About Charlie & Pam Hile

Hi! Our names are Pam and Charlie Hile and this is our family. We have been coming up to this area for over 25 years and it's our 'home away from home.' Some people think we're crazy to drive 4 hours to get out of the cities, but we think it's worth every mile. Why? Because the area is absolutely beautiful! Turtle Lake is over 2,000 acres, spring fed, has up to 17 ft. of water clarity, hosts 16 different islands, and is NEVER green! It is always clear, cool, and inviting. Turtle Lake is one of the premiere lakes in Minnesota for fishing Smallmouth Bass and it's also known for it's abundance of big Walleyes, Northern, and Largemouth Bass, along with Sunnies, Crappies and Perch. Sportsmen and sportswomen will also appreciate the fabulous hunting opportunities this area provides for deer, woodcock, grouse, geese and duck. Big Turtle Lake is a quiet, lazy lake and since it's over 2,000 acres, you will leave behind the crowded and noisy lakes of the cities. It's a bit of a step back in time, although the area offers fine dining, antiquing, and a quaint place to get a cup of coffee or an ice cream cone... the town is small, the people are friendly, and you go at your own pace. Sleep when you're tired, eat when you're hungry, and enjoy the time in between however you choose. Whether it's sitting on the log swing watching the sun set or the eagles fly, kayaking around the lake, playing horseshoes, geocaching, reading a good book, mountain biking at nearby Suomi Hills, Scenic State Park, or the hundreds of miles of logging trails, or fishing, hunting, hiking, and golfing... we're confident that you will find enough things to do to keep you and your family busy. Or better yet, come on up with no agenda and let your adventure unfold before you!

Charlie & Pam Hile purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Charlie & Pam Hile chose Minnesota

We decided to buy a cabin in the northern woods of the Chippewa National Forest because this area has always had sentimental meaning to my husband. His father worked at a CCC camp in the area after coming home from WWII. In later years he returned with his family to share with them the place he had learned to love for its wild beauty and quiet peacefulness.

What makes this cabin unique

Our cabins are located in a unique area for many reasons. One being that we have hundreds of great fishing lakes within a 1 hour drive... Lake Winnibigosh, Spider Lake, Jessie Lake, and Bowstring being just a few. There are also several lakes known for their great Muskie fishing such as North Star Lake, Deer Lake and the Big Fork River. There are 5 Golf courses within an hour's drive for those who love to golf. A local park offers a playground and tennis courts. No matter what the season, but most especially in the fall, the nationally registered 'Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway' leads you over winding and rolling hills through the forest pines. Spectacular views of the passing lakes await you at each curve of Highway 38. The 'Lost Forty' is forty acres that were never surveyed and therefore missed being logged by lumberjacks. It has an interpretive walking trail where you will view virgin red pine, black spruce and white pine trees that are over 300 years old! Visiting the 'Joyce Estates' allows you to get a feel of what was once a millionaire lumber Baron's vacation hideaway. Suomi Hills and Scenic State Park are two places we love to return to time and time again for hiking, mountain biking, and cross country skiing. Although there are many opportunities for day trips and adventures, we enjoy spending most of our time right within our own property or on the lake. We love to spend the day fishing or swimming. In the evenings we grill a nice meal and enjoy a good beer or a nice glass of wine on the deck just feet from the lake. Once it gets dark we head over to the fire pit and lose ourselves in the flames. Mostly we enjoy our getaway as a place where we can truly relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature. We have found that some of our best memories with family and friends have taken place on Big Turtle Lake where time just seems to move a little slower.

Wonderful lake cabin experience

  • 5 of 5

One of the most enjoyable weeks at the lake that we have had in a long time and we've been doing this for many years. The cabin was clean and the windows and deck provided a wonderful view of the lake which is very important to us. We had everything we could need with the very minor exception of some ice cube trays. The grass and area around the cabin was neatly maintained and the fire pit a relaxing evening experience, especially so with the pleasant couple next door in the Timberdoodle. Turtle Lake is beautiful and I am still surprised at how quiet it was. Owners were extremely accommodating with near immediate response to the questions I had.

If I could improve on one thing it would be the dock. I brought my expensive fiberglass fishing boat and had to be extremely careful pulling alongside and tying up to it. I was relieved that we did not have any storms as it is exposed to the SW and trailering it would be a chore.

We came to fish for smallmouth bass exclusively and my grandson and I had a blast catching them on light tackle. The MN DNR's special regulation to protect the smallies on Turtle is a real bonus.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable week and I'm already anticipating our next stay.

Owner's Response: Cal - We're so glad that you had such an enjoyable week and that you and your grandson had a blast catching fish! Well built log cabin

  • 3 of 5

The cabin is cery well built, but could use some TLC and a few simple upgrades to make it more livable and functional. The storm door latch does not work, the shower faucet could be improved, and a water filter for the water supply would certainly improve the property. The electrical wiring and outlets are questionable and the smoke detector was disabled. This 2 bedroom cabin was quite cramped with too much furniture and too many nick knacks on shelves . The large shelving in the bathroom was very nice to have, as well as the shelf over the sink and toilet. All the appliances worked well, but there was a plastic dominoe in the toaster and the microwave location on a lower shelf was very inconvenient. (I moved it to the top shelf of the cart.) The biggest improvement needed is probably the large rut on the side of the very steep driveway where dirt has washed away, leaving a rut that is large enough to fit a tire.

We did enjoy our stay and made new friends with the people renting the other cabin. We visited the "Lost Forty" and fished two different lakes and enjoyed the Loons and the Mamma Merganzer Duck with 12 babies ! The cabin was clean and the bedding was very nice.

Owner's Response: Hello Carol, We're so glad you enjoyed your stay on Turtle Lake. We appreciate your suggestions. We hadn't realized that due to a heavy rain there was a wash out along side our driveway. We've hired someone to fill the rut so thanks for letting us know about it. Please come back and stay with us again some time! Pam & Charlie

Your Grampa's Updated Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I stayed in the Painted Turtle cabin for three nights. This is exactly what I was looking for, a connection to the past in a great fishing location. The cabin is in essence largely unchanged at least in ambiance from the 50's. Obviously there are upgrades including dish tv and a newer kitchen but the interior was full log and board construction and the way cabin carpentry was done back then contributed to the experience. We were very successful fishing for bass but lacking in walleye experience, I gave up without much effort. The owners were very responsive and I couldn't have asked for anything more. I'm a happy guy.

Turtle Lake Vintage Log Cabins

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the Turtle Lake Vintage Log Cabins! We rented both cabins to accommodate our extended family. This gave us plenty of room and the needed quiet spots for the grandkids naps. The playhouse on site was a real hit with the kids - my husband is now building a similar one at our cabin! The bass fishing was very good and the lake was beautiful. The cabins were just as they are pictured - just lovely and all the comforts of home. We would definitely stay here again!

Timberdoodle

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I decided to take our honeymoon in Northern Minnesota. We were excited when we discovered VRBO and realized we wouldn't have to settle with a resort. The cabin was beautiful. It's everything we were looking for inside and out. We found out we over packed soon after we arrived. Everything you need is there. There are plenty of places to hike and remote roads to explore the scenery in your car nearby. Don't bother running from the deer flies....it doesn't work. We didn't catch any fish, so I decided to rid the shoreline of clams. If you like clams, this lake is the spot. The crystal clear water makes hunting and swimming easy and enjoyable. I'm glad we decided to stay at this amazing property, but also kind of wish we didn't. Now we want to live there. Thank you Pam and Charlie. We appreciate you opening your house to us. I made sure to leave it in better condition than when we got there.
