Beautiful Cabin, Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful few days here … gorgeous home, warm and welcoming. Met up with the housekeeper at the local store about a five minutes drive. She was sweet and willing to baby sit our dog while we were gone one day white water rafting. Great country for that kind thing. Went down the street to the local marina and bought a fishing license and fished most of the weekend. Cooked trout on the outdoor gas grill every night too. My grand-kids were with us and every evening we enjoyed the outdoor fire pit yard. There was also a jungle gym that the kids played on while we told stories around the campfire. The fire pit is large and perfect for families to gather around and tell tails. Our family loves the outdoors, hiking and fishing so this property was perfect. You have about 40 acres to roam, fish and hike, we even found a cave down by the river to explore. We saw no one, no snakes and were surprised that we didn’t even see poison ivy. This place looks out over a large river. You can hear the water running from the deck. Its about a 7 minute walk down to the water. The walk down to the river is easy, down your drive way and theres pretty much the river on the right. We let our young children and dogs go down to the river daily with out us. We could see them fishing from the deck and could keep an eye on them. All roads are paved, but hardly no traffic. You can also drive down to the river, the drive takes just a minute and is the great if you are caring a heavy cooler full of food and beverage. We caught more trout than we could possibility eat. So if fishing is your intention you have found the right place. Whole group was very concerned with internet. We are all working and needed to stay in touch during our stay. Wifi at this place worked great. I believe the service is with hughes. Were all able to check and answer emails in a timely fashion. We received a very detailed welcome package that was very helpful. The directions to the property were spot on. We usually use navigation now a days but found their directions easy to follow. Restaurants mentioned were excellent. We tried the gamekeeper, twiggs and one place right down the road called the Captains table. Its on the water with beautiful lake views. The home itself is all log (no dry wall). The furniture inside is very nice, the bedding is wonderful, got the best nights rest we’ve had in a while. This is a great cabin for large families to share with 3 stories, lots of room. A+ rating on this home.

Beautiful, away from it all vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The area here is beautiful. My husband and I love the mountains and this offered the most peaceful, beautiful trip we had been on. No way to give less than 5 stars even with the few inconveniences of being out in the middle of nowhere. Amazing place! The sky is full of stars and the river on the property is crystal clear. The house is absolutely beautiful, clean and offered amazing views. Our 2 teenage boys and our lab were with us. They Loved it! We explored the river, fished and even explored the cave on the property. There is a climb up to the cave and a good 15 ft steep drop to get down in it. Take a light with you. We saw wildlife and even a bear while hiking in the woods on the property. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the top of the mountain. It is a steep climb. The path is wide and open. We enjoyed roasting marshmallows at the fire pit. The ladybugs do come out in the afternoon when the sun comes out. We couldn't sit on the decks during that time because of the swarms but it didn't bother us because they were only in the back of the cabin so we congregated elsewhere. To get to the river there, you have to walk down the driveway, turn to the right, the river lines a gravel road. The area you are allowed on is very nice and there is plenty of river to enjoy. You can drive down to the river and park at the entrance beside the gravel road. You can see the river from the cabin. It is very close and hearing the river run was so relaxing. You can't walk straight down to the river because the house is situated on the side of a mountain. My son and I hillbilly rafted the river which was fun. This would not be possible with low river levels because of the many boulders in the water. We drove an hour to Erwin to see a movie. We went out on Watuga lake which lines the roads leading up to the property for miles. It is a beautiful, clear, deep clean lake. Lakeshore restaurant is a must. It's the only restaurant we visited while in the area. Just remember, if the map says something is 22 miles- that means it's going to take you almost double that in minutes to actually get there because the roads are winding mountainous roads. My two teenage boys didn't have 1 complaint. You will never forget this place.

Owner's Response: So good to hear that your stay was a Success and thank you very much for the 5 star review it is much appreciated. Love to hear that you and your family enjoyed not only the home but the scenery too. Yes, guest have an easy walk or drive down to the river with over 2000 feet of river frontage and fishing paradise. This river year round is up to your waistline in most spots and even as high as your shoulders in its deepest spots and on the edge next to the shoreline its shallow area great for youngsters looking to 'wade' into the water. Great hike too to the top of the hill so be sure to bring your hiking boots. Wow, how lucky you are to get a glimpse of a bear. Over the past ten years we have never seen one. Bears are very recluse a rarity. Glad you were able to get out and visit the quaint town of Erwin. Its a beautiful place that also offers white water rafting trips. It is just short of an hours drive. Know too there are movies in Elizabethan and Boone. Both only a 30 minute drive from this cabin. Boone and Blowing Rock are side by side, vacation destinations that are popular with the guests. Both towns offer great restaurants, live music, shopping mall, Tanger outlet mall, TJ Max and Wal-mart. Perfect for any guest who might tire of the peaceful wood in search of some action. All roads are paved to your back door. The two lane hwy leading to town has a 45 mph speed limit and is very scenic. There are also scenic over looks along the way to take advantage of. Please come back and stay with us again. Would love to have you as guests anytime. alakecabin4u

Great family getaway with a fabulous view

  • 4 of 5

Elk River lodge was a beautiful house, well stocked with everything you need. Plenty of kitchen supplies, lacked for nothing. The beds were also great, seemed new, memory foam and we slept great. The fire pit was a great hit and the steam room was a pleasant surprise. We hiked down to the river and spent the afternoon exploring. We also took the 40 minute drive to Laurel Falls and hiked to the beautiful falls, even though it was drizzzling. Great way to spend Labor Day. Be aware that this is definitely a remote location and activities are all about 40 - 60 minutes away. Bring what you need because local stores don't have much. Internet worked great and the satellite tv was good entertainment in the evening. We also enjoyed the pool table and the kids broke out the Risk game. Absolutely fabulous view. It's the reason to stay there and we couldn't get enough!

Remote and relaxing as advertised

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful and the beds were comfortable. Within 45 minutes of Virginia and North Carolina. We were able to do something different each day- visited quaint towns, toured caverns, hiked, rafted and fun-yakked down the Watauga River, spent a day on the lake and took morning walks along the scenic creek. We visited Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, and Bristol Caverns. Be sure to stop at Big Dans Bar-b-que in Elizabethton for delicious food. Thanks for a great vacation!
