a lovely cabin

  • 4 of 5

This cabin was a great place for a recent family gathering. It is spacious, well equipped, comfortable. There are nice gathering spaces inside and on the front and back porches. The two car parking policy takes some getting used to and might be a bit restrictive for some.

Amazing cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I (a group of 10) stayed recently for a weekend and we were sad we didn't take more time off from work and book this cabin for longer! It was the perfect getaway: quiet, quaint, and surrounded by nature. We loved the fireplace and the kitchen was perfect for cooking! Anyone looking for that winter cabin getaway, this is definitely the place you want to stay at.

Also, Todd was the best host! Very responsive any time I had to message him for anything. And, honestly, he just seems like a really good person and was lovely to interact with. Next year my friends and I definitely want to come back, stay longer, and make a tradition of this!

Perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

The property itself was very clean and spacious, but what I was most impressed by was how the owner (Todd) made himself readily available to answer any and all of the questions we had during our stay. It was just a few minute walk from the house to the private lake entrance, and the surrounding area was gorgeous (I'd never been to Saugatuck before but after this trip I'm already planning a vacation there for next year!) Overall, I would definitely recommend the Sugar Shack to anyone looking for a relaxing Saugatuck getaway. :)

Very nice cabin, could use some attention

  • 3 of 5

Let me just start with saying I and the group of people I stayed with at the Sugar Shack had a 5 star time while there. Todd was excellent to work with and we felt very comfortable. That being said, I think there is some more information that should be shared about this cabin, and maybe a few more pictures illustrating the setting. Also, there are some cleaning issues that should be tackled before they become a true burden or turn off to renters.

The cabin is in a community of other cabins-it is essentially a subdivision w/ no privacy between you and your neighbors. If you are sitting on the back porch or in the hot tub, it is not private-neighbors can absolutely see you.

We had no idea where the lake was. There is no information in the cabin on where things are. There was a sign at the end of the road, but we saw no path or anything else. It looked as if you just walked through someones yard? We're still not sure what the lake looks like.

The cabin does stock some things but a few essentials were missing. No garbage bags or recycling bags, the dishwasher soap was one big block, no hair dryer. Also-1 towel/person and no hooks in the bedrooms, so if there's a towel mix up you may be out of luck. If there was a broom or mop, I didn't see it.

There is no sound privacy in the cabin. Every noise made downstairs can be heard upstairs as if you're standing in the same room. If your group has different schedules at all, you may want to reconsider.!

The fireplace is too small for the large logs provided, becomes too smokey. We bought duraflames to enjoy a fire.

Cleaning issues: We opened the oven to cook and the bottom is a black mass of charred food bits. Pretty stinky, pretty much a fire hazard. Dishes in drawers/cabinets not cleaned-probably because policy is that renters clean and put away before leaving-looked like people were just putting them away w/out washing. The basement hadn't really been cleaned before we got there, there were red solo cups on the windows and crumbs all over the table. Lots of cobwebs in the cabin, lots of things under furniture. We moved a chair to watch tv and found potato chips, chapstick, and a whole lot of dust/crumbs. Also, all patio furniture was in a giant pile on the back porch obstructing any nice view. That was a bummer.

None of these things impeded our good time, mostly they were a curiosity in a nice cabin. It was comfortable, close to town, good size, great bathrooms, great Wi-Fi, great hot tub.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback, this is highly unusual for our excellent clean team and they immediately returned to address issues and re-stock items (garage bags, detergents etc. I ensure all guests have 24 clean towels and washcloths (hooks are behind each bedroom door), coffee filters, toilet tissue, Kleenex, soaps/shampoo/conditioner, extra propane and more. Missing hairdryer its replaced. Joey the local lumberjack brings wood and sometimes size varies. Wish you would've contacted me during your stay as I would have sent immediate help to remedy any issues.
