wildlife, and bird life. The long, convoluted shoreline of 'The Peni' provides many swimming spots as well as places to explore. There are lovely walks in every direction including into the Quinebaug Woods, formerly part of the family property, now owned by Trustees of the Reservation and open to the public. There is a wide variety of fine dining in nearby Sturbridge.

Lovely spot

  • 5 of 5

We shared this lovely private place with a great blue heron who sat all the time on the point of the peninsula. Six of us, all adults, had plenty of room to spread out and find privacy and our two dogs had a blast going free all week. Bring some blow-up floaties to drift on if you don't feel like swimming or canoeing. Also, if you have a taste for history, you'll LOVE their book collection! This was a great family week. Owner's Response: Thank you for these nice words...and I'm so glad you got into the books! You portray a picture of a lovely, summer week...from the great blue heron to reading and swimming. This is what three generations of summers at 'the Peni' have been all about.

Loved it! Hated to leave.

The Peni is so nice. We had a great week and we were so sorry to see it end. The place is completely remodeled inside and has everything you need. The grounds are also terrific - from the fire pit, to the "cove" with the canoe and swimming platform, to the chairs perfectly positioned to watch the lake and all its activity - it was great! The only suggestion would be more comfortable beds... way to hard for us. Looking forward to next year!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your nice words. Repeaters....good idea to arrange things with Lucie directly since VRBO has imposed a new way to book and pay which I barely understand.🤔🙄. We just like to keep things simple. ES

Genuine Delight!

  • 5 of 5

The Peni has something fantastic everyone. The views, wildlife, proximity to local hiking trails and Sturbridge, well appointed kitchen, and variety of well-designed indoor and outdoor spaces made it perfect for hosting family who joined us throughout our stay. We woke in the mornings to bird songs, had an adventure each day, and went to sleep at night enjoying the fireflies and croaking frogs. The lake was quiet most mornings, breezes across the water cooled the cottage even on the warmest days, and clear nights were brilliant for star gazing. Experiencing all the beauty The Peni has to offer, especially with the youngest kiddos in the family, was indeed magical. Thank you, for all the care that goes in to making this property so special.

Wonderful in Every Way

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I searched extensively for a lake house rental that would comfortably accommodate us & our dear friends from Paris, France as well as our Chocolate Lab, Bailey. My husband & I have rented many vacation properties in the past with the "Peni" being by far the best. The "Peni" exceeded our expectations & was truly wonderful in every way. The peninsular location afforded privacy & stunning views from every window of the lovely abode. The house is inviting, spacious & so very comfortable. One can feel the warmth & history of the generations of family who has loved, owned & cared for the property. Splendid breezes off the lake along with cool shade from towering pines dare you to not relax. Many a delicious meal was prepared in the well equipped & roomy kitchen. Bailey enjoyed swimming in the lake with our grand nieces who made day trips over Memorial day weekend with their parents. Nearby trail systems provided great hiking experiences. We greatly appreciated the welcome we received from Lucie upon our arrival & her assistance as we prepared for our stay at the "Peni". Many thanks also to Zabby who accommodated our dates. We wish we could have stayed longer & hope to return again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this glowing review! I was sorry not to have met you the other day...especially since there seems to be a 'French Connection'. I have an apartment in Paris where I go every time I get a chance. Please stay in touch, and I would love to meet you...on either side of the Atlantic.
