Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cabin in La Veta

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Welcome to our log cabin in the picturesque Cucharas River Valley, surrounded by San Isabel National Forest, conveniently off Hiway 12, Scenic Hiway of Legends.

Enjoy the charming towns of Cucharas & La Veta just down the road, play a few rounds at the Grandote Golf Course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, hike numerous mountain trails, fish Bear & Blue Lakes, or put your feet up on the deck and watch the sunset over the valley.

From our snug cabin, recently updated, you will hear the Cucharas River rushing just below the property. We provide a plush full bed with adjoining full bath in bedroom 1, a plush queen bed in bedroom 2, and a plush queen bed and set of bunk beds in the 3rd bedroom, just across from the 2nd full bath. A fully stocked, spacious kitchen, large table for meals & games, beautiful stone fireplace and comfy furniture awaits. A full size washer & dryer are conveniently located between bedrooms.

A flat screen TV with DVD only (no TV service) and video library are provided, as well as puzzles, books and games. Free WiFi is available in Cuchara.

A favorite activity is a 45 minute hike up to the spectacular geological dike formations just behind the cabin, where you'll overlook a secluded valley...take a picnic lunch and a book for a perfect afternoon.

Or take a 10 minute walk into Cuchara, where you'll step back in time. Enjoy live music at the Dog Bar or have an elegant dinner at the Timbers restaurant, play a round of putt putt golf or browse the shops for treasures.

Just across Hiway 12 you'll find trout fishing at Bear and Blue Lakes or just meander the lovely hike between the lakes. Drive up to Cucharas Pass, where the adventurous can hike West Spanish Peak.

A lovely day trip is 2+ hours to Taos for shopping, lunch, more shopping, and back to the cabin by dark. Or experience a ride on the old time Cumbres/Toltec narrow gauge railroad, also on the road to Taos.

Back at the cabin, relax and enjoy the hummingbirds off the deck, the sound of the river, and possibly a bear siting. There will be more to do tomorrow!

Why Janet Balser chose Southeast Colorado

Our family fell in love with this wonderful valley in the 1950's and we are thrilled to now have this mountain getaway. Being from Texas, there's nothing like the cool mountains in the summer. Every visit we discover another treasure in the quaint towns of Cuchara and La Veta, not to mention the woods, streams and lakes. We hope you will too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Janet,

We just returned home from our wonderful week in Cuchara. What a fabulous time we had! My husband and I, along with my daughter and our two grandsons absolutely loved your cabin. It was perfect for the five of us and met all of our needs. We really appreciated how clean and well-equipped it was. We truly felt at home there all week. As we were leaving at 6:30 this morning, our 8 year old grandson (seconded by his 11 year old brother) said: “We need to write the owners a thank you note to let them know how much we loved it here.” Since we were getting into the car at that time, I promised them that I was already planning to e-mail you and I would say “Thank you” for them as well as the three adults.

We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds every day as well as seeing deer roaming the neighborhood each morning. I think all of us were a little disappointed that we never saw a bear – although none of us wanted to meet one up close and personal. It was heavenly to go to sleep each night with the soothing sounds of the river running below the cabin. Since we had two major thunderstorms – Friday and Saturday afternoons – the water was really rushing. In spite of the heavy downpours, we felt safe & secure inside the cabin. We enjoyed watching the clouds, rain, and even the lightning in the mountains from the great windows in the living room.

The location of your cabin was perfect for us – quiet and somewhat isolated, yet very easy to get to and from where we wanted to go. We enjoyed many hikes, fishing, events at the Community Center, horseback riding and barbeque at Yellow Pine Ranch, a day trip to the Sand Dunes, and many visits with all our friends who were in the Cuchara area at the same time we were.

Thank you so much for providing such a super home for our week in Cuchara. We’re already trying to determine when we might be able to visit again, and we all agreed we would definitely want to rent your cabin again.

Sincerely,

Delia

Very Nice!

  • 5 of 5

I was impressed with this cabin. It is accessible but secluded. The rear deck nestles up to the trees and is wonderful. The cabin was very clean and nicely furnished. The owner was friendly to deal with. Truly a great family getaway. Thank you.

Best Cabin ever!

  • 5 of 5

Our rental cabin was beautiful with all the amenities we needed. The wrap around deck was excellent for our little grandkids to play on without having to worry about them. We've rented alot of cabins and this was by far the best. We will definately be coming back in the future.

Beautiful and cozt

  • 5 of 5

Cuchara Cabin was exactly as advertised. The cabin was very clean and cozy and was a perfect setting for our group. The kitchen was well stocked and the beds were comfy. Of course the area surrounding the cabin is stunning and cool. Warning - there is no internet or cell service so if you are traveling with others, plan ahead.

Love, love, love

  • 5 of 5

You know you have had a successful getaway when you are departing and already planning the next time you get to come! This cabin was perfect for us (5 adults). It is comfortable and private. The deck was perfect for morning coffee and reading in the afternoon sun. The kitchen was well stocked and we enjoyed family meals and games around the dinner table. We did not have Internet and we realized that when we booked the property. The tv was not turned on once! We were relaxed and enjoyed our time together. I have to compliment the owners on the cabin's cleanliness....it was spotless! All in all, I would recommend booking this property. I hope we can go back!

Nice cabin

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this cabin. As VRBO owners ourselves we're keenly aware of how other properties look and feel. This cabin has great beds & linens. The hall bath is a nice size, but the master is much smaller. We enjoyed the hummingbirds outside the window and took time to refill their food and take some slo-mo movies -- a real treat. The deck furniture needs to be replaced and we didn't feel it pulled us to sit outside, so we had all our meals at the dining table, in fact we were a little afraid of breaking the outside furniture if we sat in the wood chairs. The magnavox record player is unique, but not really for use -- takes up some valuable space in the living room that could otherwise be better used. The TV set is very small, -- not really easy to watch it from across the room, but it is new and DVD's can be played on them -- bring some of your own for variety. The couch was very comfortable and worthy of a few good naps. We didn't get to try the fireplace. Some kitchen supplies are very old, but it is well appointed. We loved the quiet neighborhood and our walks throughout. Just a note: if you have AT&T don't expect any service in or outside of the cabin, but if you're on Verizon you can get it in spots in the living room. As advertised: this home does not offer internet at all -- so go downtown to catch any phone calls or emails. There's also no line phone in the home. Coffee maker worked great, so did the dishwasher and stove. It's a great price for the offerings.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words on our beds, linens, sofa, appliances and general ambiance. We do strive to make it an exceptionally clean, cozy, comfortable mountain experience. On our next trip there in a few weeks, we plan to add new deck furnishings, upgrade the TV and add DVDs....appreciate your input there. Verizon does seem to have the best service in the area, though we do have luck with AT&T, though more sporadically....often on the deck or in the driveway. We view it as a way to get away from it all for just a while!
