Why Linda Hoagland chose Louisiana

The Louisiana bayous include some of the most gorgeous scenery that this country offers. The wildlife is especially interesting, with some spectacular bird watching opportunities. All along the bayou, Spanish moss drapes old cypress trees, bald eagles drift overhead, and herons stalk their prey on the swampy shores next to you. Sit on the top deck of the houseboat and watch the swamp drift by. Throw in a fishing line and catch dinner! At night relax with a drink at the wet bar and hot tub on the upper deck, and when you tire of stargazing, retreat to the living room with its TV and choices of DVDs, books and board games. A full kitchen invites you to try your hand at Cajun cooking, or if you want to have a real down-home meal, try the delicious home-cooked food at some area restaurants. Internet is wireless and free.

What makes this house boat unique

Weekends are especially fun here! 4 miles down the road from the Summertime, Gros Marina has free live music on weekends, and it is fun watching the locals dancing to Cajun and Zydeco bands. When your feet get tired, you can sit in the patio or retreat to the houseboat to rest up. There are plenty of swamp tours in the area to check out, several museums in Morgan City, lots of casinos and wonderful places for antiquing. Morgan City is located a 90 minute drive to the nightlife of New Orleans and 90 minutes to Lafayette with its Cajun ties. This area of Louisiana boasts of frequent festivals celebrating all that life has to offer.

This houseboat is our family's favorite vacation

  • 5 of 5

After staying on the houseboat 2015 and 2016 Labor Day it is now our family's annual event. Getting to the boat is journey of its own driving beside the river was a plus. We found the location easily with the directions provided by Linda along with a phone number if needed. Our family was greeted with a smile by the house manager which made us feel welcome. All of our questions about our stay and the surrounding area were answered along with phone number by house manager. This year was a 2 week stay and both ladies texted in middle of week checking if there was anything we needed. All arrangements to stock and change linens was at my convenience.

The cabin area was comfortable for my 5 grandkids and 5 adults to enjoy breakfast and lunch together. The bedrooms are small but the beds offered everyone a goodnight sleep. The kitchen and bathrooms are stocked with extras.

The top deck is very spacious and has covered seating making sitting enjoyable any time of day. We enjoyed grilling out and the hot tub on top deck in the evenings.

A real treat for our family was the alligator that lives across the river nicknamed ,Garland, by neighboring boat owners. Garland, swam across every morning and evening and hung out a safe distance from lower deck. I must admit we enjoyed his visits and it was a bonus to watch him eat bread.

At least once a week a grandchild will" ask when are we going back to the little boat [pontoon] with the big boat [houseboat]". Questions like that are priceless. I am a happy grandma when the grandkids set off on adventures with their papa and return with memories that will last a life time.

While vacationing this time we did enjoy eating at Rita Mae's it's very home style and we will go back again. Another place I recommend is Suzie's not only is the food good but the owner is very friendly and made as feel welcome.

As I said we will be back 2017 and looking forward to making family memories for all.

Thank you Linda for being so kind and sharing your lovely houseboat with my family.

Lila

Beautiful bayou experience!

  • 4 of 5

My family stayed on Linda's houseboat the week of May 29. I planned this vacation over a year ago and was anticipating a great adventure! Unfortunately, the pontoon boat was not operational and the canoe had been smashed a few weeks prior, greatly reducing the activities I had planned. This was very disappointing, but we were determined to make the best of things. There were kayaks too, but after seeing the very large gator swim behind the houseboat one morning, I was pretty sure our little girl would not go for that!! (honestly, me neither!!)

The bayou is beautiful and filled with diverse wildlife. Crawfish, snakes, turtles, birds, fish & gators galore!! It rained heavy the last day & night we were there and unbeknown-est to us, that was prime crawfish time! Locals were outside with nets and buckets scooping up tons of crawfish that were flooding the streets and ditches, free food for the taking!! All the people we encountered in Morgan City were very friendly! Rouse's market has everything, rivaled the best markets Springfield, Mo has. We tried Susie's Seafood, got the seafood platter and a dozen crabs. The people at Susie's were very nice and showed us the proper way to eat the crabs, but we were not a fan of how they were prepared. It seems that crawfish and crabs are either cooked in a flavored broth (lemons, onions, seasonings) or as with Susie's, cooked or steamed in water, then a salty seasoning liberally sprinkled over. This is the easiest way, but not the most flavorful. The seafood platter was a little lack luster, nothing special. Rita Mae's got great reviews, but were closed the three times we went there for dinner, so maybe next time...Contrary to popular belief, the mosquitoes were not that bad, only got bit maybe once. Maybe we were just lucky.

Linda and her staff were friendly and available to help with anything. The houseboat is well stocked with everything from pantry items, toiletries, to movies, books and games. The bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed being gently rocked to sleep every night. Internet was pretty spotty, but while on vacation who needs to spend a lot of time doing that? I'd recommend this houseboat to anyone. All in all this was a wonderful experience and has made my family want to move to the bayou, at least part time!!!

Thanks Linda!

Owner's Response: Paula, I was so sorry that we couldn't get the pontoon working while you were there. Things move veryyyy slowly in bayou country, and although the mechanic promised he would be there Tuesday morning, obviously he didn't make it! All our phone messages and texts were to no avail. If you do ever make it back to bayou country, you get free pontooning! Thanks for your understanding. Hope you went out to the bayou with some of the swamp tours and airboat rides offered in the area. Cheers, Linda Hoagland

spring break getaway

  • 5 of 5

Wanted a place that my two teen-aged boys could fish and enjoy the outdoors, and this fit the bill. They enjoyed the kayaks, and caught catfish and bream from them as well as from the houseboat. Relaxed in the hot tub in the evenings, and just enjoyed the view. Saw so many gators and bald eagles on our pontoon boat excursions. Boys were ready to pack up and move to the bayou!

Unfortunately our time on Summertime was plagued with some terribly bad weather with high winds and torrential rain for 3 days. Watching the storm from the top deck of the boat was an amazing experience. We laughed a lot...the kind of giddy laugh when actually you wonder if you will die by the lightning strikes.

Despite the high winds, the houseboat was very stable and moved very little. The inside was very comfortable for the 4 of us. While it might sleep 10 people, it would be pretty crowded.

We can only imagine what our experience might have been like had we had good weather. We would have especially enjoyed exploring in the pontoon boat and kayaking in the basin.

Great house boat on the swamp!

  • 5 of 5

Linda and husband were there to greet us and were helpful and nice! House boat was spacious...even for 4 couples. Enjoyed the hot tub at night. Loved taking out the pontoon. Our best memory of the trip was catching a huge spoonbill catfish off the back on the house boat! Would love to stay again! ;)
