About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom, 2 full Baths, (Sleeps 2 +pull out sofa)

We bought this beautiful apartment after spending four years renting in the area. My husband grew up nearby, and we are convinced that Villefranche is a unique paradise on the French Riviera because of its small-town, friendly ambiance so close to the wonderful city of Nice.

Our location is ideal, offering spectacular views and unusual quiet in a sought after, old-town location. The Institut de Francais is within walking distance, as is the beach, all shops and restaurants, and very easy access to car, bus and train (just one block from the Place de la Paix,)

The apartment has been perfectly renovated to take advantage of its charming duplex layout, and offers a bedroom, dining area and living room with comfortable sofa, two full baths, full kitchen and a washer/dryer. There is a large flat-screen TV with free access to French channels, iPod and CD player, and telephone with free calls throughout Europe and the US.

About Melinda Reach

Jean-Paul and Melinda Lecomte

We live in Maine during the summers and beautiful Villefranche in winter.

Melinda Reach purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Melinda Reach chose Nice Area

Jean-Paul grew up in nearby Antibes. We found Villefranche when Melinda attended the Institut Francias and fell in love with the small village and its proximity to Nice

What makes this apartment unique

Villefranche is a 'little paradise.' We have the beach, great restaurants, and the most beautiful view on the Cote d'Azur. Our town still offers a small village ambiance just minutes away from bustling Nice, Antibes, Cannes and Monaco.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful home you enjoy here! Felicitations! The location is superb, the interiors are so pretty, fresh and clean and all is in order. I am sitting at your kitchen bar with a cool drink, watching the boats, listening to French music.

Thank you Melinda! I will take care of your lovely home.

Fabulous property, fantastic location.

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a gem. The property is very well maintained. Monique who manages the property made time to show us the area on our first evening, suggesting restaurants (there are many!), where to go and what to see and do. An amazing location with reliable transport links. You can either stay and enjoy Villefranche or explore places nearby. There are lots of steps, but the view you get is worth it and you can also justify eating croissants each morning guilt free! We will happily return and actually found it hard to leave. You will have a very happy and comfortable holiday if you stay here.

Wonderful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved staying at this lovely apartment on the southern coast of France. The apartment was beautiful, and the view from the window was heavenly. We sat by it morning, afternoon, and night, when we weren't swimming at the beach, eating at one of the wonderful restaurants, or going for a walk in town or to a neighboring town. The manager, Monique, made our stay even more enjoyable, and helped us with a number of logistical details. It is true that there are many stairs in town leading to the apartment, and to the apartment itself, so this is indeed not a place for someone with more limited mobility. But we loved getting a lot of good exercise, and would come back in a heartbeat!

Modern apartment with old world charm for that special vacation

  • 5 of 5

Melinda and Jean-Paul have chosen to make their beautiful apartment available in the lovely coastal village of Villefranche-sur-Mer and we couldn't be happier. Excellent, modern amenities and old-world charm combine to provide for the perfect rental in one of the most desirable locations in France. The pictures and description really don't do the apartment justice! The view from the apartment of the harbor and Cap Ferrat are spectacular.

I will agree that Villefranche is not an ideal location for those individuals with mobility issues; there are many steep streets and stairs, and the entrance to the apartment is up another set of steep stairs. But after 2 weeks I really have to say that both me and my wife feel great from all the exercise. There is no need for a car in this area due to the wonderful system of public transportation (buses and trains) that is easily accessible from the apartment. I strongly recommend heading to Nice early in your stay and purchase either a 10-ride or weekly bus pass (the unlimited weekly pass costs only 15€ and is a steal!!). We ranged from Menton to Antibe using the buses and trains exclusively.

The restaurants in Villefranche are excellent, and while we loved l'Oursin Bleu on the waterfront for a very special dinner, our favorite "go-to" choice was La Tavola on Rue de Poilu for delicious and reasonably priced meals. Wonderful bakeries, a butcher shop and a small grocery are all close by if you want to prepare your own meals in the modern and fully equipped kitchen (loved the dishwasher!). And if you love the beach, Villefranche has a lovely one that is only a 5 minute walk from the apartment.

I can truly say that this was our best vacation ever thanks to Melinda and Jean-Paul. Their manager Monique was very attentive always available for advice. I really can't imagine a better location for that very special vacation!!

Beautiful apartment in great location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay here very much. Most everything we liked about the apartment has been mentioned in earlier reviews. I will just add

- The bed is very comfortable.

- The wifi connection was very good. We used it to stream TV from our various iPad apps, which was good, since the English stations were not that interesting.

- The apartment manager emailed us a copy of a "Welcome Booklet" in advance of our stay. This includes lots of useful info, restaurant recommendations, etc. Having this ahead of time, we knew, for instance, that we would not have to bring beach towels as there were some in the apartment.

Beautiful view, close to it all!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is clean, comfortable and has all the modern amenities one would appreciate while on vacation. There is even a clothes dryer and a large bathtub which seem to be rare in the south of France. There is a lovely view and you are very close to all the restaurants and local shops, try Le Serre for yummy pizza and salad which are reasonably priced! The train is a short walk away and can take you to Monaco in about 15 minutes or Cannes in about 40 minutes. If you need groceries, there are patisseries and small grocery stores almost next to the apartment, but if you want a large scale grocery store you can take the train to beaulieu sur mer and shop at the Super 8 as they have everything! I would highly recommend this apartment!

Pretty apartment-Not a fit for all

  • 4 of 5

Firstly, we are very well-travelled, late fifties, fit and have lived in three different countries.

This apartment is very well located in the lovely town of Villefranche.

You can walk to the wonderful restaurants, churches, beach and train station. The trains, were, however, on strike during our stay.

The flat is very bright and well-furnished with dish-washer, washer, dryer and T.V.

There are two bathrooms- a neccesity, because of the curved stairs.

It was extremely clean and well- maintained.

There are two caveats here. This apartment does not have air-conditioning, nor does it have an outside patio or balcony. As a result, it is very warm during the summer months.

Villefranche is located on a hill and contains many steps. This apartment contains stairs as well, both from the sidewalk and within the apartment itself.

It would not be appropriate for children, or people with any physical challenges.

While the owner did contact us to ask for input, she was not helpful in offering a solution to our take on both the heat and the stairs.

We ended up spending a night at a hotel with air-conditioning and a pool in order to cool off.

If this is not an issue for you, then you may like this property.

Owner's Response: We are happy that Nigel and Katherine liked our apartment, but sorry that their visit coincided with a heat wave and a train strike which they understandably found trying. Villefranche is a charming 13th C. village with many stairs leading to the sea in the pedestrian zone. Fortunately, we are located on an ideal street within the old town, just 100 yards and five steps down from the Place de la Paix which has taxi access, a bus stop and many small shops. The apartment is a duplex located on the second floor of our small building, accessible via a flight of stairs, steep by American standards (see photographs in listing.) Normally, our thick stone walls, large modern windows and excellent cross ventilation provide quiet, comfortable sleeping.
