Totally works for a multi family beach vacation, but there are some things worth noting...

  • 3 of 5


* the price is right

* the flexibility of # days, etc.

* layout and decor of house

* location (& beautiful view from widow's walk)

* communicative property manager, housekeeping, etc.

* hot tub works and receives regular maintenance


* The house is outdated and sort of falling apart in (mostly) cosmetic, non-essential ways. A few simple repairs would make a huge improvement. I understand that any expense like that detracts from the owner's profit, but there are issues that could make or break a family's decision to return to the house next time or find another one.

* The dishes and utensils are clearly someone else's discards; the bowls are Christmas-themed, for example

* Some of the cabinets and drawers in the kitchen are racked to the point of being unusable and frankly dangerous if someone did try to use them

* The television, wiring, remote control, etc., are functional but odd. There are random old electronics sitting around.

* The house is literally shaky. I understand that a house on stilts has some give, but--for a humorous example--my 7yo son started flossing (dancing) in the living room, and the coffee literally sloshed up and out of the coffeemaker in the kitchen. I'm not kidding.


* There are no bathroom linens! Bring your own or call ahead to make arrangements ($$$) to have some made available to you.

* There is no hand soap.

* Management provided laundry detergent and normal dish soap but did not provide dishwasher detergent

BOTTOM LINE: I'd give it 3.5 stars if that were an option, but with a little TLC and investment, this house could easily be a 4 or 5 star rental. We loved the location and all the other stuff listed under the PROs, but we'd have to see some of those other issues addressed, namely the kitchen drawers and quality/quantity of dishes, be addressed before deciding to make this our go-to Outer Banks beach house rental.

Lack of attention

Desperately needs some attention. Sofa cushions have NO cushion, you are literally sitting on the wood frame. One bathroom toilet was broke. We tried to fix it but it was still not right. You can't open or close the kitchen drawers. I don't know if the tracks are broke but it was really hard to get to any utensils and only half the tv's/cable boxes worked. It was close to the beach and the outdoor shower was nice but it really needs a lot of TLC to be comfortable.

Not ready to take in occupants

Before booking this stay my wife looked at the reviews and had some concerns with some of the things that were issues with previous renters. She called to find out if any of these issues were addressed. She was assured that they were corrected. "They were not" Upon arrival I had to set up the TV's with the help of maintenance, some of the then did not work at all or had missing components. I had to put 5 paper backs books under the bed to make the bed level (missing leg), I called maintenance for some bleach to get rid of the black mold on the kitchen wall. Trash on the grounds, loose boards with nails sticking up were also noted. The kitchen drawers had broken tracks and tilted back being held by the drawer below....did manage to fix one by using the track from another drawer (silverware drawer) Then there was an ant problem in the kitchen....maintenance was called again, don't known if they came. I have pictures if you care to see them. As a Healthy Home Evaluator for the Department of Energy, this rental would have received a very low score. Water damage on the interior walls is due to rotten trim around the windows, some of the trim is so bad it's almost non-existent. I can see where they already had problems with the water lines because they were not insulated (they left the old lines laying on the ground) We did ask if there was another place available. I will not recommend this place to anyone. This pretty much how I will write my stay in Face Book

Owner's Response: Our priority is definitely to please our guests. However, we really would like our guests to avail themselves of on site management to address problems rather than submitting their feedback several weeks after their stay. We would rather address their concerns while there rather than after the fact. We note our recent guests' concern but also note that their stay was immediately after a rather unusually cold winter for the Outer Banks and some pipes under the house had frozen. The contractors clearly should have removed debris from the ground including paneling. Unfortunately this was never brought to management's attention at the time although they did come out for other matters like the television programming. We point out that some of the TVs are for DVD and VCR use only and the others are connected to Direct TV which sometimes call for reprogramming. Management serves that purpose as they did with our March guests in case guests prefer not to call Direct Tv themselves. Since management serves as the eyes and ears for the owner in taking care of guests we rely on their information. They've assured me that for the items they were called out for they addressed such as the inevitable ant problems that periodically come up at beachfront property. They also brought bleach for the guests concern about mold. Management indicates that they look for issues such as mold and may overlook areas that are not extensive. As the guests pointed out, there appeared to be previous water damage which indicates that it has now been addressed with a need to touch up some of the woodwork. So that our future guests are assured, please note that some issues may arise during a guests' stay that the owner is not aware of. So we ask that you immediately call management when these issues arise. We definitely appreciate the feedback from our late March guests but we are somewhat perplexed by the late evaluation since management indicates that they were present at our guests' departure and that they seemed like pleased guests.

Nice Quiet Spot

The house was in a perfect location as far as close to stores but still in a quiet area and very close to the beach. It was very affordable that allows dogs which is a huge plus. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is the house could definitely use a fix me up. The drawers in the kitchen need to be fixed, the deck wood could use some tending to, the ceiling fan is a bit sketchy, the couch cushions reeeeeeeally need to be replaced, and there was a lot of glass and trash outside of the building. Other than that the house is a good fit for a simple vacation :)

"Our beach week in Salvo"

Although we had to leave one day early due to a medical problem, we really had a good time here and the property is a Central point to the lighthouses and activities south on highway 12 and also just as close so that you can have day trips to every thing North on highway 12 as far as Corolla.I'm sorry we had to withhold one star from our review, but this was because the house needs just a little TLC..such as stuck cabinets,lights, and just general upkeep in maintenance,but overall, a good place to take your family for the week.

Great hot tub. Close to the beach. Good price. My family had a great time. Everything went smoothly.

A couple items could be upgraded, outdoor shower, kitchen cabinets and the living room furniture but for the proximity to the beach, grills and hot tub, this was just what I wanted for the price and for only 3 months notice. Great value!
