Getting to Guatemala is easy. So is getting from the Guatemala City airport to Lake Atitlan, one of the most exquisite and beautiful spots on earth with many luxurious rental vacation homes and villas to choose from.
We recommend hiring a private shuttle from the airport to Lake Atitlan. We always use a family shuttle service with three excellent and highly reliable drivers who greet guests just outside the airport and hold up large signs with their names. The trip takes 2.5 hours and ends at Panajachel , the gateway village to Lake Atitlan . The total cost, is $100. You have two choices for lake transportation to your hotel or your vacation rental house or rental villa. You can take a public boat called a “lancha” for Q 20 (about $2.70) or you can hire a private boat “lancha privada” for about Q250 (around $31.00) Whichever you choose, know that the last public boat leaves Panajachel at 7:30 pm . Tell the boat captain where you are going as soon as you get on board. For our guests, we arrange for a private boat to bring them to Casa Colina , our vacation rental home in San Marcos La Laguna , and the private dock for guests.

David and I fell in love with Lake Atitlan years ago and in 2006 , after much searching, we found our dream place. Here , in this quiet cove beside a sacred Mayan cliff and just outside the charming village of San Marcos La Laguna, we constructed our home, Casa Colibri . Until it was completed in 2009, we lived in Casa Colina , the original large and rustic stone house higher on the hillside The two houses are quite private, separated by a long stone stairway . In 2010, , we totally renovated and furnished Casa Colina, and began offering it for rental. Lake Atitlan remains an unspoiled corner of the world. It is always a pleasure to share its stunning beauty, tranquility and magical energy with friends and visitors.
Bonnie O'Neill purchased this villa in 2006
Aldous Huxley described Lake Atitlan this way: ' I think I have just seen what may be the most beautiful lake on earth. Picture Lake Como with volcanos...it is almost too much' He was right. The natural beauty here takes your breath away. Temperatures are spring like and perfect , never too hot or too cold. The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, the indigenous people are friendly, hard working and very kind. San Marcos , the nearby village, is a charming place, no cars, shops run by local artisans, 15 restaurants with delicious food at unbelievably low prices, an array of health spas with highly skilled massage therapists and healers. Casa Colina is luxurious with all the comforts and amenities you deserve including fast speed internet and low speed hammock. But be warned. If you are like us and most of our guests, you will fall under the spell of Lake Atitlan and start dreaming about moving here.
If you rise with the sun before 6 am , you'll relish the sight of indigenous fishermen already out on the lake . Paddling handmade pagodas, they are fishing exactly the way their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. It is an irresistible photo op! You will also be serenaded by our 38 different species of birds . This number was documented several years ago by a Welsh husband and wife team of bird watchers who spent three weeks here . Like our bird friends, they appreciated the many avocado and banana tress , the herb garden, lush bougainvillea and thanks to our talented gardener , Francisco, the colorful and full variety of plants and flowers .
Mornings are especially delicious here. If you are swimmers, Casa Colina offers the best location on the Lake, very safe and private and from your own private dock. We supply e plenty of rafts, beach towels, snorkely equipment and a small row boat to use exploring the Lake. Upon confirmation , we send a 10 page booklet packed with helpful information about the house, San Marcos La Laguna and other villages and suggested activities around the Lake. Transportation around the Lake is easy, enjoyable and inexpensive. Public boats stop by our private dock every 20-30 minutes. San Marcos is only a 3 minute boat ride away.
We arrived at Casa Colina at dusk . We immediately loved the house. We had ordered dinner ahead . The table was set, candles were lit and a delicious meal was waiting for us. It was everything we imagined and much more. But it wasn't until the next morning that we understand why owners Bonnie and David say Casa Colina and Lake Atitlan are magical. The view is breathtaking. We felt we were on top of the world. We were only able to stay five days but we packed a lot into them. My husband and son hiked San Pedro Volcano. My two daughters and I shopped in San Juan La Laguna. We all swam , kayaked, took saunas, visited art galleries, went horseback riding in San Pedro , practiced our spanish, and ate at five different restaurants just in San Marcos. We loved returning to Casa Colina at the end of the day , sitting on the patio and watching the sun go down. We all agreed it was our best family vacation ever . We hope to return next summer and stay two weeks.
My daughter (10 years old) and I stayed in this stunning house for four nights after staying 10 days in Antigua. It was a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle and we enjoyed the ability to decompress in such a gorgeous environment.
The staff, San Francisco and Maria, were always willing to assist us with anything we needed but also allowed us our privacy.
The grounds are stunning!
We will be back!!!
We were very lucky to stay in this very special place on our recent trip to Lake Atitlan. It sits high above its own private dock (a perfect place for catching the local boats, swimming, canoeing, or just daydreaming) and looks over the imposing volcanoes on the opposite shore. The small cove in front of the property was ideal for our two kids - ages 8 and 10 - who spent a good deal of their time swimming and on rafts and canoes. Bonnie and David were excellent hosts, who think of EVERYTHING! Their guide to all the lake activities is particularly useful, and we felt 100% safe and secure in their villa. It's an ideal place to base yourself while exploring the charms of lake's many offerings.
I don't even know where to start from! The owners: Bonnie & David are just the nicest & friendliest people! They were so attentive to our needs, that they really went out of their way to help us out with anything we needed. My wife & I came with our 2 year old daughter, and she just loved it! She loved their cute dog, the relaxing hammock, the great view especially with the little boats passing by, she also loved the kiddy boat & smiwing in the calm water. The place itself is a bit higher up then water level, and provides INCREDIBLE views!!!
The house is very spacious with 3 beautiful rooms & 3 bathrooms which was great for us! Loved the kitchen & dining room.
We'd love to come back to Lake Atitlan, and if so we'd definitely stay again at this amazing place. We truly recommend this place for everyone! Thanks again Bonnie & David for making our trip so memorable :)
We spent two happy weeks at Casa Colina with another couple. The house is clean and comfortable for European standards; everything works, and we loved being on the patio at all different times of day and night. Getting around to various villages on the lake by boat is a novelty, a pleasure, and a great release from life in the car! The owners of the property and their staff made us feel at ease and having dinner prepared every other night by a local cook was a treat. We enjoyed also the canoe and the sauna--not to mention in lapping of the lake waves and the bird songs at sunrise and sunset. We travel regularly and use VRBO because it lets us be in contact with the owners BEFORE we pay any fees. The mutual responsibility of owners and renters is crucial to making the VRBO set-up work and we would stop using VRBO if that were not possible. The 111 steps from the dock up to the house not an issue for us, who are all over 65, but it could be for some people. Hopefully, we will be able to make another trip to Casa Colina.
We loved Casa Colina and Lake Atitlan and plan to return. The house, property, and dock provide a safe, tranquil setting for a family vacation with our daughters, ages 13, 16, and 19. Each personality in the family was satisfied. Some of us got up early, drank coffee, and watched the sun rise each morning. A couple of us caught the boat for the 5-minute trip to the village (San Marcos) for yoga. We swam and snorkeled. We took our hosts' advice and got a tour of the lake with Domingo, a local English-speaking tour guide. We picked up some paintings and tapestries from local artisans. We enjoyed a couple of dinners in the house prepared by a local young woman, and we had a number of meals out as we explored. Thank you, Bonnie and David!
Our stay at Casa Colina truly was a great memorable family vacation. The views in the photos don't come close to the views we had every morning as we had our coffee on the dock. Boat transportation to the many villages around Lake Atitlan was easy. Afternoons were spent hiking, shopping, swimming, and eating at the endless authentic restaurants. In the evening, we would watch the sun set from the huge picture windows along the lake side of the house as a fire warmed the living room. Casa Colina is perfect for families. Traveling with teenage daughters, the question of safety is always foremost on my mind. Bonnies assistance with transportation and suggestions of people and places to visit and stay were priceless and spot on. I felt my family was safer at Casa Colina than many places we have visited in the US.
We hope to return soon to Casa Colina!
