Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 1 bath pet friendly with wooded lot, minutes to downtown Ithaca

This vacation property has a very large patio overlooking the lake with a fireplace and a hot tub which provide a wonderful night-time place to relax. This cottage was a speakeasy in the 1920s, so it has plenty of charm, but it was fully renovated in 2009. One bedroom has a queen sized bed, the second bedroom has a full-size bed. The maximum occupancy is 4. Front-loading washing machine and dishwasher included. Not suitable for children under 4 years old. You cannot access the lake from the property, but can just a 2 minute drive down the hill towards Ithaca.

About Elena Collinsworth

I moved to Ithaca to attend veterinary school where I met my husband at a mutual friends 4th of July party. He was a lecturer for ROTC at Cornell, and we both since have been relocated to Virginia. We really loved Ithaca, and hope to return someday. Many hours were spent in the yellow cottage with friends and family, and my best friend was my roommate. The cottage was restored with love and care, and I put in many hours of work on the house myself.

Elena Collinsworth purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Elena Collinsworth chose Cayuga Lake

I fell in love with the property and the character of the cottage immediately. Many people had passed it over because it needed TLC. I think you will also fall in love with the uniqueness and surroundings of this little cottage. I added a hot tub in 2011, and many hours were passed under the stars talking with friends and enjoying the twinkling lights on the other side of the lake through the trees.

Charming, clean, and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage that is well-appointed, private, and clean. It had everything we needed and was only minutes from downtown Ithaca. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Great winter get a way

  • 5 of 5

Watched the sun set over Cayuga Lake from the enclosed porch. In the morning drank coffee while enjoying tranquility of the woods.

Cute Lake Side Home

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We loved taking in the sights in and around Ithaca including hiking to waterfalls and brewery/winery tours. The home itself was very clean and well taken care of. We were surprised by the size of the kitchen which was larger than expected for such a small house. The bathroom again, was very clean. My husband liked that the shower head was high, because he is tall. The hot tub was great after a long day of skiing! Overall, we highly recommend the little yellow house. The only things I would possibly change would be for the fireplace to be usable and maybe add a couple of wall mirrors in the bedrooms. With just one bathroom, it would be nice to have an extra mirror to fix your hair while the bathroom is in use.

Cold, dirty and stingy

  • 1 of 5

We asked for an early check-in on Saturday, Christmas Eve and arrived at the home around 12:00 noon. When we entered the cottage it was 44 degrees. We attempted to increase the temp. on the thermostats but nothing turned the furnace on. My husband went to the basement to see what was wrong. I immediately called the owner who answered and said she would get a HVAC person out ASAP. It was Christmas eve, I did not expect her to be able to get someone on such short notice. But a repairman did arrive about 1 1/2 hours later. He initially indicated he would not be able to do anything because he didn't work on oil furnaces. However, he determined that both thermostats needed the batteries replaced. He did not have any with him. After leaving and returning with new batteries. the furnace kicked on and within the next 2 hours the house heated to 60 degrees. We had sat around for the first four hours of our visit in sub 60 degree temps. My husband was not happy and we were very concerned as to what our options would be if the house did not heat up. The owner did not offer us anything other than she would get someone out to look at the furnace.

We went ahead and brought our luggage and belongings in. We went into Ithaca and ate at Joe's restaurant-which was a great choice! When we got home the house was toasty. However, when we woke up the next morning- Christmas day the house was back at 56 degrees. The furnace had turned itself off during the night and we again had NO heat. Apparently there is a reset button and once my husband tripped that the furnace turned back on. Within the next 2 hours we had warmth again. We spent the day driving around the lake and seeing a couple of the area waterfalls. When we returned to the house the furnace was again OFF and house was cold. One more trip to the basement and reset and furnace turned back on. I then texted the homeowner to let her know of this recurring issue. She offered us nothing other than- she's never had this problem before. We were leaving on Monday- but not before we again woke up to a house that was registering 55 degrees. I sent a text to the owner/we reset the button.

As to cleanliness- most areas in plain sight were ok however, under the bed, the fridge/freezer and the shower curtain all were unacceptable. Finally-- for the 2 of us she provided two bath towels, two wash cloths and ONE handtowel. She said in a text that's all she provides! That to me is stingy!!!

Owner's Response: Apologies you were upset. The heat was fixed quickly as soon as you alerted me to the issue. The heater has always kept the house toasty, and it is working well now. I even had a full tune-up just to make sure, and the heater passed with flying colors. We will check the batteries in the thermostats more frequently now. My friends who take care of the cottage have always had rave-reviews for keeping things clean, and are very thorough.

Cozy and Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the little yellow cottage. It was cozy and the perfect location for our Cornell parent's weekend visit. The house is updated and the surrounding landscape is absolutely beautiful in the Fall. Thank you for some wonderful family time.

Lovely, cozy cottage near Ithaca

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our weekend stay at the Yellow Cottage.

Loved: Location is perfect, a few minutes from Ithaca. Quiet street. Size is just right for 2 couples. Hot tub was nice.

Liked: Good kitchen, grill, beds.

We found the woods nearby to be a bit tick-heavy, and would advise those who wander there to do a good check. Would stay again.

Location

Nearest Airport
4 Miles
Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport

The cottage is located in a spot that I think is great for access to everything the Fingerlakes have to offer. It is only a couple of minutes away from the mall and the grocery store along with plenty of restaurants on Triphammer road. It also abuts the most historic neighborhood of Cayuga Heights where there are stately mansions nestle along the road with cliff views of all of Ithaca. Yet the cottage is fairly secluded, and surrounded by forests on a very quiet street. If you go up East Shore drive you will get to the vineyards along the East side of the lake and the cute little town of Aurora where the McKenzie-Childs farm is located (this is a very nice drive and visit to the founding location of this high-end whimsical furniture and home décor company). If you drive in the other direction there is an area for swimming at the Cornell sailing school that is only a couple of minutes down the road toward Ithaca. You can rent kayaks at Puddledockers, which is about ten minutes from the cottage near Meadow street. The commons is the boutique shopping pedestrian mall of Ithaca with plenty of great restaurants, and it is in the center of downtown, and also only ten minutes from the cottage. A thirty minute drive will take you to the many wineries on the West side of the lake and the quaint village of Trumansburg with plenty of antique shopping along the way. Robert H. Treman State Park is a great place to hike the gorges, and it is about fifteen minutes away from the cottage off of Meadow st. Ithaca Brewery is near to Treman Park, and it offers many nationally known micro-brews along with great locally-sourced food. The iconic Ithaca Falls are about a 5 minute drive away from the cottage (just drive down East Shore drive and head straight past Ithaca High School and the falls are on the left). Stewart Park is about five minutes away, which is the home to many festivals in Ithaca (Including Beerfest and the Scottish festival) and Stewart Park also has outdoor BBQ with a beautiful view of the lake.
