Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday home in South Thomaston - Maranatha Cottage

House, 4 BR, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 22-23, up to 23) spectacular views and sunrises

Pleasant Beach, South Thomaston 4 BR newer oceanfront home. Enjoy spectacular sunrises, lobsterboats, and views of offshore islands from a 13' x 34' deck and 3 second floor balconies with chairs, deck has a picnic table, gas grill and chairs to watch boats going in and out of harbor and maybe you'll see a lobsterman pulling up his lobster traps. It is considered by many to be one of the prettiest locations in the whole mid coast area with a beach, harbor, and wharf, and 20-30 offshore islands and great fishing from the rocks at low tide, the house is up on a hill with spectacular views. Walk

for miles by ocean and explore tidal pools with starfish, crabs, shells and sea glass. Sea birds are plentiful. At low tide you can even walk out to Cushing Island. In the evening, there is a place for campfire by the seawall near the beach, also in the woods across Maple ave there are logs sawed into 1 foot lengths for campfires or may be split for use in the woodstove. There is a boat landing, so bring your kayak, canoe, or boat to explore many offshore islands. There are herds of seals sunning themselves on the rock ledges to see if you have a boat to go out to the islands and rock ledges. At certain times of the year there is great fishing off rocks in front of house to the right of the wharf by the channel at low tide. Some people catch 20-50 lb stripped bass almost every year on the first cast at low tide from the rocks in front of us to the right of the wharf, and then throws it back because he feels sorry for the fish, please check the state fish regulations as to size and number which may change each year. The stripped bass are fierce fighters so you will need 60 lb test line and an adaquate fishing pole, this is one of the best success stories of conservation, Also you can catch many mackerel from the floating docks on Spruce Head Island after 5pm or Sunday, some people I have met catch enough to feed their family all winter, they are high in Omega 3 and great for your heart. The harbor in front of the cottage is on the Wessawweskeag River which means 'the river of many points' in the native American language. Where the river meets the ocean is a bay with many islands of the Mussel Ridge chain in front of our beach. On a hot, sunny day when the rocks warm up and the tide covers them on the north side of the beach there is a small area where the water warms up to 75-80 degrees. Guests with a motorboat can take people waterskiing and swimming at Lake Chickawaukee outside of Rockland. There is an aluminum canoe, limit of 880 pounds, a sunrise colored Old Town Dirigo Tandem Plus 2 person sea kayak, with comfortable foam seats and a watertight compartment and a Perception Prodigy II 14.5 2 1/2 person sea kayak with a child seat in the middle and a watertight compartment that is bright orange, yellow, and red, all for guest use at your own risk. Please lock them up after using.

Also please check out some of the local stores like the Keag store and the Thomaston grocery with great Maine ice cream brands and local produce in season. In front of the store are history blocks of the town since 1605.

Once French territory, Thomaston - on US Route 1, was once one of the most prosperous towns in the US around 1880.

Check out the Maine Prison store in Thomaston, with great high quality wood furniture ... like the golden oak finish ash rocker in the first floor great room.

First floor includes a large deck with double french doors leading into a great room with dining area, living area, full kitchen, full bath, one spacious bedroom (1 King bed) and plenty of windows for great ocean views. It has polished yellow pine floors and knotty pine walls that smell very nice. There is also a self cleaning oven, cable TV and high speed wireless service.

Second floor has 3 spacious bedrooms (#1 - 1 king, #2 - 1 queen, #3 - 3 twins and 3 extra twin mattresses for wherever you may need), full bath, washer and dryer. Each room has its own balcony with sliding glass doors for plenty of sunlight and amazing views and its own closet. Also there are 4 super comfortable inflatable queen size mattresses with bulit in electric air pumps that are 18 1/2 inches high and have built in pillows if extra guests come to visit.

There is two zone baseboard heat, but for added ambiance you can stoke up the Vermont cast iron wood stove in the great room on the main floor.

Take advantage of the lobster! Watch the lobstermen from the deck or from the kitchen table. You can even buy some from local lobstermen and prepare it yourself - the best way to cook lobsters is in ocean water! (40% of the lobsters in the state are caught in this Knox county.)

Bring your binoculars. Some guests see a pair of bald eagles fishing from the house at low tide on the rocks in front of the house in early Spring to feed their baby eaglets. Apparently the pair of bald eagles are nesting nearby. They have also been sighted through the summer - just over the tree line from Pleasant Beach Road by Waterman Beach Road flying over the Pleasant Beach woods. Also there are sometimes moose in the area and on Spaulding island (22 1/2 acres) across the harbor from us. Also you can walk out to Cushing Island near us at low tide.

Local lighthouses (Owl's Head, Rockland Breakwater and Marshall's Point), Camden Hills State Park, Camden Snow Bowl, Farnsworth Art Museum and the Audubon Project Puffin Institute (on Main St in Rockland) are some favorite day trip destinations. Nearby towns like Camden and Rockland are fun to explore and do some souvenir shopping. Camden Harbor is a classic tourist trap with visitors from all over the world, a beautiful harbor, shops and a great variety of restaurants. Acadia National Park is only a few hours away with: spectacular scenery, views from the top of Cadillac Mountain, carriage trails, Jordan Pond, Thunder Hole, beaver dams, and lots more.

Also a very close popular spot is the birdwatching sanctuary on Buttermilk Lane between the village of South Thomaston and US Rt 1 at the source of the St George River and the Wessawweskeag River with 1600 acres with Wading Birds: Great Egrets, Blue Herons, and Glossy Ibis, Marsh Birds: American Bitterns and Soras, Shore Birds: Least Sandpipers and Short billed Dowitchers, Song Birds: Chestnut sided Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and Sharp tailed Sparrow and Waterfowl: Mallards, Wood Ducks, American Greenwinged Teals, Ringnecked Ducks, and Hooded Mergansars.

Campobello Island is an International Park just over the Canadian border (now you need a passport to cross the border). It is where President Franklin Roosevelt grew up going for the summer each year.

Farnsworth Art Museum has a free day on Wednesdays from 6-8pm which may change each year or season, it has also old paintings from the early 1800's.

The Puffin Institute offers free movies and lectures about reestablishing puffin colonies or rookeries on the offshore islands with nesting pairs from Newfoundland,

There are bird watching cruises that go out of Port Clyde, New Harbor or Boothbay Harbor. Puffin sightings are almost guaranteed. Also there is a short cruise out of Bar Harbor where the diver goes down in an insulated suit and takes pictures of his dive and all of the sea creatures on the ocean floor that guests can watch live on the boat on a 42 in plasma TV screen.

On the property, around the house, there are many plantings of perennial flowers and bushes that draw hummingbirds and other wildlife. They include: heather, 3 varieties of lavender - including the variety from which perfume is made, manardis(hummingbirds love this and are often there), osobe, butterfly bushes with 4 colors of blossoms, foxglove, lilac, Arizona Red Shades Blanket Flower(Gailardia), Hummingbird Summersweet(Clethra ainifolia Hummingbird), Pink Mist Pincushion Flower(Scabiosa columbaria), PowWow White Coneflower(Echinacea purpurea) and Mountain Bluet(Centaurea montana). Hanging baskets contain a combination of annuals, Calibrachoa, Trailing Petunias, and Verbena. Annuals like salvias, begonias, and petunias are found in flower boxes by the houses on the property.

Also, there are many great restaurants locally, Primo, Amalfi Coast, and a place almost from a different era, Conte's on 148 South Main St in Rockland, you must get there by 4:30 to 4:45Pm before it opens at 5PM to get a table, then magazine, then current issues, then August 2013, then go to the article 'Chefs Today Are Nothing But a Bunch of Punks', it is very much like when his grandfather came from Naples, Italy in 1894 and started a restaurant in Mt Kisco, NY, which his brothers still own and run,

Another priceless one of a kind experience is a visit to the Seabreeze Farm, on 414, with super friendly ADGA Saanen Goats that are very affectioate and some ancestors of the goats, you can pet the goats, even the males are so friendly, there are Rouen Ducks, Rare Breed Royal Palm Turkeys, sheep, Toulouse Geese, and a male burro named Chester who chases away any coyotes.

Why william jasko chose MidCoast - Penobscot Bay

We fell in love with the location while on vacation in 1980 and purchased the property with a rustic cabin. In 1999 we finished construction of the new home which is there now.

What makes this house unique

We love getting up early to see the sunrise, walking on the beach and exploring the tidal pools.

Renters Beware !

  • 1 of 5

If you are looking for a place that is filthy, with old flea-infested furniture, a mal-functioning septic system and have an off-road vehicle, this is the place for you. As aptly put it by a local person: "The only good thing about that place is the view."

Lower your expectations

  • 1 of 5

I though long and hard about whether I wanted to leave this review. I only did it so others would know what to expect. Perhaps it was circumstantial or personal issues with the owner at the time. I will say, do not pay him directly. Only pay thru the VRBO application. You are not protected if you don't. He is old school and wants you to send a check, bypassing VRBO. As four christian women dealing with a man who was a missionary and a pastor, we trusted him and did just that. As a result, we had no recourse after our experience.

We had been looking forward to this vacation for months. There were 4 of us, all women in out 50's. I was assured by the owner that the house was clean and ready to go. When I asked how I would get in the house, he stated he was in the house behind us and he would be there. We arrived around 8pm, after dark. We quickly discovered we had differing ideas of what clean was. The 4 of us spent the next 2 hours cleaning the house enough to get by. There were no cleaning products, so we did the best we could. Cleaning included washing the dirty sheets on the beds, cleaning the showers that had hair and used soap in them, doing the toilets, sinks and much more. The bathrooms had urinals in them that were covered with dirty black plastic so they couldn't be used, nasty. There was an odor of urine throughout the house, especially upstairs. The counter tops had to be washed 4x before the paper towels were no longer black/gray from wiping. We mopped, vacuumed, and scrubbed. His excuse, he usually only pays to have someone clean in the summer, not acceptable. He assured us the house was clean. We went to the dollar store the next day to buy cleaning products and things we would need for the week.

It gets better. The TV wouldn't work, the double glass doors that opened onto the deck could not be locked - it was broken. He did not return all week with the offer to fix it. That is a huge security issue!!! We had to tie the doors shut to secure them. The couches are so broken down that he has put boards under the cushions for support. We ended up putting sheets over the couches before sitting on them because they were so dirty. I photographed everything, just because I was dumbfounded by it all and it was everything. We were up until 1am looking for other places to stay, but it was labor day weekend. If we walked away, we would be out all of the money - so we made due. The only saving grace is the view.

Cottage on the bay

  • 4 of 5

We got to the house after dark and found the House. Basic house covering all your needs. When we woke the next morning and saw the view for the first time we where amazed. The owner was very attentive and we plan on a return visit. Did not kayak but would be a great place to go. Also the transportation Museum in Owls Head is worth a visit. The house is in quite area but close enough to main roads.

Great experience!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a wonderful place for a family vacation. Lots of room to spread out so we weren't tripping over one another, a well equipped kitchen, and a great wood burning stove kept everybody happy. The view and the sunrises are superb and we all enjoyed watching the lobster boat "traffic" and the mighty tides coming and going. Walking the stony beach at low tide looking for sea glass was fun and we found some nice little pieces. Another big plus -- the cottage is conveniently located and an easy drive to many interesting places in mid-coast Maine.

Family Reunion for Mom's 80th birthday

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful relaxing time celebrating Mom's birthday with the whole famiy! The cottage was perfect and very easily accommodated the whole family. The owner was very helpful and attentive as we prepared for out reunion and helpful after we arrived. Some enjoyed kayaking some exploring the tidal pools and some just relaxed inside doing puzzles and playing games. Something for everyone! Only wish that we had more time to enjoy this beautiful and perfectly situated cottage. The time went by much too quickly. Look forward to returning sometime soon!
