Overview

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

If you're looking for a mountain/lake getaway, our peaceful retreat has something for everybody: outdoor adventure and fishing, quaint mountain towns to explore, and R & R in a beautiful setting. Days spent in our cozy 1910 lake cabin are guaranteed to take you back to a simpler time and rejuvenate your spirit.

Our cabin sits on the shores of spectacular Lake Logan. It is on North Carolina 215, a National Forest Service Heritage Scenic Byway which climbs alongside a beautiful stretch of the upper West Fork of the Pigeon River towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lake Logan is a crystal clear mountain gem which lies in a pristine valley. Our secluded cabin is currently the only building on our side of the lake and sits on a 40 acre tract subdivided into 4 lots and surrounded by forest service land. We share our roads and dock with three neighbors, only one of whom lives in town. We are also neighbors with the 300 acre Lake Logan Episcopal Center. Most of its campus is just up the road from us. Part of their property includes 5 cabins across the lake from us which provide reassurance that we're not totally isolated. Once an exclusive retreat for Champion Paper Company executives, Lake Logan, a 90 acre lake, is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes on the East coast and is completely surrounded by forest service land. Motorized boats are prohibited. So come soak up the serenity of God’s glorious gifts in this mountain sanctuary. Watch the sun set from the dock on Lake Logan after a day of fishing. The lake offers excellent fishing for trophy trout and bass, bluegill, crappie and perch. It is only open to guests of the conference center and us. You can relax in the swing on the covered porch, open the windows and fall asleep to the sound of the creek, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee and a good book free from distractions. Children will enjoy playing in the creek next to the cabin, swimming from the dock and paddling around in the jon boat or kayak. We've enjoyed spotting wildlife from the cabin and on the lake. We have a resident bald eagle. We've seen deer, wild turkeys, otter and beaver. The lake is home to geese, ducks, kingfishers, and heron.

Thousands of acres of Wilderness area surround the Lake. The Blue Ridge Parkway, the Sunburst swimming hole and a multitude of waterfalls and hiking trails are right next door. We're minutes from the highest points along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Extensive shopping & dining are only 15 minutes away in downtown Waynesville. The historic Biltmore House or eclectic Asheville is only 40 minutes away. Perfect for a romantic getaway, celebration of a special day, or a family vacation.

Although our cabin was built in 1910, it was completely renovated (in 2011) with all the modern conveniences, but period architecture (leaded glass windows, hard wood floors and bead board ceilings and walls) and furnishings remain. We have paid particular attention to craftsmanship and details inside and out, and worked to preserve the integrity of the period and mountain setting. The cabin has an open floor plan, large kitchen, two bedrooms and two full baths. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed, chest of drawers, and comfortable reading chair, as well as a full size closet for your belongings. The second bedroom also has a queen-size pillow top bed , dresser, and armoir. The sectional sofa in the den can be used to sleep 2 additional people. The second bathroom is off the den and has a shower and vanity with mirror.

The large living area is a combination kitchen/dining/living room and has great views of the wooded areas surrounding the home. The living room is accented with a gas log heater and comfortably furnished with a sectional sofa and television with DVD player. A windowed door opens to the front porch that overlooks the lake. From there you can view activity on the lake and the dock or grill your favorite foods.

The kitchen is fully equipped and in keeping with the period of the house. It contains an antique refrigerator/freezer and electric stove/oven. The microwave, dishwasher and coffee maker are new. There is also a breakfast bar that seats three and separates the kitchen from the den area. Dishes, silverware, pots, pans, and other cooking utensils are available for your use. The dining table, next to the kitchen, comfortably seats six and has a lake view.

Smoking is not permitted. Pets are allowed for a small additional fee.

About Dan Smith

We are a family of four. Dan is a youth minister, Leslie is a school counselor, our oldest daughter is in law school at Campbell, and our youngest daughter works at the local pharmacy. We have a dog and a cat who are also a big part of the family.

Dan Smith purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Dan Smith chose Maggie Valley/Waynesville Area

Our cabin on Lake Logan is a dream come true. We have always wanted to have lake front property, but never imagined we'd find just what we were looking for so close to home. When four lots on Lake Logan went up for sale, we jumped at the opportunity because it had everything we were looking for: seclusion, fishing and boating on a beautiful lake which doesn't allow motorized boats and rarely has anyone else on the lake, a creek and mountain views.

Excellent trout and bass fishing in the lake and easy access to delayed harvest trout waters on the West Fork of the Pigeon River. Stone spring house behind cabin sits beside the creek. It is very rustic but good for children's imaginative play. Close proximity to Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Cherokee and casino. Views of Cold Mountain from the lake. Established trail system with Pisgah Game Lands, Shining Rock Wilderness, and Nantahala National Forest for access to hiking, fishing, climbing and other outdoor recreation. 15 minutes from quaint downtown Waynesville for shopping and restaurants. Peaceful, comfortable, beautiful scenery, great hosts.

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for a fishing retreat for 3 generations to enjoy together and we found it. Since the lake and dock is across the road from the cabin, a bit of a challenge for anyone not fully able bodied due to steep descent. We will return and completely enjoyed ourselves.

Wonderful place to stay when you want some peace and quiet away from it all. Plenty of room and enough space for two couples and their dogs. Thanks Dan for your hospitality!

Relaxing getaway

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. I would not recommend for hotter months as there is no AC. There are a lot of windows with screens though and ceiling fans throughout the house. The grill is charcoal and is located down the steps just off the front porch. It's a very short walk across the road to the shared dock. The water is crystal clear and the fish are abundant. This is a jewel in the mountains of WNC.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. The cabin is air conditioned, but we remove the unit during the winter months for the improved view out of the back of the cabin. We put it back in on Memorial day weekend for the summer. We're sorry if you were too warm during your stay. The cabin usually stays cool, even in the hotter months, but we have air conditioning for the few times it is needed.
