|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
1800's renovated Farmhouse with Stunning Views overlooking Lake Algonquin and Adirondack Mountains.
This is a great area to find some peace and quiet, and the perfect home for those who are particular. Great for adventurers and couch potatoes alike! Year round rugged Adirondack enjoyment can be found outside, while luxury, beautiful lake and mountain views with modern comforts can be found inside.
SPRING, SUMMER and FALL
During the warmer seasons our favorite activities include the 3 mile walk around the lake, hikes to nearby waterfalls, swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking out front. The large front lawn is a great spot to relax in the adirondack chairs while drinking in the view, barbecuing up dinner or lounging around the campfire. Public fishing dock out front. Swimming is easy access, but It is a bit rocky, bring water shoes, or public sand beach is one mile away. 2 kayaks, one stand up paddle board and lake floats provided.
Open floor plan has an amazing "chefs" kitchen, sitting area with fireplace, dining and a second living area with 40" flat screen for watching Netflix movies. We have no cable here, we come here to get away from the news.
Upstairs has a Master bedroom with cathedral ceilings, queen bed, private bath and great lake views. Two guest bedrooms have one double bed each and use of 1/2 bath upstairs, another full bath downstairs.
The house is kept in as close to perfect condition as we can manage. We remove shoes prior to going inside - and prefer our guests do as well. However, we know this is asking a lot, so please be mindful of bringing dirt, snow and mud onto our antique wood floors.
Kitchen - our favorite room! Beautiful lake views, fireplace and dining table, so the cook can converse with everyone. Double farmhouse sink, 5 burner gas stove, dishwasher, expansive wood counter space. Very nice pots, pans, dishes, glassware, spices and other amenities provided.
We do go out of our way to supply amenities that will make our guests stay a little easier and nicer, such as binoculars, table cloths, iron and board, kayaks, paddle board, snowshoes, bikes, paper towels, tin foil, plastic wrap, napkins, sugar, spices, condiments - lots of little things you would find at home but may not think of bringing while traveling. We also share detailed directions on how to get to some amazing local spots, waterfalls and places that you might not find otherwise - some took us years to find!
Linens supplied, but we do ask you to bring your own bath and beach towels. If travelling by plane, let us know and we can get you some towels.
In order to keep this 200 year old Farmhouse in it's current immaculate condition, and it's plumbing in working condition, we cannot have more than 4 persons here in summer, 6 persons other times of year. We do not rent for parties or family reunions, sorry! This is a great house for couples or small family getaways, but not appropriate if you are planning to entertain.
The yard out front is where we spend our time, overlooking the lake and mountains beyond. There is a local road between us and the lake, but we are above it and it is somewhat obscured. We have four Adirondack chairs for lounging and enjoying the view. Large picnic table, fire pit and large Weber grill.
This is lake country so drives to the different lakes can be fun. Great antiquing and white water rafting up this way.
FALL FOLIAGE is AMAZING from the farmhouse! We have unobstructed views of color filled mountains, doubled by the reflection of these mountains on the lake, really is a sight to see!
Winter is magical here! Cozy and warm inside, great sporting opportunities right out your front door. Snowshoe or cross country ski across the lake or on one of the many trails through the snow covered woods. Lapland Lake is a world class cross country resort with reindeer and authentic Finnish food. Downhill ski at family friendly Oak Mt. just a 15 minute drive, or much larger Gore which is 35 minutes away. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, and of course winter hiking to our local waterfalls are other favorite activities.
Speculator (next town over) rents snowmobiles, you can sled from here to Canada on wide expanse of groomed trails - this is amazing snowmobile country. Guided tours available for those trying it for the first time. Give it a shot - experiencing the Adirondack woods in winter, gliding over lakes, stopping in at different Pubs for a pint and a stew can be great fun. Highly recommended.
MORE ABOUT THE FARMHOUSE
This is one of the oldest homes in town - was a working farm for 100+ years. Fully renovated 2010. Sits on elevated 3/4 acre overlooking Lake Algonquin. Truly gorgeous view.
Porch - there is a large porch on the backside of house. Can read out there or store your skiis and toys. There is a sitting area to remove and store shoes so if you would like to be shoe free in house, as we are, it is convenient.
What might you NOT love? RECYCLES - are a real hassle here. Guests must agree to take them home if you brought a lot. Leaving a few is fine, but you must agree to follow the towns strict recycle rules - they must be kept clean and separate from garbage. We (i.e. the housekeeper) then have to take them to the dump and separate them into bins by hand. We simply cannot handle this task if large amounts are left. So - our general rule here is, if you bring a lot in, you must agree to take them out! Leaving small amounts (less than one bag full) are fine, and will be hauled to dump by our fabulous housekeeper.
No smoking, no pets (no exceptions, sorry!) and no candles please, this is an allergy sensitive home.
Watercraft is available for use May-Oct. Holidays rates may be higher with longer minimum stays, please inquire.
Maura is a lifelong Adirondacker, her family has been vacationing in Wells for 4 generations. David and Maura spend lots of time here in all seasons, and have fallen in love with renovating houses here. We now have 4 lakeside renovated homes, plus the original family camp, all available for weekly rental.
Maura purchased this farmhouse in 2009
Stunning Views, Luxury Inside, Rugged Adirondacks Outside
We love the fact that this house used to be the scariest one in town....but we always thought it must have the best view...and we were right! Since we gut renovated in 2010, it now has all the comforts of a modern luxury year round home combined with reclaimed wood floors with antique furnishings and features...and was redesigned to best capture those views! Amenities include kayaks, bikes, stand up paddle board, snowshoes, Weber Grill, Firepit, picnic table. Fishing pier across the street. Wireless Internet, 40' flat screen, iPod Player, Chefs Kitchen with killer views while cooking! Great master queen bedroom with views as well.
Thanks so much for sharing your lovely Farmhouse. We cooked up a storm in the great kitchen next to the fire. Some much desired snowfall came along so we snowshoed up Mt. Sawyer to some awesome views. Thanks for providing them!
We would love to come back to see the area in different seasons.
The Farmhouse is a magical place. My sisters and I have stayed here twice now and hope to come back again. Everything at the house is perfect. We especially enjoy the sitting area off the kitchen with the comfy sofa and ottoman where we can sit and enjoy the warm fire and beautiful mountain and lake view. The house has every amenity. We just love it there. You will, too!
This house was absolutely lovely. So we'll maintained and cared for. There were 6 women on our trip and it was exactly what we were looking for. Cozy, quaint, quiet, and clean!! The lake was beautiful and entrance for kayaks was just across the street. I will definitely stay here again
Maura's property is amazing- from the location and condition of the farmhouse to the little details- like downward and up warding sliding blinds on all the windows and little soaps in the showers.
The property looks out on a gorgeous view of the lake- there is a road in between the house and lake, but it's not loud. Do be aware that getting a watercraft (like the provided kayaks or paddle board!) is a little tricky- doable but tricky.
The kitchen is amazingly appointed, the wifi speed is good for streaming, and the beds comfortable. Maura provides a binder with fun things to do- definitely get out on the water. Thanks Maura, for a great trip!
Our friends from Oklahoma City came with us - it was their first trip into the Adirondacks. The house is beautifully situated on quiet and lovely Lake Algonquin. Truly the view is perfect! We are partial to older homes and this one is well-appointed and obviously loved by the owners. We found it very "user-friendly." It was awesome having the kayaks there as opposed to having to rent boats. We did a lot of hiking and sight seeing in the area, but we found directions to various places were better secured from the "natives" rather than using the house notes. The "things to do" notebook was very helpful, however. We heartily recommend The Farmhouse for a stay in the southern Adirondacks!
We loved our time at the lakeside farmhouse. We are in love with the house - so many beautiful details, and so thoughtfully designed! We also appreciated all of the thoughtful details for quests - info on things to do, binoculars, kayaks, books, dvds, wifi, BBQ grill, etc. While we were there a storm came through and while the rest of the town lost electricity, the farmhouse's generator kicked in so we consistently had electricity. Both Maura and the house manager checked in with us when this happened which we appreciated.
We spent our time there hiking, biking, kayaking, BBQing and relaxing by looking onto the lake- all of which we loved! One thing to note -the house is close to a small dam so it won't ever be completely quiet since the waterfall from the dam is there. That said, we only heard it when sitting outside and not when in the house. Thanks for a great, relaxing stay!
We had such an amazing time at this beautiful farmhouse. The house itself is just as gorgeous as you'd hope it would be from all the photos - the upstairs bedrooms are beautiful and there are shelves and shelves of books and board games for everyone to enjoy. We spent loads of time in the kayaks included with the property - you just carry them across the road and go into the water! We also built a few fires in the fire pit to roast marshmallows and hot dogs, and used the grill to make some amazing steaks and eat at the picnic table. The house has everything you need to live comfortably, eat outside, enjoy the scenery and just relax. Maura is also totally lovely and was really helpful. I would come back here in a heartbeat!
Wells is a sleepy, scenic town in the southern Adirondacks. Very quiet here - there are days you might be the only one on the lake, even mid summer. No tourists, just summer camps and one motel in town.
Spring through fall there are free tennis and basketball courts, a children's park, local beach and an ice cream shop.
LOTS of healthy outdoor year round activities here!
Spring and Summer for swimming, kayaking, hiking, lots of remote waterfalls to explore and lakes to visit.
Fall is stunningly beautiful foliage, especially from this house! Unobstructed views of the lake and mountains beyond.
