Cabin Nestled in Pines-Valley View, Mtn Trails, Cucharas River

Bedrooms 3
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Welcome to our log cabin in the picturesque Cucharas River Valley, surrounded by San Isabel National Forest, conveniently off Hiway 12, Scenic Hiway of Legends.

Enjoy the charming towns of Cucharas & La Veta just down the road, play a few rounds at the Grandote Golf Course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, hike numerous mountain trails, fish Bear & Blue Lakes, or put your feet up on the deck and watch the sunset over the valley.

From our snug cabin, recently updated, you will hear the Cucharas River rushing just below the property. We provide a plush full bed with adjoining full bath in bedroom 1, a plush queen bed in bedroom 2, and a plush queen bed and set of bunk beds in the 3rd bedroom, just across from the 2nd full bath. A fully stocked, spacious kitchen, large table for meals & games, beautiful stone fireplace and comfy furniture awaits. A full size washer & dryer are conveniently located between bedrooms.

A flat screen TV with DVD only (no TV service) and video library are provided, as well as puzzles, books and games. Free WiFi is available in Cuchara.

A favorite activity is a 45 minute hike up to the spectacular geological dike formations just behind the cabin, where you'll overlook a secluded valley...take a picnic lunch and a book for a perfect afternoon.

Or take a 10 minute walk into Cuchara, where you'll step back in time. Enjoy live music at the Dog Bar or have an elegant dinner at the Timbers restaurant, play a round of putt putt golf or browse the shops for treasures.

Just across Hiway 12 you'll find trout fishing at Bear and Blue Lakes or just meander the lovely hike between the lakes. Drive up to Cucharas Pass, where the adventurous can hike West Spanish Peak.

A lovely day trip is 2+ hours to Taos for shopping, lunch, more shopping, and back to the cabin by dark. Or experience a ride on the old time Cumbres/Toltec narrow gauge railroad, also on the road to Taos.

Back at the cabin, relax and enjoy the hummingbirds off the deck, the sound of the river, and possibly a bear siting. There will be more to do tomorrow!

Why Janet Balser chose Cuchara

Our family fell in love with this wonderful valley in the 1950's and we are thrilled to now have this mountain getaway. Being from Texas, there's nothing like the cool mountains in the summer. Every visit we discover another treasure in the quaint towns of Cuchara and La Veta, not to mention the woods, streams and lakes. We hope you will too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Janet,

We just returned home from our wonderful week in Cuchara. What a fabulous time we had! My husband and I, along with my daughter and our two grandsons absolutely loved your cabin. It was perfect for the five of us and met all of our needs. We really appreciated how clean and well-equipped it was. We truly felt at home there all week. As we were leaving at 6:30 this morning, our 8 year old grandson (seconded by his 11 year old brother) said: “We need to write the owners a thank you note to let them know how much we loved it here.” Since we were getting into the car at that time, I promised them that I was already planning to e-mail you and I would say “Thank you” for them as well as the three adults.

We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds every day as well as seeing deer roaming the neighborhood each morning. I think all of us were a little disappointed that we never saw a bear – although none of us wanted to meet one up close and personal. It was heavenly to go to sleep each night with the soothing sounds of the river running below the cabin. Since we had two major thunderstorms – Friday and Saturday afternoons – the water was really rushing. In spite of the heavy downpours, we felt safe & secure inside the cabin. We enjoyed watching the clouds, rain, and even the lightning in the mountains from the great windows in the living room.

The location of your cabin was perfect for us – quiet and somewhat isolated, yet very easy to get to and from where we wanted to go. We enjoyed many hikes, fishing, events at the Community Center, horseback riding and barbeque at Yellow Pine Ranch, a day trip to the Sand Dunes, and many visits with all our friends who were in the Cuchara area at the same time we were.

Thank you so much for providing such a super home for our week in Cuchara. We’re already trying to determine when we might be able to visit again, and we all agreed we would definitely want to rent your cabin again.

Clean and cozy cabin. We cooked a few meals in the stocked kitchen. I loved that it had 2 full bathrooms. There were 4 adults and it was perfect. A 3rd bedroom had room to sleep 4 more with a set of bunk beds and a double bed. The owner is very nice and easy to work with. The cabin is located in a beautiful area. We would definitely stay again, and highly recommend this cabin!

Comfortably and Cozy with Fantastic Views

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing stay at this cabin in Cuchara. The cabin itself was immaculate, spacious but cozy, and it had everything we could need (and many things we didn't even think of).

The weather during our visit ranged from sunny in the upper 70s to snow and in the low 30s, giving us the opportunity to not only play games and read by the fire but bask in the sun on the gorgeous deck. One of my favorite things to do every morning was to take my oatmeal out on the deck and eat it while listening to the nearby stream and the wind in the trees.

The kitchen is well equipped and allowed us to cook a number of meals with ease. The bedrooms are well-sized and offered plenty of room for us and all of our gear. There is also a virtual library of maps and guides in the cabin that allowed us to plan our hikes and drives in the area. We never ran out of things to do, and even the kids never once said they were bored!

Visiting Cuchara and staying at this cabin was, hands down, one of the best vacations we've ever had. Thanks!

Over all the cabin was fine and we had a great FAMILY TIME.

Cabin is alittle outdated. Needs to be updated for the Price $$$$.

Beds comfortable, bathrooms nice but orange chairs in the living area needs to be replaced, lite over kitchen table not bright enough for doing puzzle or playing games, fire place did not draft like it should of - might need to be check and cleaned? Need to replace you can opener and the oven has seen it's better days.
