Welcome to La Malagueña, a getaway that will enthrall your senses and nurture your spirit.
Our house is in the heart of downtown Guanajuato in the most beautiful plaza in town-Plaza San Fernando. From our house you can comfortably walk to most historical and cultural sites and many language schools, restaurants, cafes, and bars. We're only a few steps from the Basilica de Guadalupe, Teatro Juarez, Mercado Hidalgo, and the University of Guanajuato. Since our house is in the heart of downtown you don't have to climb steep narrow streets or callejones.
Our home was originally built in the 18th century and has been restored and remodeled several times, the last time by the renowned Mexican artist, Juan Ibañez. It's made from adobe so it naturally warms and cools the house and the temperature inside is always ideal. Its construction is of stone and pine with copper accents. It takes advantage of the Mexican sun and sky and its position on the most beautiful square in Guanajuato with French doors opening onto the fountain below and a wonderful rooftop garden in which you can sit and while away the time, above it all.
Our place is ideal for the seasoned traveler who prefers the comforts of home combined with the uniqueness of a true Mexican experience.
You'll not only enjoy the comfort, style, and location of our place but also the hospitality of our staff. ¡BIENVENIDOS!!!
My husband and I lived in Guanajuato for many years and loved living there, however, due to the nature of our professions we had to relocate. We come back to Guanajuato every chance we get but when we are not there, we like to share our place with visiting travelers.
Since we both love to travel, we try to provide our guests with the same standards of excellence that we expect when we travel.
Maria Demello purchased this house in 1997
La Malagueña is truly a magical house. There is no other house in town quite like ours. The architecture is so unusual that it's difficult to describe but every room is filled with character and style. There are plants everywhere in the house, even in the bathrooms. The rooftop is a peaceful oasis with more than 100 plants and a great view of the mountains, Plaza San Roque, the University of Guanajuato, the Mercado that make you feel you're on top of the world.
Our location is unbeatable! You are in the center of everything. You don't even have to go out of the house to enjoy Guanajuato because the vibrancy of the city comes to you. When you open the balcony doors to the plaza, you let in the festivities and can hear the concerts, view the performances, sing along with the troubadours or simply people watch as you enjoy a glass of wine or a Margarita.
* Flexible check-in and check-out. No set policy unless we have other guests arriving the same day.
* Bilingual administrator who is only a call away for any needs or recommendations and 24/7 for emergencies.
* We offer great bilingual walking tours of Guanajuato with historical, cultural, and social insights of the downtown and less know but as important sites outside the center of town.
If you want to be in the middle of it all, then this is a great location. The balcony overlooks one of the many small plazas in town and this one is bustling with different restaurants, shops, and arts. I love the panadera (bakery) literally just a few doors away - perfect for grabbing breakfast or some treats at the end of the day.
The house is rustic (the pictures shown really "enhance" the rooms) there is no A/C (we bought 2 very small fans at a local store) and the shower on the main level is small. Hot water doesn't last long, so no long showers. We would alternate - I'd shower in the morning, the husband at night to make sure we had hot water. No toilet paper can be flushed due to the old septic system, but this is true for ALL Guanajuato and San Miguel. So it's not a negative comment on the house - just something to know about the city and surrounding area.
The plaza is lovely, but it is also a popular area, so keep in mind that there is activity (noise from restaurants, music, people partying) until 11pm to as late as 1am. We didn't find this a nuisance as we were sooooo tired at the end of the day we literally crashed out! But it was also unique to lay in bed and hear mariachis playing - I mean you are on vacation, so you don't want it to be the "usual" stuff you experience at home! This is just something to be aware of- if you are looking for peace and quiet, this might not be the house for you, but if you are looking for a real vibe of the city, you will be pleased.
Maria (the owner) was delightful to work with and very helpful as was Lorena who welcomed us to the house and showed us how things worked there. Local bagged coffee, bottled water, "safe" ice, fresh fruit and flowers were waiting for us - so it was a nice touch.
The house is rustic, but again, I loved the creaking floors, doors that are slightly "off" and the stone work.
Many thanks to all for our time in Guanajuato - MC, Rick, Wes and Oliver
My husband named this The Indiana Jones house because it has so much old world character. You enter right off Plaza San Fernando ( the best local plaza in town) and wind your way along beautiful old columns decorated with tons of plants and even a huge cement skull on one column, smiling at you, as you wind your way up a flight of stairs to your Villa with balconies a block long over looking the plaza and fountain. My husband recently had knee replacement surgery and had no problem with the flight of stairs as there are good strong rails and it's only 1 flight.
The first floor includes a bedroom, bathroom with shower, well-equipped kitchen, large dining room, and a huge living room with a T.V. and Netflix. We found the TV and WIFI worked well, and we got hooked on Netflix while staying here. The next floor has the master bedroom, another lovely bath full of plants, a huge closet area, another sitting room, and a gorgeous, large, roof top terrace. There is a 3rd bedroom off the kitchen--up a flight of stairs that we did not use, as it was just the 2 of us. The owner had fresh flowers in every room and distilled water all around--we never ran out and we were here for nearly a week. There are 2 hot water heaters, so you'll never run out of hot water either! The furnishings and appointments make you feel like you are in an old Hacienda, and the homeyness and character radiates throughout, making it very, very special.
We loved being right on the Plaza. There was always something going on, and we were serenaded nightly by singers, mariachis, even Opera. Yes, as with all plazas in Mexico or Italy, if you want to be away from it all, stay in the country, as the music and happy families permeate the Villa balconies, and in the mornings you wake up to church bells, roosters, etc. Personally we love this type of experience! I am a light sleeper, but I found it easier to sleep with all the beautiful sounds, not difficult, as stated by a prior reviewer. The town is charming and we felt safe and secure in this lovely home.
The housekeeper Sote was sweet and well trained and kept the home in great shape. There is a W/D if you need it. We used Lorena the house manager for a tour--which we broke into 2 days-- due to my husband's recent knee surgery. She took us to the mines and ex-Haciendas nearby and it was fascinating. I recommend you lock down the price before you go, as we didn't ,and she kept raising it as we went along. We highly recommend this place!
We just returned home from a fantastic week in Guanajuato. GTO is always lovely, but staying in La Malagueña made it just perfect. This beautiful home is located in one of GTO's loveliest squares -- great for people watching, late night botanas, and best of all, enjoying the Tuna Madrigal, as the route goes right past the house! We just opened our windows and let the serenade begin!
A few things to note.
1. You definitely want to take a tour with Lorena. She is a lot of fun and she will show you bits of GTO you might not get to on your own. Be sure you include breakfast when you tour with her - she took us to two nice breakfast places we might not have found on our own - especially the one up in Sta. Rosa.
2. Some other reviews of this property talked about the location being loud. Given the central location, I could not disagree more. Despite being right on a popular square, I was pleased with how quiet the home is. There is activity going on every night, but from the upstairs bedroom, after 11PM (even on Friday and Saturday), it was reasonably quiet. I'm sure there are many exceptions to this, including holidays and festivals, but in general, La Malagueña is a great balance of location and amenities and the pulse of the city.
3. Regarding Wifi -- due to the structure of the house, the wifi kind of comes and goes depending on your location -- you just have to roll with it. One tip is if you plan to use Netflix on the TV, the wifi signal is a bit weak, but we found that pulling the TV out from the wall a bit gets you just close enough to the router that the wifi signal stays connected. But you will probably be so busy seeing all that GTO has to offer that you will never have time to even turn on the TV!
4. Be advised that there are stairs to get into the house. If you have mobility issues, this is not the home for you. But if you can do stairs, it is well worth the climb -- Especially the roof terrace on a moonlit night!
5. Maria, the owner, Lorena and Sote, the house managers are all so lovely and will do whatever is necessary to make your stay enjoyable.
We loved La Malagueña! There is not much else I can say that has not already been expressed by previous reviews. I hope you enjoy this lovely home as much as we did!
My family of 4 really enjoyed our time here. The house was beautiful and has an amazing roof top terrace with views over the square and town. I miss it! The house is very spacious and has lots of character. We would definitely stay here again!
We just came back from a one month stay in Guanajuato and we are ready to go back to that town any time. We spent that whole month at La Malagueña, and enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. The house is located at Plaza San Fernando, which is perfect to discover everything that Guanajuato has to offer by foot. And Guanajuato has a lot to offer from the beauty of the colonial town itself as well as museums, concerts and above all the people from Guanajuato.
We used extensively the terrasse on the roof to enjoy our end of the day glass of wine among the plants, the surrounding nice view and the birds signing for us.
It is true that Plaza San Fernando is a lively place, but nothing that prevented us from sleeping, and the sounds of estudientinas signing is certainly a joyous and happy sound. As for the stairs, they did not cause us any problems. You just have to take them one step at the time.
And I cannot end this note without saying few words about Lorena and Sote. They were both extremely nice and gracious and facilitated our stay in so many ways. We certainly recommended taking a tour with Lorena that includes a visit to the Hacienda Gabriel de la Barrera among other sites. She can also make excellent recommendations about places to visit in Guanajuato.
The communications with Maria, the owner, were always easy and rapid. We certainly recommend this house for a pleasant, and yes lively stay in Guanajuato.
We absolutely loved our 3 weeks in this beautiful home. It is true there are stairs which require care when climbing but my husband (age 75) and my (age 60) just took our time and had no problems. The apartment is very private in that the windows are positioned in such a way that no one can see in but you can see out. Which was fantastic. It's also like a miniature jungle with all the wonderful plants on various balconies and in the bathrooms.
The apartment is located on the Plaza San Fernando which is a small but lively plaza filled with families, tourists, singers, and cafes. It is true it is a bit "noisy" until about midnight. But that noise to us was the noise of life....happy people and wandering minstrels. Our first night home in Florida my bedroom seems much to quiet. If you want country quiet then the apartment isn't for you, but frankly no place in Guanajuato is country quiet...it's a vibrant, friendly, lively city.
Lorena and Sote were very helpful. we took a day tour with Lorena which was so interesting and helpful. I'd suggest taking it with her and taking it towards the beginning of your stay as she has a lot of interesting information about the city. Sote keeps the place spotless, bug free, and well-watered.
The apartment was very centrally located for walking all over the City. Easy to catch a bus or a taxi.
We would definitely stay at La Malaguena again if our travels bring us back to Guanajuato. Oh, and regarding the shower. The "rain" shower head just needed a bit of cleaning with a toothbrush, mineral deposits had plugged up some of the holes. It works like a charm now.
Other Activities: House located in the heart of downtown Guanajuato within walking distance of the major cultural venues, historic monuments, touristic attractions.
