Visit the little red cabin, a cozy and eclectic writer’s home in the woods, just a 5-minute walk to the village of Phoenicia. No need for a car, the Trailways bus brings you to the village, and your feet carry you the rest of the way. This 1-bedroom cabin is perfect for a single person or couple and a well-behaved dog.
Built as a rustic hunting cabin in the 50s, it has been renovated with wood and ceramic tile, and decorated with traditional and contemporary art. Now it is one large (600 sf) space with a vaulted ceiling and skylights. On cold or rainy days, hang out in front of the woodstove set into a beautiful cobble-stone chimney, or luxuriate in the Mexican-themed bathroom, looking out into the woods as you soak in the tub. Mountain and river views are afforded from the bedroom and living room areas.
Other features include a deck with Adirondack-style chairs and table, board games, a fully-equipped kitchen in which to whip up any confection from cappuccino to cupcakes, fresh bed linens and bath towels, WiFi, unlimited phone calls, ceramic tile, and hardwood floors. There is a queen-size air mattress available for a third guest. The yard is fenced for your dog’s delight and your peace of mind.
The cabin sits across a small street from the confluence of the Stony Clove and Esopus creeks. Nearby, enjoy hiking through thousands of acres of Forever Wild mountains, tubing, biking, antiquing, exploring mountain villages, farmers markets, or yoga, to name a few attractions. Fifteen minutes to Belleayre, Hunter and Woodstock.
Please be aware that this is a cabin in the woods and can have animal visitors, such as the occasional mouse or ant.
Trailways bus from Port Authority stops in the village, which is a 5-minute walk to the house. Driving time from New York is about 2.5 hours.

I'm a writer & editor. During the 10 years I lived at the cabin, I was a reporter for the local newspaper.
The Owner purchased this house in 1983
I was lucky enough to inherit the cabin from my father.
The cabin is simple, cheerful and relaxing. Walk to the village in 5 minutes or hang out on a boulder to watch the mighty Esopus creek rush by.
Dear Rachel, Thanks for opening your eclectic, colorful, cozy cabin so people can enjoy what it has to offer. We have some great memories. The river was so relaxing. Fires at night in your cozy cabin were too perfect. We were amazed by the great hiking nearby, especially the rock formations & waterfalls on the Tanbark Trail behind the post office. We also had a great time shoveling pig poop & helping out at the Woodstock Animal Farm Sanctuary! What a great place to volunteer at. Thanks again!
My boyfriend, our dogs and myself had a great time at the Little Red Cabin. It is the perfect size for a couple and we enjoyed our nights playing scrabble (provided w the cabin) by the fireplace. There isn't a TV but with Internet access, you don't miss it and was nice to get away from. The cabin has a unique charm and we felt right at home.
The location is great and even with Rt 28 being so close, I couldn't hear the cars/trucks. We've visited Phoenicia before by way of camping but now I think we'll be renting a cabin every year instead. The town is small but has everything you will need if you don't have a car. Woodstock is only a 20 min drive and is fun to walk around as well and there are more restaurants there. Hiking in the Catskills is amazing!
Can't wait to go to Phoenicia next year!
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Little Red Cabin, everything was exactly as described on the website. Cabin was cozy, rustic and charming. Rachel was a pleasure to deal with.
Walking distance into town and hiking, just off 28 and surprisingly barely there traffic noise.
Very much enjoyed our stay and would love to return at a future date.
My partner and I enjoyed our stay at the Little Red Cabin. The cabin was very comfortable, and we spent our nights making dinner and enjoying the warmth of the wood stove. The cabin was located just off of 28, so it was very easy to get to hikes and neighboring towns.
My wife and I (and our little Feist) have just returned from a very enjoyable long weekend at the Little Red Cabin - and would certainly recommend it.
Top marks to Rachel for her real hospitality, great follow-up very helpful advice on what to do in the area. It really is sooo very nice to be able to take an easy stroll from the cabin into the village for eats or general meandering - - and future visitors to Phoenicia will be pleased to know that Sweet Sue's has now reopened!
The Little Red Cabin has all of the attractions and appeal mentioned on the website and it's ideal for those seeking to get away from it all. We plan to be back.
From the minute we arrived, we were instantly at home. This cabin has such a great welcoming vibe! It is decorated with interesting art, books and natural details. It is peacefully situated up a small road, just minute from town by foot. We walked into town everyday for a great breakfast at either Mama's Boy restaurant or Sweet Sue's. Both great! Rachel is a pleasure to deal with - she made the whole thing so effortless. There was lots to do around or in Phoenicia. And when we stayed in, we were very comfortable. The fenced in yard was PERFECT for our two senior dogs. This is a great cabin and made for a great week's stay. My thanks to Rachel for opening it up to us. I would like to go back!
There is both too much and very little I can say about Rachel and her Little Red Cabin. The word "perfect" sounds hollow, but it is also dead-on, particularly in its ability to contain everyone's definition.
From my original inquiries all the way through my return to the city, Rachel was present and extremely attentive to all of my questions and needs, whether about the cabin, Phoenicia and the surrounding area, or my swimming hole options. The cabin itself is beautiful and simple and real, the type of space that will adapt to whatever you need from your time there: to sit and listen to the water and wind, to rest, to work. Phoenicia and the area only add to that feeling of possibility without pressure. There are some great food and people a few minutes away, and not too much further away, you can find even more. The same is true for hiking, walking, biking, art, fishing--that list could go on far too long. The ways each season would shift these options--too good.
Much, much gratitude to Rachel for creating and cultivating a place that allows for so many experiences while retaining and being shaped by the core of a solid, comfortable, real living space known as the Little Red Cabin. I hope to be there again as soon and often as I can.
Phoenicia is home to white water tubing on the Esopus river.
